Impact of temperature on the pullout of reinforcing geotextiles from unsaturated silt

This study investigates the thermal soil-geosynthetic interaction mechanisms of reinforcing geotextiles confined in compacted silt that may be encountered when using mechanically-stabilized earth (MSE) walls as geothermal heat sinks. A thermo-mechanical geosynthetic pullout device was used that incorporates standard components for geosynthetic pullout or creep testing but also heating elements at the top and bottom of the soil box to apply boundary temperatures and dielectric sensors embedded in the soil layer to monitor distributions in temperature and volumetric water content. Two test series were performed: the first involves monotonic pullout of woven polypropylene geotextiles after reaching steady-state conditions under different boundary temperatures without a seating load, and the second involves monotonic pullout of woven polyethylene-terephthalate geotextiles after reaching steady-state conditions under different boundary temperatures with a seating pullout load. The results indicate that the pullout resistance of both geotextiles decreased with increasing temperature. Although heating led to drying of the unsaturated silt layers as expected, measurements from the second test series indicate accumulation of water at the silt-geotextile interface. An effective stress analysis considering thermal softening of soils indicates that the increase in effective saturation at the silt-geotextile interface was the cause of the decrease in pullout resistance with heating

Diseño e implementación de un controlador pid autoajustable basado en un algoritmo híbrido

Se aborda el estudio y aplicación de los clasificados como algoritmos heurísticos, los cuales son considerados técnicas que pueden dar una solución óptima de un problema a un costo computacional razonable, pero no garantizan lograr la solución en todos los casos, y son aplicados a problemas complejos donde los espacios de búsqueda de soluciones son indefinidos, y donde algoritmos como los determinísticos no logran encontrar solución, además de requerir un tiempo exponencial de ejecución. El algoritmo desarrollado (AHHLD) no solo es capaz de sintonizar sino también de optimizar los parámetros del controlador tipo PID, mediante la función objetivo del algoritmo, integrada a partir de las tres características del rendimiento del sistema (Mp, st y rt). Respecto al control PID, dentro de la implementación en simulaciones, presenta resultados ideales, debido a que no se toman en cuenta muchas de las limitantes de los sistemas reales.CONACY

Salinas Union High School District Resource Video

The Wellness Center at Harden Middle School opened in the Fall of 2019 and is new for students, parents, and faculty. Due to misconceptions about the Wellness Center and the resources offered, students are either not utilizing the Wellness Center or not using it correctly. Results from pre-surveys indicated that a combined 74.7% answered they didn’t know or sort of knew what a Wellness Center was used for. The factors contributing to this problem are the stigma surrounding mental health, parents not likely to support their children receiving services, and students dealing with socio-emotional issues that are impacting class time. The consequences of students not utilizing the Wellness Center consist of a higher risk of suicide, future drinking/substance abuse issues, and future peer problems. This project aims to address the lack of knowledge of the Wellness Center by providing an informational video that can be used at Harden Middle School and throughout the Salinas Union High School District. The expected outcomes of this project are that students, parents, and staff have a more positive and clear idea of what a Wellness Center provides and are more willing to utilize services provided geared towards mental health in the future

All Hail the Market: Immigration and Economics in a Post-Cold War Western Hemisphere

The end of the Cold War lifted the United States to the role of the sole economic superpower, and an opportune moment to address hemispheric issues was presented to Washington policymakers. By the end of the 1980s, hemispheric forced migration was on the rise, with a large portion of those forced to flee from Central America. This moment coincided with the decade characterized by an increasingly connected world, where globalization in the form of economic linkages were being proposed in the Summit of the Americas, hemispheric meetings that began in the 1990s in hopes of addressing hemispheric issues. While the free movement of goods is characteristic of neoliberal policies, the movement of people was met with resistance. The increasingly restrictive immigration policies of the 1990s provided little relief for seeking refuge in the United States. The unintended consequence of obliging to a neoliberal project is the displacement of people. This study examines the response and justification of the Clinton administration towards forced migration from Central America. Specifically, this study compares the discourse of neoliberal economic integration to the discourse of the shift toward increasingly restrictive immigration policies

