    A psychometric study of a Spanish version of the negative acts questionnaire-revised: confirmatory factor analysis.

    Background: The NAQ (Negative Acts Questionnaire) has been widely used in more than 40 countries to measure the mobbing phenomenon. This research aims to present a psychometric study based on the Spanish version of the NAQ-R carried out by González-Trijueque and Graña (2013). As opposed to the original scale, this sample contains 23 items and a three-dimension model (personal bullying, work-related bullying, and physically intimidating forms of bullying). Methods: We used a heterogeneous occupational sample of 2,538 Spanish employees to analyze internal consistency and concurrent validity. In addition, a Confirmatory Factor Analysis was carried out based on the GLS (generalized least squares) method. Results: Results showed high internal reliability (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.91) and high correlations containing clinical symptoms, burn-out indicators, and coping resources. The Confirmatory Factor Analysis developed upon the heterogeneous occupational sample validates the three-dimension structure in the Spanish version of the NAQ-R aimed to measure harassment behaviors at the workplace. Conclusion: The NAQ-R reaffirms its validity and reliability as a measure for mobbing-related behaviors. Hence, the scale may become a useful tool in research and forensic practice.post-print779 K

    Identification of a tachykinin-related peptide with orexigenic properties in the German cockroach

    A number of evidences suggest that tachykinin-related peptides (TRPs) of insects can stimulate food consumption after being released from the midgut to the hemolymph. The idea of the present work has been to test this hypothesis in the anautogenous cockroach Blattella germanica. First, we have identified the peptide LemTRP-1 (APSGFLGVR-NH2) from brain extracts, by means of an ELISA developed with a polyclonal antibody against this peptide. ELISA studies have also shown that, whereas brain LemTRP-1 levels were fairly constant, midgut levels increase to a maximum on day 3 after adult emergence, falling thereafter until the end of the gonadotrophic cycle. Interestingly, maximum values of food consumption are concomitant with the decrease of LemTRP-1 immunoreactivity in the midgut. Furthermore, starvation decreases LemTRP-1 immunoreactivity in midgut, whereas in the hemolymph it increases. Finally, injection of synthetic LemTRP-1 to adult females significantly stimulates food consumption. The whole observations suggest that LemTRP-1 is released from the midgut to the hemolymph when sustained food consumption is required to maintain vitellogenesis at the highest levels, and that LemTRP-1 in the hemolymph stimulates food consumption in these days. © 2007 Elsevier Inc.     Structural Stability of the PsbQ Protein of Higher Plant Photosystem II

    We have characterized the stability and folding behavior of the isolated extrinsic PsbQ protein of photosystem II (PSII) from a higher plant, Spinacia oleracea, using intrinsic protein fluorescence emission and near- and far-UV circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy in combination with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Experimental results reveal that both chemical denaturation using guanidine hydrochloride (GdnHCl) and thermal unfolding of PsbQ proceed as a two-state reversible process. The denaturation free-energy changes (GD) at 20 C extrapolated from GdnHCl (4.0 ± 0.6 kcal mol-1) or thermal unfolding (4.4 ± 0.8 kcal mol-1) are very close. Moreover, the far-UV CD spectra of the denatured PsbQ registered at 90 C in the absence and presence of 6.0 M GdnHCl superimpose, leading us to conclude that both denatured states of PsbQ are structurally and energetically similar. The thermal unfolding of PsbQ has been also characterized by CD and DSC over a wide pH range. The stability of PsbQ is at its maximum at pH comprised between 5 and 8, being wider than the optimal pH for oxygen evolution in the lumen of thylakoid membranes. In addition, no significant structural changes were detected in PsbQ between 50 and 55 C in the pH range of 3-8, suggesting that PsbQ behaves as a soluble and stable particle in the lumen when it detaches from PSII under physiological stress conditions such as high temperature (45-50 C) or low pH (<5.0).     Caracterización petrográfica y petrofísica de la roca encajante de la Cueva del Rull (Vall d'Ebo, Alicante)

