Dynamic Prediction of ICU Mortality Risk Using Domain Adaptation

Early recognition of risky trajectories during an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) stay is one of the key steps towards improving patient survival. Learning trajectories from physiological signals continuously measured during an ICU stay requires learning time-series features that are robust and discriminative across diverse patient populations. Patients within different ICU populations (referred here as domains) vary by age, conditions and interventions. Thus, mortality prediction models using patient data from a particular ICU population may perform suboptimally in other populations because the features used to train such models have different distributions across the groups. In this paper, we explore domain adaptation strategies in order to learn mortality prediction models that extract and transfer complex temporal features from multivariate time-series ICU data. Features are extracted in a way that the state of the patient in a certain time depends on the previous state. This enables dynamic predictions and creates a mortality risk space that describes the risk of a patient at a particular time. Experiments based on cross-ICU populations reveals that our model outperforms all considered baselines. Gains in terms of AUC range from 4% to 8% for early predictions when compared with a recent state-of-the-art representative for ICU mortality prediction. In particular, models for the Cardiac ICU population achieve AUC numbers as high as 0.88, showing excellent clinical utility for early mortality prediction. Finally, we present an explanation of factors contributing to the possible ICU outcomes, so that our models can be used to complement clinical reasoning

On the footprints of a major Brazilian Amazon earthquake

Combining historical accounts and seismological studies, three hundred years of dormant information emerged as a source of the largest known seismic event that rocked Brazil since the beginning of our colonization. The probable epicenter location of the 1690 tremor lies on the left bank of the Amazon River, about 45 km downstream from the modern day Manaus. A year later, while passing this area, a missionary met witnesses of the tremor and observed remarkable changes in the topography and vegetation along the margin of the river. By 1692 another priest confirmed this event and the occurrence of large waves in the river, which led to the flooding of the Native Indians' terrains. The tremor spread seismic waves throughout the forest and shook indigenous constructions as far as one thousand kilometers away. A calculation of the seismic parameters shows an estimated magnitude of 7, a maximum intensity of IX MM and a felt area of about 2 million km2. Due to the long recurrence period for this type of tremor, the discovery of one of these events is valuable for seismic global intraplate studies. As for Brazil, it unravels the myth that the country was never hit by severe earthquakes

In this article an evaluation of a method for extracting restricted lexical combinations from parallel corpora by detecting non-compositionality of multiword expressions in translation will be presented. This method presupposes that by finding sequences of words whose translation does not follow a simple word-to-word conversion of the component words, a collocation is probably present. Word bigrams are used. Criminal investigation by pursuing as an end the fulfilment of justice, constitutes a fundamental pillar of security of a democratic society whose premise is to live in a social order that guarantees the full enforcement of the rights and freedoms of its citizens. In this context it was defined as study object the current positioning and contribution of the Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) within the scope of the Portuguese Criminal Investigation System, seeking to identify measures that may be adopted to improve its participation in that system. In the development of this essay, an inductive reasoning and a qualitative research strategy was used, and the research design chosen was the case study. Natural mineral waters (still), effervescent natural mineral waters (sparkling) and aromatized waters with fruit-flavors (still or sparkling) are an emerging market. In this work, the capability of a potentiometric electronic tongue, comprised with lipid polymeric membranes, to quantitatively estimate routinely quality physicochemical parameters (pH and conductivity) as well as to qualitatively classify water samples according to the type of water was evaluated. The study showed that a linear discriminant model, based on 21 sensors selected by the simulated annealing algorithm, could correctly classify 100 % of the water samples (leave-one out cross-validation). This potential was further demonstrated by applying a repeated K-fold cross-validation (guaranteeing that at least 15 % of independent samples were only used for internal-validation) for which 96 % of correct classifications were attained. The satisfactory recognition performance of the E-tongue could be attributed to the pH, conductivity, sugars and organic acids contents of the studied waters, which turned out in significant differences of sweetness perception indexes and total acid flavor. Moreover, the E-tongue combined with multivariate linear regression models, based on sub-sets of sensors selected by the simulated annealing algorithm, could accurately estimate waters pH (25 sensors: R 2 equal to 0.99 and 0.97 for leave-one-out or repeated K-folds cross-validation) and conductivity (23 sensors: R 2 equal to 0.997 and 0.99 for leave-one-out or repeated K-folds cross-validation). So, the overall satisfactory results achieved, allow envisaging a potential future application of electronic tongue devices for bottled water analysis and classification. This study was supported by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) and the European Community fund FEDER, under the Program PT2020 (Project UID/EQU/50020/2013) and under the strategic funding of UID/BIO/04469/2013 unit

ABSTRACT: Competitiveness in many companies depends on the update and revision of many internal processes that may not be efficient enough. Besides not adding value for the customers, they are the cause of much inefficiency that only contributes to a worst outcome. The introduction of information systems highlights some of those inefficiencies, aiding the simplification and coherence regarding those processes. The order processing, the central cause of the customer service level, is one of the areas that might be greatly enhanced. It is intended the fulfilment of delivery deadlines without any additional costs regarding back-orders. This work focuses in expediting, looking to contribute for better order processing results. The main goal is to identify where and how information systems insertion in order processing may provide faster order processing from an information flow point of view. This is the core issue regarding expediting processes enhancemen
