Estimates of Active Region Area Coverage through Simultaneous Measurements of He I 5876 and 10830 Lines
Simultaneous, high-quality measurements of the neutral helium triplet
features at 5876~\AA\ and 10830~\AA, respectively, in a sample of solar-type
stars are presented. The observations were made with ESO telescopes at the La
Silla Paranal Observatory under program ID 088.D-0028(A) and MPG Utility Run
for FEROS 088.A-9029(A). The equivalent widths of these features combined with
chromospheric models are utilized to infer the fractional area coverage, or
filling factor, of magnetic regions outside of spots. We find that the majority
of the sample is characterized by filling factors less than unity. However,
discrepancies occur among the coolest K-type and warmest and most rapidly
rotating F-type dwarf stars. We discuss these apparently anomalous results and
find that in the case of K-type stars they are an artifact of the application
of chromospheric models best suited to the Sun than to stars with significantly
lower . The case of the F-type rapid rotators can be explained
with the measurement uncertainties of the equivalent widths, but they may also
be due to a non-magnetic heating component in their atmospheres. With the
exceptions noted above, preliminary results suggest that the average heating
rates in the active regions are the same from one star to the other, differing
in the spatially integrated, observed level of activity due to the area
coverage. Hence, differences in activity in this sample are mainly due to the

Absolute radiometric calibration of the EUNIS-06 170-205 A channel and calibration update for CDS/NIS
The Extreme-Ultraviolet Normal-Incidence Spectrograph sounding-rocket payload
was flown on 2006 April 12 (EUNIS-06), carrying two independent imaging
spectrographs covering wave bands of 300-370 A in first order and 170-205 A in
second order, respectively. The absolute radiometric response of the EUNIS-06
long-wavelength (LW) channel was directly measured in the same facility used to
calibrate CDS prior to the SOHO launch. Because the absolute calibration of the
short-wavelength (SW) channel could not be obtained from the same lab
configuration, we here present a technique to derive it using a combination of
solar LW spectra and density- and temperature-insensitive line intensity
ratios. The first step in this procedure is to use the coordinated, cospatial
EUNIS and SOHO/CDS spectra to carry out an intensity calibration update for the
CDS NIS-1 waveband, which shows that its efficiency has decreased by a factor
about 1.7 compared to that of the previously implemented calibration. Then,
theoretical insensitive line ratios obtained from CHIANTI allow us to determine
absolute intensities of emission lines within the EUNIS SW bandpass from those
of cospatial CDS/NIS-1 spectra after the EUNIS LW calibration correction. A
total of 12 ratios derived from intensities of 5 CDS and 12 SW emission lines
from Fe Fe X - Fe XIII yield an instrumental response curve for the EUNIS-06 SW
channel that matches well to a relative calibration which relied on combining
measurements of individual optical components. Taking into account all
potential sources of error, we estimate that the EUNIS-06 SW absolute

PHOENIX model chromospheres of mid- to late-type M dwarfs
We present semi-empirical model chromospheres computed with the atmosphere
code PHOENIX. The models are designed to fit the observed spectra of five mid-
to late-type M dwarfs. Next to hydrogen lines from the Balmer series we used
various metal lines, e. g. from Fe {\sc i}, for the comparison between data and
models. Our computations show that an NLTE treatment of C, N, O impacts on the
hydrogen line formation, while NLTE treatment of less abundant metals such as
nickel influences the lines of the considered species itself. For our coolest
models we investigated also the influence of dust on the chromospheres and
found that dust increases the emission line flux.
Moreover we present an (electronically published) emission line list for the
spectral range of 3100 to 3900 and 4700 to 6800 \AA for a set of 21 M dwarfs
and brown dwarfs. The line list includes the detection of the Na {\sc i} D

