Abstract ∙ Diet of post‐breeding Kelp Gulls (Larus dominicanus) in Nahuel Huapi Lake, Patagonia Argentina The Kelp Gull (Larus dominicanus) is a generalist species undergoing a process of range expansion and population increase in Patagonia. The ability of utilizing anthropogenic waste is one of the factors that might have enabled this expansion into freshwater environments. Colonization of new environments could affect directly or indirectly other species, throughout predation, competence or kleptoparasitism. In this sense, it is necessary to understand the diet of the recent populations settled in continental freshwater environments. The current study provides information about the post‐breeding diet in a freshwater environment in Patagonia. We collected 75 regurgitated pellets in De La Guardia Islands during the post‐breeding period between January and February 2010 in Nahuel Huapi Lake, Neuquén province, Argentina. Organic human refuse was the most frequent item (58.6%), followed by insects (33.3%) and crustaceans (17.3%). Insects (48.9%) and human refuse (24.7%) were the most important prey items in terms of abundance. Pellets were mainly cast by adults (mean number of adults = 77.1 per visit, SD = 40.6, range = 43–155), which were much more abundant than sub‐adults (mean = 6.3 per visit, SD = 3.6, range = 3–15) or juveniles (mean = 3, SD = 2.8, range = 1–9). Human refuse importance in the diet of the Kelp Gull was as important during post‐breeding as during breeding season. This is the first report of the post‐breeding diet composition of the Kelp Gull in a continental freshwater environment

Kinetic models were developed to describe the esterification reaction of lauric acid and ethanol over heterogeneous catalysts, which is a reaction of special interest in the biodiesel production. Vanadium Keggin heteropolyacid was included on a silica framework by sol–gel procedure, using different loadings. The synthesized materials were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, SEM, nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms, and potentiometric titration, and tested as solid catalysts in the esterification of lauric acid. Best performance was achieved with SiO2@20PMoV, which was used in the esterification of others fatty acid and alcohols. The reuse was successfully tested in five consecutive runs. Kinetic data using SiO2@20PMoV were obtained at different temperatures (48–78 °C), fatty acid:alcohol molar ratios (4 mmol of lauric acid and 2.5, 5, 10 and 15 mL of ethanol), and catalyst amounts (12.5, 25 and 50 mg). The best heterogeneous models were LH3 (surface reaction as rate-limiting step) and ER3 (desorption of ethyl laurate as rate-limiting step when the adsorbed reactant is lauric acid). The activation energies were 56.1 kJ mol−1 and 64.8 kJ mol−1, and the reaction rate constants at 78 °C were 0.2791 mol g−1 h−1 and 0.0768 mol g−1 h−1 for LH3 and ER3, respectively.Fil: Gallego Villada, Luis A.. Tracking data and retrospective analyses of diet reveal the consequences of loss of marine subsidies for an obligate scavenger, the andean condor

Over the last century, marine mammals have been dramatically reduced in the world’s oceans. We examined evidence that this change caused dietary and foraging pattern shifts of the Andean condor (Vultur gryphus) in Patagonia. We hypothesized that, after the decrease in marine mammals and the increase in human use of coastlines, condor diet changed to a more terrestrial diet, which in turn influenced their foraging patterns. We evaluated the diet by means of stable isotope analysis (δ13C, δ15N and δ34S) of current (last decade) and historical (1841–1933) feathers. We further evaluated the movement patterns of 23 condors using satellite tracking of individuals. Condors reduced their use of marine-derived prey in recent compared with historical times from 33+13% to less than 8+3% respectively; however, they still breed close to the coast. The average distance between the coast and nests was 62.5 km, but some nests were located close to the sea (less than 5 km). Therefore, some birds must travel up to 86 km from nesting sites, crossing over the mountain range to find food. The worldwide reduction in marine mammal carcasses, especially whales, may have major consequences on the foraging ecology of scavengers, as well as on the flux of marine inputs within terrestrial ecosystems.Fil: Lambertucci, Sergio Agustin. Blood gases, biochemistry and haematology of Galápagos hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata)

The hawksbill turtle, Eretmochelys imbricata, is a marine chelonian with a circum-global distribution, but the species is critically endangered and has nearly vanished from the eastern Pacific. Although reference blood parameter intervals have been published for many chelonian species and populations, including nesting Atlantic hawksbills, no such baseline biochemical and blood gas values have been reported for wild Pacific hawksbill turtles. Blood samples were drawn from eight hawksbill turtles captured in near shore foraging locations within the Galápagos archipelago over a period of four sequential years; three of these turtles were recaptured and sampled on multiple occasions. Of the eight sea turtles sampled, five were immature and of unknown sex, and the other three were females. A portable blood analyzer was used to obtain near immediate field results for a suite of blood gas and chemistry parameters. Values affected by temperature were corrected in two ways: (i) with standard formulas and (ii) with auto-corrections made by the portable analyzer. A bench top blood chemistry analyzer was used to measure a series of biochemistry parameters from plasma. Standard laboratory haematology techniques were employed for red and white blood cell counts and to determine haematocrit manually, which was compared to the haematocrit values generated by the portable analyzer. The values reported in this study provide reference data that may be useful in comparisons among populations and in detecting changes in health status among Galápagos sea turtles. The findings might also be helpful in future efforts to demonstrate associations between specific biochemical parameters and disease or environmental disasters

We find that host immune cells release ATP as an inflammatory signal in response to allogeneic transplantation. ATP then acts via a feedback mechanism on the P2X7 channel to activate the NLRP3 inflammasome and subsequently process and release interleukin (IL)-18. This process is a necessary stage in the deleterious Th1 response against allotransplantation via interferon-g production. Lack of IL-18 resulted in a decrease in graft- infiltrated CD8 cells, but an increase in regulatory T cells. In human liver transplant patients subjected to progressive immunosuppressive drug withdrawal, we found that patients suffering acute rejection had higher levels of the P2X7 receptor in circulating inflammatory monocytes compared to tolerant patients. These data suggest that the pharmacological inhibition of the P2X7 receptor or the NLRP3 inflammasome will aid in inducing transplant tolerance without complete immunoparalysis
