    A key to the past? Element ratios as environmental proxies in two Arctic bivalves

Understanding rapid climate change in the Arctic and its ecosystem implications requires more information on the environment at temporal resolutions and time-periods not available from instrumental records. Such information can be acquired through geochemical proxy records, but sub-annual records are rare. We analyzed shell material of bivalve mollusks (Serripes groenlandicus and Ciliatocardium ciliatum) placed on oceanographic moorings for one year in two Arctic fjords to assess the potential use of shell elemental ratios as environmental proxies. Li/Ca, Mg/Ca, Li/Mg, Li/Sr, Mn/Ca, Sr/Ca, Mo/Ca, and Ba/Ca were determined using Laser-Ablation Inductively-Coupled-Plasma Mass-Spectrometry. Combining data from moorings with previously derived sub-annual shell growth models allowed us to relate the elemental ratio patterns to oceanographic parameters (temperature, salinity, and fluorescence). Shell Ba/Ca profiles were characterized by abrupt peaks occurring 11 to 81 days after the phytoplankton bloom, as indicated by an index of seawater fluorescence. Li/Ca and Mg/Ca values exhibited significant logarithmic relationships with shell growth rate, indicated by marginal R2 values of 0.43 and 0.30, respectively. These ratios were also linearly related to temperature, with marginal R2 values of 0.15 and 0.17, respectively. Mn/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios exhibited variability among individuals and their temporal pattern was likely controlled by several unidentified factors. Mo/Ca patterns within the shells did not demonstrate correlations with any of the oceanographic parameters. Our results reflect complex relationships between elemental ratios and bivalve metabolism, methodological limitations, as well as contemporaneous environmental processes, suggesting that none of the studied elemental ratios can be used as unequivocal proxies of seawater temperature, salinity, paleoproductivity, or shell growth rate. Despite this, Ba/Ca and Li/Ca can be used as sub-annual temporal anchors in further studies because the variability of these elements was synchronized in each fjord

    Insight into aquaculture's potential of marine annelid worms and ecological concerns: a review

    Polychaetes are marine annelid worms that can contribute to aquaculture diversification. Its culture has been viable, and commercially attempted, but intensive production has progressed only in few countries around the world. In the countries with no production, marine polychaetes are imported or harvested. A strong and sustained research investment provided to a better understanding of the nutritional requirements and reproduction of some species. Recent studies showed new technical improvements, which can lead to an important progress in productivity and give a new impetus to the polychaete production. Some marine worm species were identified as good candidates for integrated multitrophic aquaculture. The development of cost-effective aquaculture techniques for marine annelid worms is essential to ensure a balance between commercial interests and the preservation of ecosystems. The influence of polychaete aquaculture on the environment and vice versa raise important concerns related to ecological security and sustainability of this activity.     Biophysical Factors Affecting the Distribution of Demersal Fish around the Head of a Submarine Canyon Off the Bonney Coast, South Australia

    We sampled the demersal fish community of the Bonney Canyon, South Australia at depths (100–1,500 m) and locations that are poorly known. Seventy-eight species of demersal fish were obtained from 12 depth-stratified trawls along, and to either side, of the central canyon axis. Distributional patterns in species richness and biomass were highly correlated. Three fish assemblage groupings, characterised by small suites of species with narrow depth distributions, were identified on the shelf, upper slope and mid slope. The assemblage groupings were largely explained by depth (ρw = 0.78). Compared to the depth gradient, canyon-related effects are weak or occur at spatial or temporal scales not sampled in this study. A conceptual physical model displayed features consistent with the depth zonational patterns in fish, and also indicated that canyon upwelling can occur. The depth zonation of the fish assemblage was associated with the depth distribution of water masses in the area. Notably, the mid-slope community (1,000 m) coincided with a layer of Antarctic Intermediate Water, the upper slope community (500 m) resided within the core of the Flinders Current, and the shelf community was located in a well-mixed layer of surface water (<450 m depth)

    Two-photon widths of the χ c0,2 states and helicity analysis for χ c2→γγ

    Based on a data sample of 106×106 ψ ′ events collected with the BESIII detector, the decays ψ ′→γχ c0,2, χ c0,2→γγ are studied to determine the two-photon widths of the χ c0,2 states. The two-photon decay branching fractions are determined to be B(χ c0→γγ)=(2. 24±0.19±0.12±0.08)×10 -4 and B(χ c2→γγ)=(3.21±0.18±0. 17±0.13)×10 -4. From these, the two-photon widths are determined to be Γ γγ(χ c0)=(2. 33±0.20±0.13±0.17)keV, Γ γγ(χ c2)=(0.63±0.04±0. 04±0.04)keV, and R=Γ γγ(χ c2)/ Γ γγ(χ c0)=0.271±0. 029±0.013±0.027, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and those from the PDG B(ψ ′→γχ c0,2) and Γ(χ c0,2) errors, respectively.     Search for a light exotic particle in J/psi radiative decays

    Using a data sample containing 1.06x10^8 psi' events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII electron-positron collider, we search for a light exotic particle X in the process psi' -> pi^+ pi^- J/psi, J/psi -> gamma X, X -> mu^+ mu^-. This light particle X could be a Higgs-like boson A^0, a spin-1 U boson, or a pseudoscalar sgoldstino particle. In this analysis, we find no evidence for any mu^+mu^- mass peak between the mass threshold and 3.0 GeV/c^2. We set 90%-confidence-level upper limits on the product-branching fractions for J/psi -> gamma A^0, A^0 -> mu^+ mu^- which range from 4x10^{-7} to 2.1x10^{-5}, depending on the mass of A^0, for M(A^0)<3.0 GeV/c^2. Only one event is seen in the mass region below 255 MeV/c^2 and this has a mu^+mu^- mass of 213.3 MeV/c^2 and the product branching fraction upper limit 5x10^{-7}.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Physical Review
