The War of the Spanish Succession in the Catalan-speaking Lands
The War of the Spanish Succession affected the entire continent of Europe directly or indirectly. Within the Spanish monarchy, most of the states in the Crown of Aragon sided with Archduke Charles of Austria (Charles III), while Crown of Castile lent its support to Duke Philip of Anjou (Philip V). After the Treaty of Utrecht, Catalonia prolonged its resistance for 14 more months under a republican government. At the end of the war, the victors imposed repression, exile and the end to the Catalan constitutions

In 1716 was published in Milan a text which expresses both the historical and political
reasons of Charles III of Austria in theWar of the Spanish Succession (1702-1715). It is an extensive
text of 72 pages that was written by a Castilian clergyman who defended Barcelona during
the last siege and consequently was exiled to Italy by the new Bourbon authority. This article
studies some of the main points of the text, for example: the refusal of the Bourbon tyrannical
dynasty and the arguments for a fair monarchy; the meaning of the ascend to the throne by
Philip V of Spain that would disrupt the balance of power in Europe and cause the climax of
the decay of Spain; the reporting of the betrayal of the allied countries; the vindication of the
Castilian Austriacism and the cristicism against Bourbon support by certain Catalan sectors and
last but not least the description of the repression and exile
The analysis of a political work published in exile in Milan by 1716 permits some observations on the political thought of Castilian Austracism, a little known (and misrepresented) aspect of the War of the Spanish Succesion. Its main features were: the defence of monarchical rule as moderated by laws, institutions and estates (in contrast to the tyrannical power embodied by the Bourbons); the intervention of communities, convened in assemblies, in proclaiming the new king in cases of an uncertain succession; the view of Philip V’s accesssion as the culminating moment of Spanish decline; and a justification of opposition to the new dynasty as a defense of the freedom of the fatherland. These principles, that can be seen in the editorial output during the war, bear a significant resemblance to the discourse generated in France, a few decades earlier, by the opposition to Richelieu and Mazarin, that some historians have qualified as a first or embryonic form of political liberalism
