Industrial location and urban system: food industry in inland Spain

    Get PDF
The location of food industries in inland Spain is closely linked to the distribution of the population at the municipality level. Nevertheless, this overarching pattern hides significant variability at the branch level. Such variability is the basis for proposing a typology of branches according to their distribution across the settlement pattern, from metropolitan areas to rural villages. This typology may enhance the design of local development policies because it identifies the locational preferences for each food branch and subsequently allows for the allocation of public resources to support the activities more suitable for each specific geographical and socioeconomic setting

MIRACLE’s hybrid approach to bilingual and monolingual Information Retrieval

    Get PDF
The main goal of the bilingual and monolingual participation of the MIRACLE team at CLEF 2004 was testing the effect of combination approaches to information retrieval. The starting point is a set of basic components: stemming, transformation, filtering, generation of n-grams, weighting and relevance feedback. Some of these basic components are used in different combinations and order of application for document indexing and for query processing. Besides this, a second order combination is done, mainly by averaging or by selective combination of the documents retrieved by different approaches for a particular query

Study of the Microstructure Evolution of Low-pH Cements Based on Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) by Mid- and Near-Infrared Spectroscopy, and Their Influence on Corrosion of Steel Reinforcement

    Get PDF
Low-pH cements are designed to be used in underground repositories for high level waste. When they are based on Ordinary Portland Cements (OPC), high mineral admixture contents must be used which significantly modify their microstructure properties and performance. This paper evaluates the microstructure evolution of low-pH cement pastes based on OPC plus silica fume and/or fly ashes, using Mid-Infrared and Near-Infrared spectroscopy to detect cement pastes mainly composed of high polymerized C-A-S-H gels with low C/S ratios. In addition, the lower pore solution pH of these special cementitious materials have been monitored with embedded metallic sensors. Besides, as the use of reinforced concrete can be required in underground repositories, the influence of low-pH cementitious materials on steel reinforcement corrosion was analysed. Due to their lower pore solution pH and their different pore solution chemical composition a clear influence on steel reinforcement corrosion was detecte

Correlation technique for the compensation of diffraction widening of optical reference signals

Two-grating measurement systems are routinely employed for high-resolution measurements of angular and linear displacement. Usually, these systems incorporate zero reference codes (ZRCs) to obtain a zero reference signal (ZRS), which is used as a stage-homing signal. This signal provides absolute information of the position to the otherwise relative information provided by the two-grating incremental subsystems. A zero reference signal is commonly obtained illuminating the superposition of two identical pseudorandom codes and registering the transmitted light by means of a photodiode. To increase the resolution of the system, a reduction of the grating period and the ZRC widths is required. Due to this reduction, the diffractive effects produce a widening of the ZRS and, in turn, a loss of the measuring accuracy. In this work, we propose a method to narrow the distorted signal obtained with a Lau-based encoder, reinstating the accuracy of the ZRS. The method consists of the inclusion of a correlation mask on the detector. A theoretical model to design the mask has been developed, and experimental results have been obtained that validate the proposed technique

Impact of a Gender-Neutral HPV Vaccination Program in Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM)

[EN] A major challenge in human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine programs is the universal gender-neutral recommendation, as well as estimation of its long-term effect. The objective of this study is to predict the added benefit of male vaccination, especially in men who have sex with men (MSM), and to analyze the impact of the program on society. We propose a mathematical model of the HPV infection based on a network paradigm. Data from Spain allowed constructing the sexual network. HPV force of infection was taken from literature. Different scenarios using variable vaccine coverage in both males and females were studied. Strong herd immunity is shown in the heterosexual population, with an important decrease of HPV 6/11 infections both in men and in unvaccinated women with an only-women vaccination at 14 years of age. No impact of this program occurred in the infection incidence in MSM. This group would only benefit from a vaccination program that includes males. However, the impact at short term would be lower than in heterosexual men. The protection of MSM can only be achieved by direct vaccination of males. This may have important consequences for public health. This paper has been supported by the Spanish Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad (MINECO), the Agencia Estatal de Investigación (AEI) and Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER UE) grant MTM2017-89664-P. Effects of Vojta therapy on the motor function of children with neuromotor disorders: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

    Get PDF
[Abstract] Background: Infantile cerebral palsy is a neurological pathology that causes great morbidity, mortality, and disability in people who suffer from it, mainly affecting motor development. There are a multitude of non-pharmacological methods or therapies for its treatment. One of the main methods is Vojta therapy. This methodology acts on ontogenetic postural function and automatic postural control. Objective: This study aims to demonstrate that there are changes in the motor development of children with cerebral palsy with the application of Vojta therapy. Methods and analysis: This is a randomized controlled trial on the effectiveness of two neurorehabilitation techniques in patients with cerebral palsy conducted at the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service of the Teresa Herrera Maternal and Child Hospital of the A Coruña and Cee Health Area. The study will be conducted from January 2023 to December 2024. There will be two groups: the Vojta therapy group (n = 30) and the conventional physiotherapy group (n = 30). The measurement variables will be gross motor function as measured by the Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM) and Infant Motor Profile (IMP) scales. Ethics and dissemination: The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the University of Murcia (1823/2018) and Comité de Ética de la Investigación de A Coruña-Ferrol (2022/099)
