A Profile of Premature Birth in Erie County

Produced by the United Way of Buffalo & Erie County and the United Way Healthy Start, Healthy Future for All Coalition, this report examines why it is important to reduce premature birth in Erie County. A premature birth is a birth that occurs with less than 37 weeks gestation. Even if a mother is healthy and follows all of the preventative measures, she may still experience a premature birth. Babies born at 39 to 40 weeks gestation have the best chance of being healthy. We can work to reduce premature birth by addressing modifiable risk factors that make premature birth more likely to occur

One Loop Renormalizability of Spontaneously Broken Gauge Theory with a Product of Gauge Groups on Noncommutative Spacetime: the U(1) x U(1) Case

A generalization of the standard electroweak model to noncommutative spacetime would involve a product gauge group which is spontaneously broken. Gauge interactions in terms of physical gauge bosons are canonical with respect to massless gauge bosons as required by the exact gauge symmetry, but not so with respect to massive ones; and furthermore they are generally asymmetric in the two sets of gauge bosons. On noncommutative spacetime this already occurs for the simplest model of U(1) x U(1). We examine whether the above feature in gauge interactions can be perturbatively maintained in this model. Surveying Standard Model Flux Vacua on T6/Z2×Z2T^6/Z_2\times Z_2

We consider the SU(2)LxSU(2)R Standard Model brane embedding in an orientifold of T6/Z2xZ2. Within defined limits, we construct all such Standard Model brane embeddings and determine the relative number of flux vacua for each construction. Supersymmetry preserving brane recombination in the hidden sector enables us to identify many solutions with high flux. We discuss in detail the phenomenology of one model which is likely to dominate the counting of vacua. While Kahler moduli stabilization remains to be fully understood, we define the criteria necessary for generic constructions to have fixed moduli.Comment: 30 pages, LaTeX, v2: added reference

Socially engaged photography and wellbeing: reflections on a case study in the northwest of England

This paper describes a 9-month project commissioned by Halton Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and Liverpool photography organisation, Open Eye Gallery. Socially engaged photographers worked with local residents from the Windmill Hill estate in Runcorn to describe healthy and unhealthy aspects of the area. Six women were trained to use cameras to document everyday things that mattered to them. Through focus groups they discussed what these photographs revealed about the health and ill-health of the area. The resulting exhibition, As and When, told their story. Despite being a deprived area with more than average incidence of illness, they identified many positive things that enhanced their sense of wellbeing and resilience. The benefits of the project included increased social engagement and participation, an improved sense of vitality and rejuvenation, emotional benefits, a feeling of greater political agency and increased visual literacy. This paper outlines the model of practice developed with the support of CCG and in collaboration with local stakeholders. It makes a case for the value and the ways in which clusters of general practices could develop links and work with health assets in their local communities

Key access and utilization descriptors for pearl millet genetic resources

This minimum list consists of an initial set of characterization and evaluation descriptors for pearl millet utilization. This strategic set of descriptors, together with passport data, will become the basis for the global accession level information portal being developed by Bioversity International with the financial support of the Global Crop Diversity Trust (GCDT). It will facilitate access to and utilization of pearl millet accessions held in genebanks and does not preclude the addition of further descriptors, should data subsequently become available. Biotic and abiotic stresses included in the list were chosen because of their cosmopolitan nature, wide geographical occurrence and significant economic impact

The Dark Side of Transfer Pricing: Its Role in Tax Avoidance and Wealth Retentiveness

In conventional accounting literature, ?transfer pricing? is portrayed as a technique for optimal allocation of costs and revenues amongst divisions, subsidiaries and joint ventures within a group of related entities. Such representations of transfer pricing simultaneously acknowledge and occlude how it is deeply implicated in processes of wealth retentiveness that enable companies to avoid taxes and facilitate the flight of capital. A purely technical conception of transfer pricing calculations abstracts them from the politico-economic contexts of their development and use. The context is the modern corporation in an era of globalized trade and its relationship to state tax authorities, shareholders and other possible stakeholders. Transfer pricing practices are responsive to opportunities for determining values in ways that are consequential for enhancing private gains, and thereby contributing to relative social impoverishment, by avoiding the payment of public taxes. Evidence is provided by examining some of the transfer prices practices used by corporations to avoid taxes in developing and developed economies

Caught in the cross fire: Children's right to education during conflict - the case of Nepal 1996-2006

The article focuses on the impact on children, schools and education during the 10year conflict in Nepal and raises questions for further research on schooling in the post-conflict era. The article is based on research undertaken as part of a British Council funded Higher Education Link. Focus group discussions and interviews were conducted with school children, parents, teachers and community leaders between 2004 and 2006 and draws on informal discussions and observations with NGOs and teachers in the post-conflict period, including NGOs visual methods to enable children's voices to be heard in the peace process. © 2012 National Children's Bureau and Blackwell Publishing Limited
