    Chilean adolescents’ sex differences in subjective well-being in international context

    El bienestar subjetivo es un aspecto importante del desarrollo de niños, niñas y adolescentes. Estudios previos han evidenciado que el bienestar subjetivo presenta diferencias según sexo, advirtiéndose en diversos países, que las mujeres presentan un puntaje menor respecto al de los hombres, usando diferentes escalas. Sin embargo, el sentido de esta diferencia no siempre se presenta a favor de los hombres. El presente estudio analiza los datos de dos muestras de adolescentes chilenos de séptimo grado de educación básica en escuelas urbanas (N1=776, N2=336), usando los datos del International Survey of Children´s Well-being (ISCWeB). Se comparan los puntajes de dos medidas de bienestar subjetivo: Student´s Life Satisfaction Scale (SLSS) y Overall Life Satisfaction (OLS) como una medida global de bienestar subjetivo y se presentan los resultados de ambas muestras en el marco de los demás países que integran el estudio internacional. Los resultados señalan que en Chile los niños presentan un mayor bienestar subjetivo que las niñas, similar a lo que se aprecia en algunos países desarrollados. Se discuten los resultados en función de los antecedentes presentados que podrían explicar dichas diferencias en favor de un grupo o de otro.Subjective well-being is an important aspect of children and adolescent’s development. Previous studies shown that subjective well-being presents differences according to sex, in different countries women have a lower score compared to men considering different scales. However, often studies have shown the meaning of this difference is not always presented in favor of men. The present study analyzes data from two samples of Chilean adolescents from 7th grade in urban schools (N1 = 776, N2 = 336), based on the International Survey of Children´s Well-being (ISCWeB) project. Scores of two measures of subjective well-being are compared: Student Life Satisfaction Scale (SLSS) and Global Life Satisfaction (OLS) use as general measures of subjective well-being, considering the Chilean sample and the international context. Results show that in Chile, men have a higher subjective well-being compared to women, like to what happens in other developed countries. Results are discussed based on different hypotheses to explain the differences in favor of one group or another

    Rheological and physicochemical evaluation of thermal gelling of surimi from silver catfish

    O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as características reológicas e físico-químicas da gelificação térmica do surimi de jundiá (Rhamdia quelen). Utilizaram-se quatro tratamentos térmicos, três estágios duplos – pré-aquecimentos a 60oC durante 30, 45 e 60 min, seguidos de aquecimento a 90oC por 15 min, e um único aquecimento direto a 90oC por 15 min – e três formulações: duas com inibidores protéicos – soroalbumina bovina + alfa2-macroglobulina e clara de ovo – e uma sem inibidores. Amostras com inibidores protéicos e aquecimento direto alcançaram melhor gelificação, pelo incremento no módulo de elasticidade e decréscimo no ângulo de fase. Os géis pré-aquecidos apresentaram grande oscilação dos parâmetros viscoelásticos, o que comprometeu a formação da rede protéica tridimensional, formada durante a gelificação térmica do surimi. A concentração de peptídeos solúveis não sofreu alteração significativa, mesmo durante os estágios duplos, o que indica a ausência de proteólise, além de mostrar a proteção pelos inibidores à matriz protéica.The objective of this work was to evaluate the rheological and physicochemical properties of thermal gelling of surimi from silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen).     The global distribution and environmental drivers of the soil antibiotic resistome

    Background: Little is known about the global distribution and environmental drivers of key microbial functional traits such as antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Soils are one of Earth’s largest reservoirs of ARGs, which are integral for soil microbial competition, and have potential implications for plant and human health. Yet, their diversity and global patterns remain poorly described. Here, we analyzed 285 ARGs in soils from 1012 sites across all continents and created the first global atlas with the distributions of topsoil ARGs. Results: We show that ARGs peaked in high latitude cold and boreal forests. Climatic seasonality and mobile genetic elements, associated with the transmission of antibiotic resistance, were also key drivers of their global distribution. Dominant ARGs were mainly related to multidrug resistance genes and efflux pump machineries. We further pinpointed the global hotspots of the diversity and proportions of soil ARGs.     The global contribution of soil mosses to ecosystem services

