Controlling chronic diseases through evidence-based decision making: A group-randomized trial
The Na I D resonance lines in main sequence late-type stars
We study the sodium D lines (D1: 5895.92 \AA; D2: 5889.95 \AA) in late-type
dwarf stars. The stars have spectral types between F6 and M5.5 (B-V between
0.457 and 1.807) and metallicity between [Fe/H] = -0.82 and 0.6. We obtained
medium resolution echelle spectra using the 2.15-m telescope at the argentinian
observatory CASLEO. The observations have been performed periodically since
1999. The spectra were calibrated in wavelength and in flux. A definition of
the pseudo-continuum level is found for all our observations. We also define a
continuum level for calibration purposes. The equivalent width of the D lines
is computed in detail for all our spectra and related to the colour index (B-V)
of the stars. When possible, we perform a careful comparison with previous
studies. Finally, we construct a spectral index (R_D') as the ratio between the
flux in the D lines, and the bolometric flux. We find that, once corrected for
the photospheric contribution, this index can be used as a chromospheric
activity indicator in stars with a high level of activity. Additionally, we
find that combining some of our results, we obtain a method to calibrate in

Experimental estimation of the dimension of classical and quantum systems
An overwhelming majority of experiments in classical and quantum physics make
a priori assumptions about the dimension of the system under consideration.
However, would it be possible to assess the dimension of a completely unknown
system only from the results of measurements performed on it, without any extra
assumption? The concept of a dimension witness answers this question, as it
allows one to bound the dimension of an unknown classical or quantum system in
a device-independent manner, that is, only from the statistics of measurements
performed on it. Here, we report on the experimental demonstration of dimension
witnesses in a prepare and measure scenario. We use pairs of photons entangled
in both polarization and orbital angular momentum to generate ensembles of
classical and quantum states of dimensions up to 4. We then use a dimension
witness to certify their dimensionality as well as their quantum nature. Our
results open new avenues for the device-independent estimation of unknown

Halo globular clusters observed with AAOmega: dark matter content, metallicity and tidal heating
Globular clusters have proven to be essential to our understanding of many
important astrophysical phenomena. Here we analyse spectroscopic observations
of ten Halo globular clusters to determine their dark matter content, their
tidal heating by the Galactic disc and halo, describe their metallicities and
the likelihood that Newtonian dynamics explain their kinematics. We analyse a
large number of members in all clusters, allowing us to address all these
issues together, and we have included NGC 288 and M30 to overlap with previous
studies. We find that any flattening of the velocity dispersion profiles in the
outer regions of our clusters can be explained by tidal heating. We also find
that all our GCs have M/L_V < 5, therefore, we infer the observed dynamics do
not require dark matter, or a modification of gravity. We suggest that the lack
of tidal heating signatures in distant clusters indicates the Halo is not
triaxial. The isothermal rotations of each cluster are measured, with M4 and
NGC 288 exhibiting rotation at a level of 0.9 +/- 0.1 km/s and 0.25 +/- 0.15
km/s, respectively. We also indirectly measure the tidal radius of NGC 6752,
determining a more realistic figure for this cluster than current literature
values. Lastly, an unresolved and intriguing puzzle is uncovered with regard to

Estimating Population Parameters using the Structured Serial Coalescent with Bayesian MCMC Inference when some Demes are Hidden
Using the structured serial coalescent with Bayesian MCMC and serial samples, we estimate population size when some demes are not sampled or are hidden, ie ghost demes. It is found that even with the presence of a ghost deme, accurate inference was possible if the parameters are estimated with the true model. However with an incorrect model, estimates were biased and can be positively misleading. We extend these results to the case where there are sequences from the ghost at the last time sample. This case can arise in HIV patients, when some tissue samples and viral sequences only become available after death. When some sequences from the ghost deme are available at the last sampling time, estimation bias is reduced and accurate estimation of parameters associated with the ghost deme is possible despite sampling bias. Migration rates for this case are also shown to be good estimates when migration values are low
