Forever vulnerable : pledge for a former child soldier status
Child soldiers, as a prevalent phenomenon widely condemned by the international community, have been slowly becoming a policy priority in the humanitarian field. Regrettably, once this condition becomes part of their past, there is almost a loss of interest or even forgetfulness of their vulnerable condition. Driven by disbelief due to ICC’s disregard for the “former child soldier condition” of the defendant Dominic Ongwen, and the insufficient—and sometimes non-existent— international legal framework for former child soldiers, we propose a protective status for individuals who fall within the definition of former child soldiers. Eligibility for this status is based on the very own definition of former child soldiers, which, in turn, should highlight the heterogeneity of this group, whose vulnerability stems from the past gross violation of their human rights. Accordingly, the proposal of a protective status implies addressing different experiences that are directly linked to different protection needs. Yet, due to the number of issues that this status can raise, we selected the type of participation in hostilities as our guiding element. Nevertheless, the ultimate protection of a vulnerable group can only be obtained through a legal instrument, which is why we aim to set this status in a binding article. Thus, we ask ourselves: why are child soldiers deserving of international law’s protection, but not individuals whose past is tainted by the same violations of their human rights and whose future is conditioned by their past experiences?
Overwash prediction is very important for coastal zone
management. This work intends to identify alongshore variations in
storm impact and evaluate the role of sub-aerial and submerged
morphologies in overwash occurrence. For this study, 24 cross-shore
topo-bathymetric profiles were set on Barreta Island (Ria Formosa
barrier island system, Portugal). Pre- and post-overwash surveys were
made between August 2012 and April 2013. During overwash events,
tidal levels and wave parameters at breaking were obtained. Overwash
occurred under storm and non-storm conditions, the latter coincident
with spring high-tide. Beach morphology was spatially variable, and
changeable from one overwash episode to the next. Predictions of
overwash occurrence were made using the Overwash Potential, defined
as the difference between runup and barrier elevation. Several runup
equations were tested, and the results compared to the actual
observations. The selected predictor provided an accuracy of 88% for
the identification of the locations where overwash occurred. This study
proves that nearshore and foreshore morphologies have a major impact
on the longshore distribution of overwash.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The aquaculture activity has steeply increased since the 1960’s, being the fastest growing food production industry. The implementation of intensive aquaculture systems has contributed to this impressive development in the world food fish production; however, this practice imposes high risks on the welfare of fish, making them vulnerable to adverse impacts from disease, stress and also from environmental conditions. For the fishes’ stress control, anaesthetics are administered and the most commonly used are tricaine, benzocaine and 2-phenoxyethanol. These pharmaceuticals are administered by solubilization in the fish tank’s water, which, therefore, becomes contaminated. Nowadays, intensive aquaculture facilities are equipped with a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) where the water is treated and remains in a closed circuit. A typical RAS is planned to remove suspended solids and to control dissolved organic carbon and ammonia levels but the processes used are not prepared to eliminate pharmaceuticals. The adsorption process, using activated carbons, is a well-established technology for the removal of organic contaminants, including pharmaceuticals, and it has been proposed as tertiary treatment in RASs; however, activated carbons are very expensive.
The project of this thesis aims at the production of alternative adsorbents, using agricultural or industrial biowastes as precursors, by means of a simple, inexpensive and environmentally friendly production technique and capable to compete with the commercial activated carbons. The objective is the application of the produced adsorbents for the removal of fish anaesthetics from water in the RASs. A first evaluation about the valorisation of such residues showed that the agricultural biowastes (Eucalyptus bark, grape seeds, peach stones, walnut shells, olive waste and peanut shells) can compete with fossil coals in combustion applications (e.g., fuel and power generation). On the other hand, the biochars produced by the pyrolysis of the industrial biowastes (primary and biological paper mill sludge) have favourable properties to be used as adsorbents. The adsorption results revealed highest adsorption capacities using paper mill sludge-based adsorbents with good performance in both batch and continuous (fixed-bed column) systems. Also, it was observed that the biological sludge-based adsorbent can be employed in intensive aquaculture wastewater treatment with the same performance independently of the water characteristics (temperature, salinity and presence of organic and inorganic matter). Overall, these sludges are produced in large scale, therefore the cost associated with the precursor of these alternative adsorbents is null with the additional benefit of eliminating managing costs of such residues. Moreover, contrarily to commercial activated carbons, the production process used avoids the utilization of activating chemicals and allows the recovery of energy from these residues, so it may be considered an environmentally friendly process. For these reasons, and allied to the good results obtained for the removal of fish anaesthetics, the use of paper mill sludge-based adsorbents may be an alternative choice to be applied in RASs
Neuroprotection or neurotoxicity of illicit drugs on Parkinson’s disease
Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is currently the most rapid growing neurodegenerative disease and over the past generation, its global burden has more than doubled. The onset of PD can arise due to environmental, sporadic or genetic factors. Nevertheless, most PD cases have an unknown etiology. Chemicals, such as the anthropogenic pollutant 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) and amphetamine-type stimulants, have been associated with the onset of PD. Conversely, cannabinoids have been associated with the treatment of the symptoms’. PD and medical cannabis is currently under the spotlight, and research to find its benefits on PD is on-going worldwide. However, the described clinical applications and safety of pharmacotherapy with cannabis products are yet to be fully supported by scientific evidence. Furthermore, the novel psychoactive substances are currently a popular alternative to classical drugs of abuse, representing an unknown health hazard for young adults who may develop PD later in their lifetime. This review addresses the neurotoxic and neuroprotective impact of illicit substance consumption in PD, presenting clinical evidence and molecular and cellular mechanisms of this association. This research area is utterly important for contemporary society since illicit drugs’ legalization is under discussion which may have consequences both for the onset of PD and for the treatment of its symptoms.publishersversionpublishe
crescer no Japão.
The kimono revival is currently a process in which the kimono is becoming active,
popular and important again in Japanese society as a result of certain historical and social
factors. Through the growing number of second-hand and vintage stores dedicated to
selling kimono, as well as the creation of kimono-wearing groups, it's possible to observe
that the interest for wearing kimono in new creative and fashionable ways is growing in
Japan. What was previously a merely formal and restrictive costume, is being reinvented
and adapted to the younger generations' needs and aesthetic sensibilities. In other words,
the use of informal non-traditional kimono is being revived as street fashion.
Simultaneously, internet and social media, kimono rental services as cultural
tourism activities, and the spread of Japanese culture through the Cool Japan campaigns
have piqued the interest in kimono of people overseas. In this dissertation three case
studies represent the growing number of European people interested in learning about
kimono and wearing it as a result of its internationalization in recent years. This study
intends to analyze what kind of activities these individuals carry out in the context of the
kimono revival, and what it can mean for the future of kimono as fashionwear outside