    Soil mosses are among the most widely distributed organisms on land. Experiments and observations suggest that they contribute to terrestrial soil biodiversity and function, yet their ecological contribution to soil has never been assessed globally under natural conditions. Here we conducted the most comprehensive global standardized field study to quantify how soil mosses influence 8 ecosystem services associated with 24 soil biodiversity and functional attributes across wide environmental gradients from all continents. We found that soil mosses are associated with greater carbon sequestration, pool sizes for key nutrients and organic matter decomposition rates but a lower proportion of soil-borne plant pathogens than unvegetated soils. Mosses are especially important for supporting multiple ecosystem services where vascular-plant cover is low. Globally, soil mosses potentially support 6.43 Gt more carbon in the soil layer than do bare soils. The amount of soil carbon associated with mosses is up to six times the annual global carbon emissions from any altered land use globally. The largest positive contribution of mosses to soils occurs under a high cover of mat and turf mosses, in less-productive ecosystems and on sandy and salty soils. Our results highlight the contribution of mosses to soil life and functions and the need to conserve these important organisms to support healthy soils.The study work associated with this paper was funded by a Large Research Grant from the British Ecological Society (no.     ¿Cómo se discute la violencia contra las mujeres en el espacio público digital?: divulgación de resultados investigación-docencia

    Este documento presenta los resultados más relevantes de un proceso de investigación y docencia desarrollado en el marco de los cursos C-1103 Comunicación y Poder y C-1002 Comunicación Inclusiva de la Concentración en Comunicación Social de la Escuela de Ciencias de la Comunicación Colectiva durante el ciclo II-2020, en articulación con el Programa de Narrativas, Género y Comunicación del Centro de Investigación en Comunicación – CICOM-, de la Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR). El proyecto se planteó objetivos en tres ámbitos: el de la investigación, el de la enseñanza-aprendizaje y el de la política pública. En primer lugar, esta investigación responde al esfuerzo de articulación entre el CICOM y el Instituto Nacional de las Mujeres, INAMU, institución que coordina a las 22 instituciones que conforman el Sistema Nacional de prevención y atención de la violencia contra las mujeres e intrafamiliar (Ley 8688), encargado de implementar la Política Nacional para la atención y prevención de la violencia contra las mujeres de todas las edades, PLANOVI 2017-2032 y del cual la UCR es parte. Esta política, particularmente los ejes 1 y 2, centran su interés en la comunicación como vehículo fundamental para conseguir el cambio cultural y propiciar la erradicación de la violencia contra las mujeres y la promoción de las masculinidades no violentas. Para ello, se requiere diseñar e implementar una estrategia integrada de comunicación que exige, como punto de partida, determinar cuáles son los discursos sobre la violencia contra las mujeres que circulan en el espacio público costarricense en la actualidad.     Global hotspots for soil nature conservation

However, unlike for plants and animals, a global assessment of hotspots for soil nature conservation is still lacking2. This hampers our ability to establish nature conservation priorities for the multiple dimensions that support the soil system: from soil biodiversity to ecosystem services. Here, to identify global hotspots for soil nature conservation, we performed a global field survey that includes observations of biodiversity (archaea, bacteria, fungi, protists and invertebrates) and functions (critical for six ecosystem services) in 615 composite samples of topsoil from a standardized survey in all continents. We found that each of the different ecological dimensions of soils—that is, species richness (alpha diversity, measured as amplicon sequence variants), community dissimilarity and ecosystem services—peaked in contrasting regions of the planet, and were associated with different environmental factors. Temperate ecosystems showed the highest species richness, whereas community dissimilarity peaked in the tropics, and colder high-latitudinal ecosystems were identified as hotspots of ecosystem services. These findings highlight the complexities that are involved in simultaneously protecting multiple ecological dimensions of soil. We further show that most of these hotspots are not adequately covered by protected areas (more than 70%), and are vulnerable in the context of several scenarios of global change. Our global estimation of priorities for soil nature conservation highlights the importance of accounting for the multidimensionality of soil biodiversity and ecosystem services to conserve soils for future generations.This project received funding from the British Ecological Society (agreement LRA17\1193; MUSGONET).