Coronal Diagnostics from Narrowband Images around 30.4 nm
Images taken in the band centered at 30.4 nm are routinely used to map the
radiance of the He II Ly alpha line on the solar disk. That line is one of the
strongest, if not the strongest, line in the EUV observed in the solar
spectrum, and one of the few lines in that wavelength range providing
information on the upper chromosphere or lower transition region. However, when
observing the off-limb corona the contribution from the nearby Si XI 30.3 nm
line can become significant. In this work we aim at estimating the relative
contribution of those two lines in the solar corona around the minimum of solar
activity. We combine measurements from CDS taken in August 2008 with
temperature and density profiles from semiempirical models of the corona to
compute the radiances of the two lines, and of other representative coronal
lines (e.g., Mg X 62.5 nm, Si XII 52.1 nm). Considering both diagnosed
quantities from line ratios (temperatures and densities) and line radiances in
absolute units, we obtain a good overall match between observations and models.
We find that the Si XI line dominates the He II line from just above the limb
up to ~2 R_Sun in streamers, while its contribution to narrowband imaging in
the 30.4 nm band is expected to become smaller, even negligible in the corona
beyond ~2 - 3 R_Sun, the precise value being strongly dependent on the coronal

Italian politics have undergone momentous change in the 2007–2017 decade under the impact of the eurozone crisis, whose peak in 2011–2013 could be equated to the earlier watershed years of 1992–1994. The lasting impact of the upheaval in Italian politics in the early 1990s could still be felt in the decade of economic recession, but there were also new challenges prompted by a crisis that had its roots in international financial contagion and which unravelled under the shadow of both recession and austerity. The changes were of an economic, social, cultural, institutional, policy-oriented and political nature. If one central quintessentially political theme stands out by the end of this decade it is the apparent exhaustion of the quest for bipolarisation that was initiated in the early 1990s
Comparing extrapolations of the coronal magnetic field structure at 2.5 solar radii with multi-viewpoint coronagraphic observations
The magnetic field shapes the structure of the solar corona but we still know
little about the interrelationships between the coronal magnetic field
configurations and the resulting quasi-stationary structures observed in
coronagraphic images (as streamers, plumes, coronal holes). One way to obtain
information on the large-scale structure of the coronal magnetic field is to
extrapolate it from photospheric data and compare the results with
coronagraphic images. Our aim is to verify if this comparison can be a fast
method to check systematically the reliability of the many methods available to
reconstruct the coronal magnetic field. Coronal fields are usually extrapolated
from photospheric measurements typically in a region close to the central
meridian on the solar disk and then compared with coronagraphic images at the
limbs, acquired at least 7 days before or after to account for solar rotation,
implicitly assuming that no significant changes occurred in the corona during
that period. In this work, we combine images from three coronagraphs
(SOHO/LASCO-C2 and the two STEREO/SECCHI-COR1) observing the Sun from different
viewing angles to build Carrington maps covering the entire corona to reduce
the effect of temporal evolution to ~ 5 days. We then compare the position of
the observed streamers in these Carrington maps with that of the neutral lines
obtained from four different magnetic field extrapolations, to evaluate the
performances of the latter in the solar corona. Our results show that the
location of coronal streamers can provide important indications to discriminate

Chromosphere of K giant stars Geometrical extent and spatial structure detection
We aim to constrain the geometrical extent of the chromosphere of non-binary
K giant stars and detect any spatial structures in the chromosphere. We
performed observations with the CHARA interferometer and the VEGA beam combiner
at optical wavelengths. We observed seven non-binary K giant stars. We measured
the ratio of the radii of the photosphere to the chromosphere using the
interferometric measurements in the Halpha and the Ca II infrared triplet line
cores. For beta Ceti, spectro-interferometric observations are compared to an
non-local thermal equilibrium (NLTE) semi-empirical model atmosphere including
a chromosphere. The NLTE computations provide line intensities and contribution
functions that indicate the relative locations where the line cores are formed
and can constrain the size of the limb-darkened disk of the stars with
chromospheres. We measured the angular diameter of seven K giant stars and
deduced their fundamental parameters: effective temperatures, radii,
luminosities, and masses. We determined the geometrical extent of the
chromosphere for four giant stars. The chromosphere extents obtained range
between 16% to 47% of the stellar radius. The NLTE computations confirm that
the Ca II/849 nm line core is deeper in the chromosphere of ? Cet than either
of the Ca II/854 nm and Ca II/866 nm line cores. We present a modified version
of a semi-empirical model atmosphere derived by fitting the Ca II triplet line
cores of this star. In four of our targets, we also detect the signature of a
differential signal showing the presence of asymmetries in the chromospheres.
Conclusions. It is the first time that geometrical extents and structure in the
chromospheres of non-binary K giant stars are determined by interferometry.

