    Searching for Very High Energy Emission from Pulsars Using the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory

    There are currently over 160 known gamma-ray pulsars. While most of them are detected only from space, at least two are now seen also from the ground. MAGIC and VERITAS have measured the gamma ray pulsed emission of the Crab pulsar up to hundreds of GeV and more recently MAGIC has reported emission at 2\sim2 TeV. Furthermore, in the Southern Hemisphere, H.E.S.S. has detected the Vela pulsar above 30 GeV. In addition, non-pulsed TeV emission coincident with pulsars has been detected by many groups, including the Milagro Collaboration. These GeV-TeV observations open the possibility of searching for very-high-energy (VHE, > 100GeV) pulsations from gamma-rays pulsars in the HAWC field of view.Comment: Presented at the 34th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC2015), The Hague, The Netherlands.     Betalains and phenolic compounds of leaves and stems of Alternanthera brasiliana and Alternanthera tenella

    Betacyanins and phenolic compounds from acetonitrile:acidified water extracts of Alternanthera brasiliana and Alternanthera tenella were characterized and quantified using a high-performance liquid chromatography system coupled with diode array and electrospray mass spectrometry detection. Four betacyanins (amaranthine, isoamaranthine, betanin and isobetanin) were tentatively identified and quantified. Twenty eight phenolic compounds of four different families (hydroxybenzoic and hydroxycinnamic acids, flavones and flavonols) were separated and characterized on the basis of their accurate MS and MS/MS information out of which ten compounds were confirmed by authentic standards. These plant species could be considered as an especially rich source of natural bioactive compounds and potential food colorants. A. brasiliana showed the highest betacyanin and polyphenols content (89 μg/g and 35,243 μg/g, respectively). Among polyphenols, flavonols were the more abundant (kaempferol-glucoside, kaempferol-rutinoside and kaempferol-rhamnosyl-rhamnosyl-glycoside). Meanwhile, A. tenella showed a different polyphenols profile with flavones as major compounds (glucopyranosil-vitexin and vitexin). As a novelty, pentosyl-vitexin and pentosyl-isovitexin were detected for the first time in Alternanthera plants. Both A. brasiliana and A. tenella leaves showed high total polyphenol content and in vitro antioxidant activity (FRAP). These results provide an analytical base concerning the phenolic and betalains composition and the antioxidant properties of two members of the promising Alternanthera gender, for subsequent applications, such as functional food ingredients.Fil: Deladino, Lorena.     Quasiparticle operators with non-Abelian braiding statistics

    We study the gauge invariant fermions in the fermion coset representation of SU(N)kSU(N)_k Wess-Zumino-Witten models which create, by construction, the physical excitations (quasiparticles) of the theory. We show that they provide an explicit holomorphic factorization of SU(N)kSU(N)_k Wess-Zumino-Witten primaries and satisfy non-Abelian braiding relations.Comment: 13 pages, no figures, final version to appear in Physics Letters

    Atomic motions in the αβ\alpha\beta-region of glass-forming polymers: Molecular versus Mode Coupling Theory approach

    We present fully atomistic Molecular Dynamics simulation results on a main-chain polymer, 1,4-Polybutadiene, in the merging region of the α\alpha- and betabeta-relaxations. A real space analysis reveals the occurrence of localized motions (``β\beta-like'') in addition to the diffusive structural relaxation. A molecular approach provides a direct connection between the local conformational changes reflected in the atomic motions and the secondary relaxations in this polymer. Such local processes occur just in the time window where the β\beta-process of the Mode Coupling Theory is expected. We show that the application of this theory is still possible, and yields an unusually large value of the exponent parameter. This result might originate from the competition between two mechanisms for dynamic arrest: intermolecular packing and intramolecular barriers for local conformational changes (``β\beta-like'').Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure

    Prevalence and trends of thinness, overweight and obesity among children and adolescents aged 3-18 years across Europe: a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Introduction Increasing prevalence of both thinness and excess weight during childhood and adolescence is a significant public health issue because of short-term health consequences and long-term tracking of weight status. Monitoring weight status in Europe may serve to identify countries and regions where rates of these disorders are either slowing down or increasing to evaluate recent policies aimed at appropriate body weight, and to direct future interventions. This study protocol provides a standardised and transparent methodology to improve estimating trends of thinness, overweight and obesity in children aged 3-18 years and adolescents across the European region between 2000 and 2017. Methods and analysis This protocol is guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols (PRISMA-P) and the Cochrane Collaboration Handbook. To identify relevant studies, a search will be conducted in MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, CINAHL and Web of Science databases. From the selected studies, relevant references will be screened as supplemental sources. Finally, open search in websites from health institutions will be conducted to identify weight status data not published in scientific journals. Cross-sectional, follow-up studies and panel surveys reporting weight status (objectively measured height and weight) according to the International Obesity Task Force criteria, and written in English or Spanish will be included. Subgroup analyses will be carried out by gender, age, study year and country or European region. Discussion This study will provide a comprehensive description of weight status of children and adolescents across Europe from 2000 to 2017. The results will be disseminated in a peer-reviewed journal. This study will use data exclusively from published research or institutional literature, so institutional ethical approval is not required

    Magnetic Instabilities and Phase Diagram of the Double-Exchange Model in Infinite Dimensions

