Information activity in digital media: will print newspapers survive without advertising?

    Get PDF
This crisis has accelerated printed press’ process to become online. ICT have transformed the information system both economically and productively. The dramatic decline in advertising revenues shakes the business model followed so far by media companies. We need new ways of financing, to allowe media survive. There are cases of new systems adopted for information activity to obtain profitability: from crowdfunding to ecommerce, supported in media audiences. All this makes us question the future of the media, in the way as they have been understood as information companies untill now

    On Tubular vs. Swung surfaces

We determine necessary and sufficient conditions for a tubular surface to be swung, and viceversa. From these characterizations, we derive two symbolic algorithms. The first one decides whether a given implicit equation, of a tubular surface, admits a swung parametrization and, in the affirmative case, it outputs such a parametrization. The second one decides whether a given swung surface parametrization is a tubular surface and, in the affirmative case, it outputs the implicit equation

Reparametrizing Swung Surfaces over the Reals

Let K⊆R be a computable subfield of the real numbers (for instance, Q). We present an algorithm to decide whether a given parametrization of a rational swung surface, with coefficients in K(i), can be reparametrized over a real (i.e., embedded in R) finite field extension of K. Swung surfaces include, in particular, surfaces of revolution

Dietary glycemic index and retinal microvasculature in adults: a cross-sectional study

    Get PDF
[EN] Objective: To analyze the relationship between dietary glycemic index (GI) and retinal microvasculature in adults. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 300 subjects from the EVIDENT II study. Dietary GI was calculated using a validated, semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Retinal photographs were digitized, temporal vessels were measured in an area 0.5–1 disc diameter from the optic disc and arteriolar-venular index (AVI) was estimated with semi-automated software. Results: AVI showed a significant difference between the tertiles of GI, after adjusting for potential confounders. The lowest AVI values were observed among subjects in the highest tertile of GI, whereas the greatest were found among those in the lowest tertile (estimated marginal mean of 0.738 vs. 0.768, p = 0.014). Conclusions: In adults, high dietary GI implies lowering AVI values regardless of age, gender and other confounding variables. Trial registration: Clinical Trials.gov Identifier: NCT02016014.

    Get PDF
Postprint (published version

Relationship between intima-media thickness of the common carotid artery and arterial stiffness in subjects with and without type 2 diabetes: a case-series report

Background: We examined the relationship between the intima-media thickness of the common carotid artery (CCA-IMT) and arterial stiffness, assessed by pulse wave velocity (PWV), the ambulatory arterial stiffness index (AASI) and the augmentation index (AIx) in subjects with and without type 2 diabetes. Methods: A case-series study was made in 366 patients (105 diabetics and 261-non-diabetics). Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring was performed on a day of standard activity with the SpaceLabs 90207 system. AASI was calculated as "1-slope" from the within-person regression of diastolic-on-systolic ambulatory blood pressure readings. PWV and AIx were measured with the SphygmoCor system, and a Sonosite Micromax ultrasound unit was used for automatic measurements of CCA-IMT. Results: PWV, AASI and CCA-IMT were found to be greater in diabetic patients, while no differences in AIx were observed between the two groups. CCA-IMT was independently correlated to the three measures of arterial stiffness in both groups. We found an increase in CCA-IMT of 0.40, 0.24 and 0.36 mm in diabetics, and of 0.48, 0.17 and 0.55 mm in non-diabetics for each unit increase in AASI, AIx and PWV. The variability of CCA-IMT was explained mainly by AASI, AIx and gender in diabetic patients, and by age, gender, AASI and PWV in non-diabetic patients. Conclusions: CCA-IMT showed a positive correlation to PWV, AASI and AIx in subjects with and without type 2 diabetes. However, when adjusting for age, gender and heart rate, the association to PWV was lost in diabetic patients, in the same way as the association to Alx in non-diabetic patients. The present study demonstrates that the three measures taken to assess arterial stiffness in clinical practice are not interchangeable, nor do they behave equally in all subjects

Association between smoking status and the parameters of vascular structure and function in adults : results from the EVIDENT study

    Get PDF
Background: The present study analyses the relation between smoking status and the parameters used to assess vascular structure and function. Methods: This cross-sectional, multi-centre study involved a random sample of 1553 participants from the EVIDENT study. Measurements: The smoking status, peripheral augmentation index and ankle-brachial index were measured in all participants. In a small subset of the main population (265 participants), the carotid intima-media thickness and pulse wave velocity were also measured. Results: After controlling for the effect of age, sex and other risk factors, present smokers have higher values of carotid intima-media thickness (p = 0.011). Along the same lines, current smokers have higher values of pulse wave velocity and lower mean values of ankle-brachial index but without statistical significance in both cases. Conclusions: Among the parameters of vascular structure and function analysed, only the IMT shows association with the smoking status, after adjusting for confounders
