In recent times, the phenomenon of food hypersensitivity has been the growing problem for both health and public sectors. In recent years, an increase in the occurrence of reactions affiliated with food intake has recorded which results in more frequent modification of the diet. Despite numerous studies, nomenclature and diagnosis of abnormal body reactions to ingested food has not still been easy. The article discusses the issues of both the terminology and diagnostics, as well as the factors that may affect the formation of hypersensitivity reactions

Cancer diseases are among the most common among society. In Poland, more than 100,000 people suffer from cancer of the hematopoietic system. people, and the diagnosis is made to almost six thousand Poles each year. The disease is associated with a long and tiring treatment process, which, like its essence, affects the patient's well-being. The oncology patient spends a large part of his life in the hospital where he is under the care of a medical team. It stands out as a physician, psychologist and nurse, taking care of the patient in a multidimensional and personalized way. Especially between the patient and the nurse, a trust is established, thanks to which the patient has a sense of security and more willingly succumbs to all therapeutic activities performed by him. The aim of this study was to determine the nurse's tasks towards a patient with cancer of the hematopoietic system. The study was conducted using the individual case study method, and the knowledge of the patient's biopsychosocial status was collected on the basis of a patient data sheet, enriched with appropriately selected scales

We Do Not Like It: A Likert-Type Scale Survey on the Attitudes of a Young Population towards the Transhumanistic Theory of Education

Transhumanists assume that future education may be purely based on technological stimulation. The question is: Do potential clients of education “like” such vision? In order to check this, we asked over one thousand two hundred young Poles to evaluate their identification with the transhumanistic theory of education. The results are quite surprising: its show that they disagree with the assumptions of this theory, while they rather agree with the postulates of more traditional (and no technology-based) concepts of education

The influence of 4% acetic acid (pH~2.4) and an alkaline solution of NaOH (pH~10) on the corrosion resistance and micromechanical properties of disilicate crystals containing glass-ceramics (LS2-GC’s) is studied. Partially crystallized lithium metasilicate crystal containing glass-ceramics (LS-GC’s) are annealed to fully LS2-GC’s using a one stage and a two-stage heating to induce nucleation. Materials with various chemical and wear resistance are prepared. The content of the crystalline phase in the material annealed in the two-stage process A is 60.0% and increases to 72.2% for the material heated in the one-stage process B. The main elements leached in the acidic medium are lithium and phosphorus, while lithium, silicon, and phosphorus leached into the alkaline environment. Material B exhibits better chemical resistance to the corrosive influence of 4% acetic acid under quasi-dynamic conditions. In the alkaline corrosion medium, silicon is leached from material A faster compared to the material B. After prolonged exposure to acidic or basic environments, both materials show evidence of surface structural changes. A decrease of the sliding wear resistance is observed after corrosion in the acidic environment under dynamic conditions. In both materials, the wear rate increases after corrosion

Edukacja chorych na cukrzycę wpływa na obniżenie ryzyka późnych powikłań cukrzycy. Celem pracy było określenie poziomu wiedzy pacjentów z cukrzycą typu 2 w zakresie profilaktyki zespołu stopy cukrzycowej. Materiał i metoda. Metodą wykorzystaną w pracy był sondaż diagnostyczny, techniką testowanie wiedzy pacjentów, a narzędziem autorski test wiadomości. Badania zostały przeprowadzone wśród 100 dorosłych pacjentów z cukrzycą typu 2 w SPSK4 w Lublinie w 2014 roku. Wyniki badań. Pacjenci z cukrzycą posiadali dużą wiedzę w zakresie zalecanej diety, wysiłku fizycznego i zasad monitorowania cukrzycy. Deficyt dotyczył znajomości istoty i czynników ryzyka zespołu stopy cukrzycowej. Poziom wiedzy badanych był związany z ich wykształceniem, czasem trwania choroby i miejscem zamieszkania. Chorzy z wykształceniem wyższym i średnim posiadali wyższy poziom wiedzy niż pacjenci z wykształceniem zawodowym i podstawowym. Wnioski. Przygotowanie chorych do profilaktyki zespołu stopy cukrzycowej było niewystarczające. Badania wskazują na konieczność zintensyfikowania działań edukacyjnych środowiska medycznego wśród chorych z cukrzycą. Słowa kluczowe: profilaktyka, stopa cukrzycowa, edukacja chorych Abstract Backgroud. Education of diabetic patients reduces the risk of long-term diabetic complications. The purpose of study was to assess the knowledge of patients with type 2 diabetes on the prophylaxis of diabetic foot. Material and methods. The problem was investigated by means of a survey to test patients’ knowledge (technique) using test of knowledge as a tool. The survey was carried out among 100 patients with type 2 diabetes in PSK4, Lublin, in 2014. Results. The diabetic patients demonstrated wide knowledge on the recommended diet, physical effort and rules of monitoring diabetes. However certain deficit was found in the area of knowledge on risk factors for diabetic foot and the problem itself. The level of knowledge correlated with respondents’ education, disease duration and the place of living. The patients with higher and secondary education presented higher level of knowledge compared with the patients with vocational and primary education. Longer period of disease duration correlated with better knowledge on the disease. The respondents living in the country showed higher deficit compared to the respondents from the city. The age or gender of the respondents did not affect their preparation to the prophylaxis of diabetic foot. Conclusions. The results found the patients were not sufficiently prepared to the prophylaxis of diabetic foot. The results suggest the need to intensify educational activities of medical personnel addressed at diabetic patients. Keywords: prevention, diabetic foot, patient educatio

