Over the past two decades, international intervention
in post-war settings has strictly followed liberal
assumptions and practices. Efforts to build and
shape the media in the aftermath of armed conflict
are no exception. In setting the foundations for
the rule of law, liberal democracy and free market,
external actors have (re)defined what constitutes
the mediascape – that is, the various spheres of
communication within public discourse – and how to
(re)construct it. Imprinted with modernity’s tenets
and western assumptions about the public space, this
approach has understood the mediascape narrowly
as limited to traditional, established, liberal media,
serving to validate particular actors and processes
whilst obscuring, neglecting and shutting off global
diversity. Law and technology, this paper argues, are
the two main axes through which legitimation and
exclusion are effected. A myopic focus on legal and
technological aspects of the media reduces a rich
space of local discourses, norms and practices to
western-like media legislation, training and outlets,
narrowing in turn the sites for addressing violence
and building peace.

Type-driven Synthesis of Evolving Data Mode
Modern commercial software is often framed under the umbrella of data-centric applications.
Data-centric applications define data as the main and permanent asset. These
applications use a single data model for application functionality, data management, and
analytical activities, which is built before the applications.
Moreover, since applications are temporary, in contrast to data, there is the need to
continuously evolve and change the data schema to accommodate new functionality. In
this sense, the continuously evolving (rich) feature set that is expected of state-of-the-art
applications is intrinsically bound by not only the amount of available data but also by
its structure, its internal dependencies, and by the ability to transparently and uniformly
grow and evolve data representations and their properties on the fly.
The GOLEM project aims to produce new methods of program automation integrated
in the development of data-centric applications in low-code frameworks. In this context,
one of the key targets for automation is the data layer itself, encompassing the data layout
and its integrity constraints, as well as validation and access control rules.
The aim of this dissertation, which is integrated in GOLEM, is to develop a synthesis
framework that, based on high-level specifications, correctly defines and evolves a
rich data layer component by means of high-level operations. The construction of the
framework was approached by defining a specification language to express richly-typed
specifications, a target language which is the goal of synthesis and a type-directed synthesis
procedure based on proof-search concepts.
The range of real database operations the framework is able to synthesize is demonstrated
through a case study. In a component-based synthesis style, with an extensible
library of base operations on database tables (specified using the target language) in context,
the case study shows that the synthesis framework is capable of expressing and
solving a wide variety of data schema creation and evolution problems.
A construção
Cetaceans frequently display skin marks which can be caused by diseases, parasites, and interactions among conspecifics and with human activities. For the present study, we used one year of photo-identification data for resident bottlenose dolphins of the Ría de Arousa (NW Spain). The aims of this study were to assess the types of skin marks found on bottlenose dolphins and compare them between adult males and females. Four body sections (anterior, ventral, central, and posterior) were defined to assess the prevalence, abundance, richness, and distribution of the marks. Boat-based surveys were carried out on 65 days between January and October 2017 for a duration of 352 hours, with 218 groups of dolphins observed during 98 hours. A total of 178 individuals were identified, and 21 adult sexed individuals (12 males and 9 females) were used for the analysis. Social-induced marks (tooth-rakes, nicks, and linear marks), skin disorders, and parasitic marks were observed, but none of the individuals showed human-induced injuries. All skin marks, except parasitic marks, were found on all the individuals. The abundance of marks is similar between males (mean ± SD = 130.7 ± 20.7) and females (mean ± SD = 88.3 ± 17.5) (Mann-Whitney, z = 1.53, p > 0.05). The richness in tooth-rakes was significantly higher in males, while the richness in skin disorders was significantly higher in females. Skin mark types were dependent on body section, with the posterior section exhibiting more tooth-rake marks and the anterior section exhibiting more skin disorder marks. The behavioural variation between sexes, with males exhibiting more aggressive and agonistic behaviour than females, may explain the fact that males have a higher incidence of social-induced marks. These results show that the analysis of cetacean skin marks is a research technique that can be efficiently used to assess the health and social behaviour of a population.
Risk management in manufacturing systems: case study
a International Organisation for Standardisation, ISO, e a International Automotive Task Force,
CMIP.
a eles.
Since we live in a competitive world, it is necessary to progress side by side with the growing
evolution of the market. Therefore, organisations need to be increasingly flexible and have a solid
ability to adapt to changes. Therefore, companies are interested in analysing the internal and
external factors that could compromise the continuity of the business.
Furthermore, their customers and partners want assurance of the fulfilment their requirements, which results in the companies obtaining the certifications of the Quality standards to
provide evidence to their partners and customers.
Considering technological advances and the demands of their partners, organisations such
as International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) and International Automotive Task Force
(IATF) have revised their standards over the years, ensuring that they fit the competitive world
in which we live. In this dissertation project, special attention was given to the ISO 9001:2015,
ISO 31000:2018, and IATF 16949:2016 standards since this project must respond to the requirements.