Jarenni Ambriz is a Latina born living in the United States. When she was nine, her sense of home was lost when, as a result of unfortunate events, she moved to Mexico. She was a foreigner there and a foreigner when she moved back to the U.S. years later, and she has struggled with her gender and ethnic identity due to the contradictions she faced in both countries. El conocimiento científico evoluciona momento a momento, gracias a la contribución de las comunidades científicas dependientes de las universidades y centros de investigación; en este sentido, el artículo aborda una experiencia sobre la instrumentación de estrategias didácticas para el desarrollo de la competencia informática/alfabetización informacional en estudiantes de un Programa (Maestría) de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (Seminario de Investigación en Ciencias de la Administración) orientadas a: las adquisiciones de actitudes, conocimientos y habilidad en el manejo de las Tecnologías de la Información y Comunicación (TIC) para la investigación, localización, acceso a información veraz y actualizada, recuperación, análisis y difusión del conocimiento; asumiendo una actitud reflexiva para el desarrollo proyecto de investigación científica. La investigación es mixta, con alcance explicativo, diseño experimental (cuasi-experimental) y enfoque cuantitativo. El equipo de investigación tiene estudios en Biblioteconomía y Tecnología y Gestión de la Innovación, con experiencia docente en Seminarios de Investigación y dirección de tesis de postgrado

El uso del blog para fomentar el aprendizaje colaborativo en alumnos de maestría

El edublog desde una perspectiva didáctica-pedagógica constituye una herramienta para desarrollar el pensamiento crítico, analítico y reflexivo a partir del trabajo colaborativo en red. Su construcción favorece el proceso de aprendizaje a través de la producción y publicación de materiales multimedia producidos por los propios estudiantes. Tomando en consideración lo anterior, el presente estudio de tipo Cuasiexperimental muestra la experiencia del uso de blog, en que participaron 51 estudiantes inscritos en la materia de Comunicación y Tecnología, cuya relación con las herramientas tecnológicas se limitaba al uso de correo electrónico, consulta de páginas de Internet y el seguimiento de clases tipo cátedras que imparte la Universidad Virtual Liverpool, bajo la modalidad síncrona apoyadas por la plataforma Subtotal. Para efectos de este estudio se dio seguimiento a dos generaciones que produjeron cuatro blogs: en la primera experiencia se dejó libre la selección de los temas. Una vez revisados los resultados, se decidió asignar temas a la segunda generación a fin de alcanzar los objetivos planteados.The edublog from a didactic - pedagogic perspective constitutes a tool to develop the critical, analytical and reflexive thought from the collaborative work in network. Taking in consideration the previous thing, the present study of Quasiexperimental type shows the experience of the use of blog, in which there took part 51 students inscribed in the matter of Communication and Technology, which relation with the technological tools was limiting itself to the use of e-mail, consultation of Internet page and the follow-up of classes type chairs that the Virtual University gives Liverpool, under the synchronous modality supported by the Subtotal platform. For effects of this study follow-up was given to two generations who produced four blogs: in the first experience the selection of the topics was made free. Once checked the results, it was decided to assign topics to the second generation in order to reach the raised aims

El objetivo de este trabajo fue medir el uso de dispositivos móviles dentro del proceso educativo, tomando como indicadores: al participante, el uso del celular y la dimensión social. La investigación analiza el caso del módulo de Educación a distancia, que se imparte en el Instituto Latinoamericano de la Comunicación Educativa (ILCE). El artículo se organiza en cuatro apartados generales. En primer lugar, se presenta el Estado de Arte del objeto de estudio, en el cual, a partir de una revisión bibliográfica, se define el concepto de m-learning así como las ventajas de su uso en procesos educativos. En el segundo apartado se explica la experiencia realizada con alumnos del módulo de Educación a distancia. El tercero menciona la metodología y procedimiento para la recolección de datos. En el cuarto, se presenta el análisis de resultados, finalmente, se exponen las conclusiones extraídas de la discusión de los datos, donde se comprueba la importancia que está tomando la modalidad M-Learning como una metodología innovadora aplicada al proceso de enseñanza y aprendizaje, que no depende del espacio, el tiempo ni de ciertas marcas o modelos de teléfonos móviles para poder implementar actividades de aprendizaje de tipo: apoyo.The aim of this work was to measure the use of mobile devices inside the educational process, taking as indicators: to the participant, the use of the cellular one and the social dimension.