PEP444c encoded within the MIR444c gene regulates microRNA444c accumulation in barley

    No full text
Abstract MicroRNAs are small, noncoding RNA molecules that regulate the expression of their target genes. The MIR444 gene family is present exclusively in monocotyledons, and microRNAs444 from this family have been shown to target certain MADS-box transcription factors in rice and barley. We identified three barley MIR444 (MIR444a/b/c) genes and comprehensively characterised their structure and the processing pattern of the primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs444). Pri-microRNAs444 undergo extensive alternative splicing, generating functional and nonfunctional pri-miRNA444 isoforms. We show that barley pri-miRNAs444 contain numerous open reading frames (ORFs) whose transcripts associate with ribosomes. Using specific antibodies, we provide evidence that selected ORFs encoding PEP444a within MIR444a and PEP444c within MIR444c are expressed in barley plants. Moreover, we demonstrate that CRISPR-associated endonuclease 9 (Cas9)-mediated mutagenesis of the PEP444c-encoding sequence results in a decreased level of PEP444 transcript in barley shoots and roots and a 5-fold reduced level of mature microRNA444c in roots. Our observations suggest that PEP444c encoded by the MIR444c gene is involved in microRNA444c biogenesis in barley

Anxiety in Polish adult patients with inborn errors of immunity: a cross-sectional study

    No full text
BackgroundPatients with inborn errors of immunity (IEI) experience recurrent infections, autoimmunity, and malignancies. Owing to repeated medical procedures, the need for constant treatment and surveillance, and the unpredictable course of the disease, patients with IEI are prone to develop mental health disorders, including anxiety. In this study, we aimed to assess the prevalence and level of anxiety symptoms in adult Polish patients with IEI and explore the determinants of anxiety in this group of patients.MethodsData from 105 Polish patients with IEI were collected via the hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS), brief illness perception questionnaire (B-IPQ), illness cognition questionnaire (ICQ), Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), and a questionnaire on general health and demographic data. For statistical analyses of data, the normality of distribution of quantitative data was assessed, and internal consistency of tests was investigated using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient; moreover, we performed the analysis of correlations and between-group differences, and path analysis to explore causal relationships. Significance was considered at p < 0.050.ResultsThirty-eight (36.2%) patients had anxiety symptoms (HADS-A ≥ 8); 14 (13.3%) patients had severe anxiety (score ≥ 11), and 24 (22.9%) had moderate anxiety (score of 8–10). Patients with poor sleep quality, higher pain frequency, younger age, and no fixed income had higher anxiety scores than others. Emotional and cognitive representations of illness were positively correlated with anxiety levels. Intense anxiety was related to more negative illness perception, higher helplessness, lower illness acceptance, and lower perceived benefits.DiscussionAnxiety is common in patients with IEI. However, results indicate that it is not related to a more severe course of IEI or several comorbidities, whereas, pain frequency and poor sleep quality were identified to be important clinical factors for anxiety. Because anxiety was related to negative illness perception, psychological therapy may apply to this group of patients
