Ultraviolet digital imaging of volcanic plumes : implementation and application to magmatic processes at basaltic volcanoes

Magmatic volatiles play a crucial role in volcanism, from magma production at depth to generation of seismic phenomena to control of eruption style. Accordingly, many models of volcano dynamics rely heavily on behavior of such volatiles. Yet measurements of emission rates of volcanic gases have historically been limited, which has restricted model verification to processes on the order of days or longer. UV cameras are a recent advancement in the field of remote sensing of volcanic SO2 emissions. They offer enhanced temporal and spatial resolution over previous measurement techniques, but need development before they can be widely adopted and achieve the promise of integration with other geophysical datasets. Large datasets require a means by which to quickly and efficiently use imagery to calculate emission rates. We present a suite of programs designed to semi-automatically determine emission rates of SO2 from series of UV images. Extraction of high temporal resolution SO2 emission rates via this software facilitates comparison of gas data to geophysical data for the purposes of evaluating models of volcanic activity and has already proven useful at several volcanoes. Integrated UV camera and seismic measurements recorded in January 2009 at Fuego volcano, Guatemala, provide new insight into the system’s shallow conduit processes. High temporal resolution SO2 data reveal patterns of SO2 emission rate relative to explosions and seismic tremor that indicate tremor and degassing share a common source process. Progressive decreases in emission rate appear to represent inhibition of gas loss from magma as a result of rheological stiffening in the upper conduit. Measurements of emission rate from two closely-spaced vents, made possible by the high spatial resolution of the camera, help constrain this model. UV camera measurements at Kilauea volcano, Hawaii, in May of 2010 captured two occurrences of lava filling and draining within the summit vent. Accompanying high lava stands were diminished SO2 emission rates, decreased seismic and infrasonic tremor, minor deflation, and slowed lava lake surface velocity. Incorporation of UV camera data into the multi-parameter dataset gives credence to the likelihood of shallow gas accumulation as the cause of such events

    Partial extinction and reinstatement

    Get PDF
Fear extinction is not permanent but more vulnerable than the original fear memory, as relapse phenomena have traditionally shown. Partial extinction has been proposed as a strategy that may serve to mitigate relapses. Partial extinction differs from the standard procedure as it includes the occasional presentation of CS-US trials at the beginning of the extinction training. The present experiment, using an aversive differential conditioning procedure, evaluates whether partial extinction can reduce reinstatement, a specific form of relapse. The results showed that partial extinction did not mitigate reinstatement but proved effective to diminish the magnitude of the US expectation after a first reacquisition trial in a final test phase. The results reported are more consistent with theories that conceives extinction as the acquisition of new inhibitory learning rather than the erasure of the original conditioning.Universidad de Málaga. Members of the genus Ranavirus, one of five genera withinthe family Iridoviridae, encompass a group of large, doublestrandedDNA viruses that infect all three classes of ectothermicvertebrates: fish, amphibians, and reptiles. Ranaviruses areglobally emerging pathogens that cause considerable morbidityand mortality among diverse populations. In North America, ranavirus epizootics are regularly reported in wild and culturedfish, amphibian, and reptile populations

Correlation between carbohydrate, protein and fat intake with serum c-reactive protein level in lung cancer patients stage IIIB-IV

Introduction: The aim of the study is to determine the correlation between carbohydrate, fat and protein intake with the serum C-Reactive Protein level in lung cancer patients stage IIIB – IV. The progression of lung cancer is influenced by immune system, genetic factors and inflammatory response, therefore CRP can be relied as one of the parameters for predicting cancer cell growth. Methods: The research with cross sectional design was conducted in Dharmais Cancer Hospital Jakarta. Subjects were recruited by consecutive sampling, 49 subjects with lung cancer stage IIIB- IV who currently not receving any treatment in Dharmais Hospital participating in this study A total of 49 subjects with lung cancer stage IIIB- IV who currently not receving any treatment were taken using consecutive sampling method. Results: The mean age of subject was 55,82 + 12,26 years old and 63,3% were male. The median value of CRP is 23,82 (0,30 - 207,29) mg/L. Conclusion: This study did not showed significant correlation between carbohydate, protein and fat intake with serum CRP level (p = 0,919; p = 0,257; p = 0,986, respectively). But on additional analysis we did found that there was a negative, non significant correlation between protein intake and serum CRP level in cancer patient stage IV, as well as fat intake and serum CRP level