    La Cueva del Rull se encuentra en el sector nororiental de la Cordillera Bética, en el denominado Prebético Externo de Alicante (Azema 1977). Regionalmente, la zona de estudio está dominada por la dinámica compresiva de los materiales calizos existentes (Cretácico Superior) afectados, desde el Mioceno Medio y durante el Mioceno Superior, por diversos movimientos tectónicos a partir de los cuales se origina la Depresión de la Vall d'Ebo. Esta fosa tectónica, cuyos bordes norte y sur quedan delimitados por fallas normales con dirección aproximada E-O, está rellena por materiales rudíticos de edad Mioceno Superior, predominantemente conglomeráticos, de espesor variable (decenas a más de 100 metros), localmente plegados y depositados sobre margas de facies “tap” (margas mal estratificadas de carácter arcillo-limoso, desagregadas y de color blanquecino en superficie, cuya edad se atribuye al Mioceno Medio).Este trabajo ha sido financiado por el proyecto CGL2011-25162 del Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad.     Characterization of the gas-liquid interfacial waves in vertical upward co-current annular flows

    [EN] For more than fifty years, hundreds of research works have focused on the study of annular flow because of its huge importance in many industrial processes, for instance, chemical, petroleum, etc., being of particular interest in nuclear industry. Specifically, interfacial waves play a vital role in the mass, momentum and energy transference processes between gas and liquid phases. This paper describes the new experimental measurements of vertical upward co-current two-phase gas-liquid flow carried out in a tube with an inner diameter of 44 mm. The liquid film thickness and the major characteristics of the interfacial waves have been measured using a non-intrusive instrument, a conductance probe. The physical phenomenon in which this device is based is the change in the electrical conductivity between air and water, i.e., the electrical signal collected in the sensor receiver depends on the thickness of the liquid film layer. The experimental measurements range from 2000 to 3500 l/min for the gas volumetric flow rate, and from 4 to 10 l/min for the liquid volumetric flow rate. Correlation of the experimental measurements of liquid film thickness and the major properties of the interfacial waves have been analyzed using non-dimensional numbers. An important part of the document focuses on the comparison of the experimental data and the fitting correlations against several of the most widely used expressions. Throughout this paper, in addition to present all the available correlations, the existing scattering found when comparing against other expressions have been also confirmed, underlining the existence of gaps of knowledge even today.     Clinical characteristics of COVID-19 in older adults. A retrospective study in long-term nursing homes in Catalonia

A retrospective study took place in 80 long-term nursing homes in Catalonia, Spain collecting data from March 1st to May 31st, 2020. Demographic and clinical data from 2,092 RT-PCR confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection were registered, including structural characteristics of the facilities. Descriptive statistics to describe the demographic, clinical, and molecular characteristics of our sample were prepared, both overall and by their symptomatology was performed and an analysis of statistically significant bivariate differences and constructions of a logistic regression model were carried out to assess the relationship between variables. The incidence of the infection was 28%. 71% of the residents showed symptoms. Five major symptoms included: fever, dyspnea, dry cough, asthenia and diarrhea. Fever and dyspnea were by far the most frequent (50% and 28%, respectively). The presentation was predominantly acute and symptomatology persisted from days to weeks (mean 9.1 days, SD = 10,9). 16% of residents had confirmed pneumonia and 22% required hospitalization. The accumulated mortality rate was 21.75% (86% concentrated during the first 28 days at onset). A multivariate logistic regression analysis showed a positive predictive value for mortality for some variables such as age, pneumonia, fever, dyspnea, stupor refusal to oral intake and dementia (p<0.01 for all variables). Results suggest that density in the nursing homes did not account for differences in the incidence of the infection within the facilities. This study provides insights into the natural history of the disease in older adults with high dependency living in long-term nursing homes during the first pandemic wave of March-May 2020 in the region of Catalonia, and suggests that some comorbidities and symptoms have a strong predictive value for mortality.The authors(s) received to specific funding for this work

