Host-Specific Activation of Entomopathogenic Nematode Infective Juveniles.
Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) are potent insect parasites and have been used for pest control in agriculture. Despite the complexity of the EPN infection process, hosts are typically killed within 5 days of initial infection. When free-living infective juveniles (IJs) infect a host, they release their bacterial symbiont, secrete toxic products, and undergo notable morphological changes. Collectively, this process is referred to as "activation" and represents the point in a nematode's life cycle when it becomes actively parasitic. The effect of different host tissues and IJ age on activation, and how activation itself is related to virulence, are not well understood. Here, we employed a recently developed bioassay, which quantifies IJ activation, as a tool to address these matters. Appreciating that activation is a key part of the EPN infection process, we hypothesized that activation would positively correlate to virulence. Using the EPNs Steinernema carpocapsae and S. feltiae we found that EPN activation is host-specific and influenced by infective juvenile age. Additionally, our data suggest that activation has a context-dependent influence on virulence and could be predictive of virulence in some cases such as when IJ activation is especially low

The Energy Worker Profiler from Technologies to Skills to Realize Energy Efficiency in Manufacturing
In recent years, the manufacturing sector has been responsible for nearly 55
percent of total energy consumption, inducing a major impact on the global
ecosystem. Although stricter regulations, restrictions on heavy manufacturing
and technological advances are increasing its sustainability, zero-emission and
fuel-efficient manufacturing is still considered a utopian target. In
parallel, companies that have invested in digital innovation now need to align
their internal competencies to maximize their return on investment. Moreover, a
primary feature of Industry 4.0 is the digitization of production processes,
which offers the opportunity to optimize energy consumption. However, given the
speed with which innovation manifests itself, tools capable of measuring the
impact that technology is having on digital and green professions and skills
are still being designed. In light of the above, in this article we present the
Worker Profiler, a software designed to map the skills currently possessed by
workers, identifying misalignment with those they should ideally possess to
meet the renewed demands that digital innovation and environmental preservation
impose. The creation of the Worker Profiler consists of two steps: first, the
authors inferred the key technologies and skills for the area of interest,
isolating those with markedly increasing patent trends and identifying green
and digital enabling skills and occupations. Thus, the software was designed
and implemented at the user-interface level. The output of the self-assessment
is the definition of the missing digital and green skills and the job roles
closest to the starting one in terms of current skills; both the results enable
the definition of a customized retraining strategy. The tool has shown evidence
of being user-friendly, effective in identifying skills gaps and easily
adaptable to other contexts
The crustacean fauna of Bayan Onjuul area (Tôv Province, Mongolia) (Crustacea: Branchiopoda, Copepoda, Ostracoda)
Due to the wide extension of the country and to the shortness of the ice-free season, the inlandwater
crustacean fauna of Mongolia is, to date, incompletely known. However, based on the available
literature, Mongolian inland waters appear to be characterised by a high biodiversity, including some taxa
still waiting to be described. Novel data on the branchiopod, copepod, and ostracod crustaceans from central
Mongolian steppe, from the “Tuul” and “Umard goviin guveet-Khalhiin” hydrographical basins, are
presented herein. While large branchiopods, some anomopod families, and copepods are well-represented in
the collected samples, ostracods are rare, and the anomopod family Chydoridae is apparently absent in the
sampled water bodies. The anomopod Macrothrix dadayi and the cyclopoid Microcyclops afghanicus are here
reported for the first time for the Mongolian fauna. Furthermore, two branchiopods (i.e. Moina sp. and
Artemia sp.), three copepods (i.e. Diacyclops sp., Arctodiaptomus cf. alpinus, and Arctodiaptomus cf. wierzejskii),
and one ostracod taxon (i.e. Heterocypris sp.), were not identified to species level and therefore deserve further
study. The main ecological determinants of species distribution in the study area were examined using
canonical multivariate analysis, which explained around 40% of total variation of the species similarity
matrix; the main environmental drivers of crustacean assemblages in the study area were elevation, water
turbidity, water temperature and electrical conductivity. The ecological preferences of crustacean species in
the area are briefly discussed
Teaching and the art archivist: on strategies for rereading with a gender perspective
As Griselda Pollock has already stated, our practices and thoughts currently generate critical dissonances in the face of traditional art history, and it is there where we are enabled to «(...) imagine other ways of seeing and reading visual practices different from those enclosed in canonical training» (2007, p.141).
We propose, then, to (re)think strategies and theoretical frameworks that enable us to teach content from other perspectives. We will try to rescue archives of artistic experiences crossed by genders that promote a critical attitude, expanding the limits of visuality and generating questions that allow us to construct new knowledge outside the established canons.
Currently the Colombian industry, specifically the leather goods and footwear sector, is facing multiple problems that, from now on and with a future projection, will affect the economic, environmental and social development of the country. In this industry, not only damage occurs at the ecological level, evidenced by the high rates of contamination of aquifers, destruction of forests and the incineration of waste, but also in terms of human well-being, as these harmful practices became a threat to the health of workers in the sector (OCU, 2016). It is for this reason that an opportunity was found to cover this problem in the project, in such a way that alternatives and solutions with positive social, economic and environmental impact are generated in Colombia, contributing to the sustainable progress of the country, taking as a pillar the ergoecology. This led to a design proposal that includes a line of casual women's shoes, inspired by nature forms and made with materials recovered and transformed naturally. Its design responds to market characteristics, to ergonomic and ecological standards, and obviously to a high degree of innovation, in relation to the materials implemented. In addition to this, it is sought with this work to establish the bases to give continuity to future in a project of entrepreneurship that according to a community of sustainable work, generates benefits not only to the company, but also to those internal clients that make possible the materialization of the ideas.Diseñador (a) IndustrialPregrad
Birefringent Fourier filtering for single molecule Coordinate and Height super-resolution Imaging with Dithering and Orientation
Super-resolution imaging based on single molecule localization allows
accessing nanometric-scale information in biological samples with high
precision. However, complete measurements including molecule orientation are
still challenging. Orientation is intrinsically coupled to position in
microscopy imaging, and molecular wobbling during the image integration time
can bias orientation measurements. Providing 3D molecular orientation and
orientational fluctuations can offer new ways to assess the degree of alignment
of protein structures, which cannot be monitored by pure localization. Here we
demonstrate that by adding polarization control to phase control in the Fourier
plane of the imaging path, all parameters can be determined unambiguously from
single molecules: 3D spatial position, 3D orientation and wobbling or dithering
angle. The method, applied to fluorescent labels attached to single actin
filaments, provides precisions within tens of nanometers in position and few
degrees in direction