    Dynamical mean-field theory is used to study the magnetic instabilities and phase diagram of the double-exchange (DE) model with Hund's coupling J_H >0 in infinite dimensions. In addition to ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AF) phases, the DE model supports a broad class of short-range ordered (SRO) states with extensive entropy and short-range magnetic order. For any site on the Bethe lattice, the correlation parameter q of a SRO state is given by the average q=, where theta_i is the angle between any spin and its neighbors. Unlike the FM (q=0) and AF (q=1) transitions, the transition temperature of a SRO state (T_{SRO}) with 0<q<1 cannot be obtained from the magnetic susceptibility. But a solution of the coupled Green's functions in the weak-coupling limit indicates that a SRO state always has a higher transition temperature than the AF for all fillings p<1 and even than the FM for 0.26\le p \le 0.39. For 0.39<p<0.73, where both the FM and AF phases are unstable for small J_H, a SRO phase has a non-zero T_{SRO} except close to p=0.5. As J_H increases, T_{SRO} eventually vanishes and the FM dominates. For small J_H, the T=0 phase diagram is greatly simplified by the presence of the SRO phase. A SRO phase is found to have lower energy than either the FM or AF phases for 0.26\le p0 but appears for J_H\neq 0. For p near 1, PS occurs between an AF with p=1 and either a SRO or a FM phase. The stability of a SRO state at T=0 can be understood by examining the interacting DOS,which is gapped for any nonzero J_H in an AF but only when J_H exceeds a critical value in a SRO state.Comment: 38 pages, 11 figures, submitted to New Journal of Physic

    Características fisicoquímicas del aceite del mesocarpio de la coroba (Jessenia polycarpa Karst)

    Mature fruits of coroba (Jessenia polycarpa Karst), a wild palm from Cedeño municipality (Bolívar estate, Venezuela), harvested on July 1999, were washed, scalded, decorticated and then the mesocarp was separated. It was dried (70 ºC by 12 h), grounded and extraction process with n-hexane was applicated. The extract was distilled for to obtain the crude oil free of solvent. Physicochemical characteristics of crude oil from Coroba mesocarp were determined by means of Venezuelan official methods (COVENIN). The results showed: free acidity 0.72 % (as oleic acid); iodine index 48.2 (cgI2/g); peroxid value 2.32 (meq O2/kg); refraction index 1.4465 (at 25ºC); saponification number 198 (mg KOH/g); phosporus content 183 (mg/kg). The fatty acids composition was determined by gas chromatography. The major fatty acids found were: oleic acid (46.06 %), palmitic acid (28.56%) and linoleic acid (18.04%). The Coroba mesocarp is a potential raw material for Venezuelan oil industry.Frutos maduros de Coroba (Jessenia polycarpa Karst), una palmera silvestre del municipio Cedeño (Estado Bolívar, Venezuela), cosechados en el mes de Julio de 1999, fueron lavados, escaldados, pelados y despulpados. El mesocarpio obtenido fue secado (70ºC durante 12 h), molido y sometido a extracción con n-hexano. La miscela fue destilada, quedando como producto de fondo el aceite crudo. Mediante metodologías Venezolanas COVENIN se determinaron las características fisicoquímicas del aceite de mesocarpio de la Coroba, obteniéndose los siguientes resultados: acidez libre 0,72% (como ácido oleico); índice de yodo 48,23 (cgI2/g); índice de peróxidos 2,30 (meq O2/kg); índice de refracción 1,4465 (a 25 ºC); índice de saponificación 198 (mg KOH/g); contenido de fósforo 183 (mg/kg). La composición de ácidos grasos fue determinada por cromatografía de gas. Los ácidos grasos mayoritarios fueron: ácido oleico (46,06%), ácido palmítico (28,56%) y ácido linoleico (18,04%). El mesocarpio de la coroba es una materia prima potencial para la industria aceitera Venezolana

    Study of the Very High Energy Emission of M87 through its Broadband Spectral Energy Distribution

    The radio galaxy M87 is the central dominant galaxy of the Virgo Cluster. Very high-energy (VHE, ≳0.1 TeV) emission from M87 has been detected by imaging air Cherenkov telescopes. Recently, marginal evidence for VHE long-term emission has also been observed by the High Altitude Water Cherenkov Observatory, a gamma-ray and cosmic-ray detector array located in Puebla, Mexico. The mechanism that produces VHE emission in M87 remains unclear. This emission originates in its prominent jet, which has been spatially resolved from radio to X-rays. In this paper, we construct a spectral energy distribution from radio to gamma rays that is representative of the nonflaring activity of the source, and in order to explain the observed emission, we fit it with a lepto-hadronic emission model. We found that this model is able to explain nonflaring VHE emission of M87 as well as an orphan flare reported in 2005

    Long-term in situ persistence of biodiversity in tropical sky islands revealed by landscape genomics

    Tropical mountains are areas of high species richness and endemism. Two historical phenomena may have contributed to this: (1) fragmentation and isolation of habitats may have promoted the genetic differentiation of populations and increased the possibility of allopatric divergence and speciation, and; (2) the mountain areas may have allowed long-term population persistence during global climate fluctuations. These two phenomena have been studied using either species occurrence data or estimating species divergence times. However, only few studies have used intraspecific genetic data to analyse the mechanisms by which endemism may emerge at the microevolutionary scale. Here, we use landscape analysis of genomic SNP data sampled from two high-elevation plant species from an archipelago of tropical sky-islands (the Transmexican Volcanic Belt) to test for population genetic differentiation, synchronous demographic changes and habitat persistence. We show that genetic differentiation can be explained by the degree of glacial habitat connectivity among mountains, and that mountains have facilitated the persistence of populations throughout glacial/interglacial cycles. Our results support the ongoing role of tropical mountains as cradles for biodiversity by uncovering cryptic differentiation and limits to gene flow