    TRANSVERSA: coordinación de actividades transversales del módulo básico de los Grados en Biología y Ciencias del Mar

    La coordinación transversal entre asignaturas es una oportunidad para que el alumnado mejore su aprendizaje. Más allá, la coordinación de la evaluación permite evaluar los conocimientos de una manera integral. Esto, además de ser uno de los objetivos marcados en el EEES, el alumnado lo percibe siempre como positivo. En nuestro caso, el profesorado de la red, ha trabajado llevando a cabo la coordinación de las tareas docentes para la evaluación conjunta de las asignaturas que participan de la coordinación transversal. El resultado es una planificación semanal de las actividades coordinadas, que permiten al alumnado preparar una comunicación científica en forma de presentación y de póster, de manera grupal, a lo largo de un semestre y coordinado entre las asignaturas. Los resultados indican que el alumnado lo valora positivamente, y que siempre espera más y mejor de estas experiencias

    Retention efficiency for microplastic in a landscape estimated from empirically validated dynamic model predictions

    Soils are recipients of microplastic that can be subsequently transferred to the sea. Land sources dominate inputs to the ocean, but knowledge gaps about microplastic retention by land hinder assessments of input rates. Here we present the first empirical evaluation of a dynamic microplastic fate model operating at landscape level. This mechanistic model accounts for hydrology, soil and sediment erosion, particle characteristics and behavior. We predict microplastic concentrations in water and sediments of the Henares river (Spain) within the measurement uncertainty boundaries (error factors below 2 and 10, respectively). Microplastic export from land and discharge by river fluctuates in a non-linear manner with precipitation and runoff variability. This indicates the need of accurate dynamic descriptions of soil and stream hydrology even when modeling microplastic fate and transport in generic scenarios and at low spatio-temporal resolution. A time-averaged landscape retention efficiency was calculated showing 20–50% of the microplastics added to the catchment over a multiannual period were retained. While the analysis reveals persistent uncertainties and knowledge gaps on microplastic sources to the catchment, these results contribute to the quantitative understanding of the role of terrestrial environments in accumulating microplastics, delaying their transport to the sea

    La asignatura “Algoritmos y estructuras de datos III” se imparte en segundo curso de la Escuela y Facultad de Informática de la Universidad Politécnica de Valencia. La asignatura tiene una carga lectiva de seis créditos, que se dividen en cuatro de teoría y problemas y dos de prácticas en el laboratorio. Las prácticas de la asignatura son fundamentales para la consecución de los objetivos de la asignatura. En esta línea, adicionalmente a la propuesta de prácticas de la asignatura (estrechamente relacionadas con los contenidos teóricos), se ha puesto en marcha este curso académico un Concurso de algoritmos con el fin de incentivar al alumnado en la realización de las prácticas. En esta comunicación se describirá la aplicación que se planteó en el concurso, las herramientas implementadas para el seguimiento, el contraste de resultados y las medidas de tiempos puestas a disposición de los alumnos, así como los resultados conseguidos

    Bortezomib decreases Rb phosphorylation and induces caspase-dependent apoptosis in Imatinib-sensitive and -resistant Bcr-Abl1-expressing cells

    The use of c-abl-specific inhibitors such as Imatinib (IM) or Dasatinib has revolutionized the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). However, a significant percentage of patients become resistant to IM. In this report, we have analyzed the possibility of using the proteasome as a molecular target in CML. Our results show that cells that express Bcr-Abl1 are more sensitive to the inhibition of the proteasome with Bortezomib (Btz) than control cells. This treatment reduces the proliferation of Bcr-Abl1- expressing cells, by inactivating NF-jB2 and decreasing the phosphorylation of Rb, eventually leading to an increase in caspase-dependent apoptosis. Furthermore, we show that Btz also induces cell-cycle arrest and apoptosis in cells expressing Bcr-Abl1 mutants that are resistant to IM. These results unravel a new molecular target of Btz, that is the Rb pathway, and open new possibilities in the treatment of CML especially for patients that become resistant to IM because of the presence of the T315I mutation