Effects of a brief mindfulness-based intervention on emotional regulation and levels of mindfulness in senior students
Mindfulness-based interventions have been applied in diverse populations and achieved mental health benefits. This study examined the effects of a brief mindfulness program for emotional regulation and levels of mindfulness on senior students in Brazil. The intervention consisted of six weekly meetings attended by 30 participants. It is a pre-experimental research, with pre- and post-test comparative and correlation measurements. The preliminary results, which relied on parametrical and non-parametrical tests, revealed a reduction in total emotional regulation difficulties (p = 0.0001; r = − 0.55). Also, there was an increase in the levels of mindfulness in the subtests for both dimensions under evaluation: “Awareness” (p = 0.0001; d = 0.77) and “Acceptance” (p = 0.048; d = 0.37). By associating the amount of meditative practices performed by students with the variables, a significant positive correlation was found with the mindfulness dimension “Awareness” (rP = 0.422; p = 0.020), and there was a significant negative correlation with Difficulties in emotion regulation (rS = − 0.478; p = 0.008) and with its respective subscales “Non-acceptance” (rS = − 0.654; p = 0.0001) and “Clarity” (rS = − 0.463; p = 0.010). In conclusion, the application of a brief mindfulness-based intervention is promising in Brazilian university contexts; moreover, it can bring benefits to students, e.g., an increase in emotion regulation as well as in levels of mindfulness. The screening evaluation of environmental odors: a new dispersion modelling-based tool
Odor pollution is the biggest source of complaints from citizens concerning environmental issues after noise. Often, the need for corrective actions is evaluated through simulations performed with atmospheric dispersion models. To save resources, air pollution control institutions perform a first-level odor impact assessment, for screening purposes. This is often based on Gaussian dispersion models (GDM), which does not need high computational power. However, their outputs tend to be conservative regarding the analyzed situation, rather than representative of the real in-site conditions. Hence, regulations and guidelines adopted at an institutional level for authorization/control purposes are based on Lagrangian particle dispersion models (LPDM). These models grant a more accurate simulation of the pollutants’ dispersion even if they are more demanding regarding both technical skills and computing power. The present study aims to increase the accuracy of screening odor impact assessment by identifying the correlation function of the outputs derived from the two simulation models. The case study is placed in northern Italy, where a single-point source, with various stack heights, was considered. The obtained correlation functions allow the practitioner to have a more accurate first-level odor impact assessment, to save time for training, and to reduce the site-specific meteorological data before proceeding with the simulation. The identified functions could allow institutions to estimate the results that would have been forecasted with the application of the more complex LPDM, applying, however, the much simpler GDM. This solution grants an accurate tool which can be used to address citizens’ concerns while saving workforce and technical resources. Limitations are related to the specificity of the method regarding type sources, orography, and meteorological conditions. Comparison with other screening tools is also presented and discussed. In the eye of the storm : the Italian economy and the eurozone crisis
The eurozone crisis had a more significant and longer-lasting impact on Italy than on virtually any other member state, with the effects still visible a decade after. The extent of the shock was surprising in view of progress Italy had apparently made in the 1990s in terms of enhancing its capacity to meet the demands of European Monetary Union. The explanation for this traumatic economic experience lies in Italy’s deep, long-term, structural tensions which were placed under severe pressure during the 1990s and which were cracked open by the 2011 sovereign debt crisis. These have had long-standing economic effects as well as political ramifications in terms of a significant change in the Italy–EU relationship