In this project, the risk management model proposed in the ISO 31000:2018 standard was
applied, contextualising it to the industrial context of CMIP. During the application of the model,
six systems present in the MES were the target of the Risk Assessment, where the identification
and evaluation of their inherent risks occur. After this evaluation, the next stage was the Risk
Treatment, where the definition of the need to update or create new contingency plans occurred,
thus responding to a requirement of IATF 16949:2016. In parallel with the Risk Assessment,
updating the points related to the DTI in the CMIP contingency plan was also carried out.
The techniques used to present the results were the failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA)
and the Risk Register (RR). The conclusion of this project debated the advantages and disadvantages of the techniques applied and their limitations. Implementing a risk management process,
allowed the organisation to act preventively in the production process
Biological effects of cellulose nanofibrils in a lung epithelial cell line
Cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) are plant-derived nanomaterials, showing advantageous physicochemical properties, renewable nature and low cost. CNFs have great potential in several industries, including forest, food, pharmaceutical and biomedicine, as drug-delivery systems or for tissue repair and regeneration. The increased production and application of CNFs leads to greater exposure of both workers and consumers, being extremely important to evaluate possible negative outcomes for human health. Due to their similarities with other fibers, such as carbon nanotubes, they may reveal adverse effects, such as carcinogenesis. The objective of this work was to evaluate the biosafety of CNFs produced by different pre-treatments - TEMPO-mediated oxidation and enzymatic hydrolysis - from a bleached industrial Eucalyptus globulus kraft pulp. For this purpose, the internalization, cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of these CNFs was analysed through different parameters: intracellular localization, cell viability and chromosome damage. Human lung epithelial cells (A549) were used, since the most frequent route of exposure is inhalation of CNFs, especially in occupational contex
How companies evaluate their investment in social media? : a field study of B2B and B2C cases
Purpose – The primordial purpose of this thesis is to understand which are the main measures of return on investment (ROI) used by B2B and B2C companies to evaluate social media marketing (SMM) programmes. Secondly, the research aims to understand how these companies invest in these kinds of marketing programmes and the metrics used to assess their effectiveness.
Method – A multiple case-studies approach was employed for this study. Data was collected from personal interviews with eight marketing managers responsible for social media activity, from four B2B and four B2C companies, in order to understand the importance of their presence on social platforms for their companies, the budget allocated to social media marketing and the measures of ROI used. Then, to go deeper in the study, an online survey based on the results of case studies was performed with 28 other companies’ marketing managers.
Findings – In general, marketing managers for both B2B and B2C companies are closer to the vision that SMM programmes “can be readily measured” through simple metrics. The principal measures used by the cases studied relate to objectives of awareness, engagement, reach and revenue. Some of the metrics identified are interaction data, conversions to sales and number of leads. Moreover, some constraints have been noted when explaining the ROI measurement process of SMM campaigns in certain companies. The case studies show some differences between B2B and B2C companies in the management of SMM, but the survey just confirms differences in the definition of SMM goals. Research limitations and future directions – Given the complexity of the topic approached and the differences between the findings of the case studies and the survey, interviews with marketing managers from more companies or more answers to the digital survey would provide a more comprehensive view of the topic as well as the generalisation to the population.
Practical implications – The research identifies several measures for B2B and B2C companies to evaluate the effectiveness of SMM programmes.
Theoretical implication – Given the increasing development of social media and its use for business purposes, this thesis is an exploratory step toward the ways firms use and evaluate the return of their investment in these channels, namely for B2B companies, where there is still little research

The information and communication technology (ICT) growth has
contributed to an ideological shift in the way we look to the education and,
specially, the learning process. The educational use of the Web 2.0 services has
developed communication, sharing and collaboration through the adoption of new
approaches and methodologies.
With the Sapo Campus project we developed an integrated platform of Web 2.0
services supported by the University de Aveiro (UA). Our main goal is to promote
and disseminate the use of this kind of services in higher education contexts in
order to promote the lifelong learning.
In this paper, we aim at characterizing the Sapo Campus platform and presenting
some preliminary results about its use. The results, in one hand, provide support to
the changes and improvements that have been introduced and, in the other hand,
they allow to look at the learning process and the way the community experiences
it
Healthcare in contexts of poverty and conflict
This dissertation is composed by a set of studies on access to and preventive healthcare in contexts of poverty, conflict and complex demographic history.
The first chapter dedicates to traditional healing practices and their role in the modern world. Using data from Indonesia, results show demand for traditional treatment changes with medical treatment prices and supply, which should be considered for policy purposes.
The second chapter studies the introduction of a co-payment component in hospital costs for Palestine refugees living in Lebanon. Patients changed their healthcare provider after the policy and evidence suggests inequalities in access to care deepened. The third chapter describes the type of households living in these camps and identifies differences between male and female-headed families in terms of budget management and mental health. We find evidence that women leaders are more fragile in terms of income and mental health compared to their male peers. The fourth and final chapter evaluates the impact of an intersectoral intervention to tackle substance abuse among teenagers in Brazil. The experiment decreased the adolescents consumption frequency and we believe more actions of this type
should be considered for similar settings
