Rewriting in higher dimensional linear categories and application to the affine oriented Brauer category
In this paper, we introduce a rewriting theory of linear monoidal categories.
Those categories are a particular case of what we will define as linear (n,
p)-categories. We will also define linear (n, p)-polygraphs, a linear adapation
of n-polygraphs, to present linear (n -- 1, p)-categories. We focus then on
linear (3, 2)-polygraphs to give presentations of linear monoidal categories.
We finally give an application of this theory in linear (3, 2)-polygraphs to
prove a basis theorem on the category AOB with a new method using a rewriting
property defined by van Ostroom: decreasingness
Mapping natural habitats using remote sensing and Sparse partial least square discriminant analysis
This work presents a novel approach for mapping the spatial distribution of natural habitats in the "Foothills of Larzac" Natura 2000 listed site located in a French Mediterranean Biogeographical Region. Sparse Partial Least Square Discriminant Analysis was used to analyze two RapidEye datasets (June 2009 and July 2010) with the purpose of choosing the most informative spectral, textural and thematic variables that allow discriminating the classes of habitats. The Sparse Partial Least Square Discriminant Analysis selected relevant and stable variables for the discrimination of habitat classes that could be linked to ecological or biophysical characteristics. It also gave insight into the similarities and the differences between habitats classes with comparable physiognomic characteristics. The highest user accuracy was obtained for dry improved grasslands (u=91.97%) followed by riparian ash woods (u= 88.38%). These results are very encouraging given that these two classes were identified in Annex 1 of the EC Habitats Directive as of community interest. Due to limited data input requirements and to its computational efficiency, the approach developed in this paper is a good alternative to other types of variable selection approaches in a supervised classification framework and can be easily transferred to other Natura 2000 sites
Simple performance evaluation of pulsed spontaneous parametric down-conversion sources for quantum communications
Fast and complete characterization of pulsed spontaneous parametric down
conversion (SPDC) sources is important for applications in quantum information
processing and communications. We propose a simple method to perform this task,
which only requires measuring the counts on the two output channels and the
coincidences between them, as well as modeling the filter used to reduce the
source bandwidth. The proposed method is experimentally tested and used for a
complete evaluation of SPDC sources (pair emission probability, total losses,
and fidelity) of different bandwidths. This method can find applications in the
setting up of SPDC sources and in the continuous verification of the quality of
quantum communication links
Effects of the vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and related peptides on glioblastoma cell growth in vitro
The growth rate of numerous cancer cell lines is regulated in part by actions of neuropeptides of the vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) family, which also includes pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating peptide (PACAP), glucagon, and peptide histidine/isoleucine (PHI). The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of these peptides on the growth of the rat glioblastoma cell line C6 in vitro. We also sought to determine which binding sites were correlated with the effects observed. Proliferation studies performed by means of a CyQuant trade mark assay showed that VIP and PACAP strongly stimulated C6 cell proliferation at most of the concentrations tested, whereas PHI increased cell proliferation only when associated with VIP. Two growth hormone-releasing factor (GRF) derivatives and the VIP antagonist hybrid peptide neurotensin-VIP were able to inhibit VIP-induced cell growth stimulation, even at very low concentrations. Binding experiments carried out on intact cultured C6 cells, using 125I-labeled VIP and PACAP as tracers, revealed that the effects of the peptides on cell growth were correlated with the expression on C6 cells of polyvalent high-affinity VIP-PACAP binding sites and of a second subtype corresponding to very high-affinity VIP-selective binding species. The latter subtype, which interacted poorly with PACAP with a 10,000-fold lower affinity than VIP, might mediate the antagonist effects of neurotensin- VIP and of both GRF derivatives on VIP-induced cell growth stimulation
Historical droughts in Mediterranean regions during the last 500 years: a data/model approach
International audienceWe present here a new method for comparing the output of General Circulation Models (GCMs) with proxy-based reconstructions, using time series of reconstructed and simulated climate parameters. The method uses k-means clustering to allow comparison between different periods that have similar spatial patterns, and a fuzzy logic-based distance measure in order to take reconstruction errors into account. The method has been used to test two coupled ocean-atmosphere GCMs over the Mediterranean region for the last 500 years, using an index of drought stress, the Palmer Drought Severity Index. The results showed that, whilst no model was able to exactly simulate the reconstructed changes, all simulations were an improvement over using the mean climate. Further, a good match was found after 1650 with a model run that took into account changes in volcanic forcing, solar irradiance, and greenhouse gases. A more detailed investigation of the output of this model showed the existence of a set of atmospheric circulation patterns linked to the patterns of drought stress: 1) a blocking pattern over northern Europe linked to dry conditions in the south prior to the Little Ice Age (LIA) and during the 20th century; 2) a NAO-positive like pattern with increased westerlies during the LIA; 3) a NAO-negative like period shown in the model prior to the LIA, but that occurs most frequently in the data during this period. The results of the comparison emphasise the importance of the inclusion of the various forcings in the models and help to understand the atmospheric changes connected to reconstructed climate changes
Engineered arrays of NV color centers in diamond based on implantation of CN- molecules through nanoapertures
We report a versatile method to engineer arrays of nitrogen-vacancy (NV)
color centers in dia- mond at the nanoscale. The defects were produced in
parallel by ion implantation through 80 nm diameter apertures patterned using
electron beam lithography in a PMMA layer deposited on a diamond surface. The
implantation was performed with CN- molecules which increased the NV defect
formation yield. This method could enable the realization of a solid-state
coupled-spin array and could be used for positioning an optically active NV
center on a photonic microstructure.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure
Synapto-protective drugs evaluation in reconstructed neuronal network
Chronic neurodegenerative syndromes such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, or acute syndromes such as ischemic stroke or traumatic brain injuries are characterized by early synaptic collapse which precedes axonal and neuronal cell body degeneration and promotes early cognitive impairment in patients. Until now, neuroprotective strategies have failed to impede the progression of neurodegenerative syndromes. Drugs preventing the loss of cell body do not prevent the cognitive decline, probably because they lack synapto-protective effects. The absence of physiologically realistic neuronal network models which can be easily handled has hindered the development of synapto-protective drugs suitable for therapies. Here we describe a new microfluidic platform which makes it possible to study the consequences of axonal trauma of reconstructed oriented mouse neuronal networks. Each neuronal population and sub-compartment can be chemically addressed individually. The somatic, mid axon, presynaptic and postsynaptic effects of local pathological stresses or putative protective molecules can thus be evaluated with the help of this versatile “brain on chip” platform. We show that presynaptic loss is the earliest event observed following axotomy of cortical fibers, before any sign of axonal fragmentation or post-synaptic spine alteration. This platform can be used to screen and evaluate the synapto-protective potential of several drugs. For instance, NAD+ and the Rho-kinase inhibitor Y27632 can efficiently prevent synaptic disconnection, whereas the broad-spectrum caspase inhibitor zVAD-fmk and the stilbenoid resveratrol do not prevent presynaptic degeneration. Hence, this platform is a promising tool for fundamental research in the field of developmental and neurodegenerative neurosciences, and also offers the opportunity to set up pharmacological screening of axon-protective and synapto-protective drugs
