    Chemical pavement modifications to reduce ice adhesion

    The formation of ice and snow on road pavement surfaces is a recurring problem, creating hazardous driving conditions, restricting public mobility as well as having adverse economic effects. It would be desirable to develop new and improved ways of modifying the pavement surface, to prevent or at least delay the build-up of ice and to weaken the pavement–ice bond, and making the ice which forms easier to remove. This development could lead to economic, environmental and safety benefits for winter service providers and road users. This paper describes how environmental scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the mechanism by which de-icing chemicals, added as a filler replacement to bituminous materials, can be transferred to the pavement surface. The paper assesses the potential for chemical modifications to reduce the adhesion between ice and the pavement surface by means of work of adhesion calculations, based on surface energy parameters and a new physical ice bond test. The paper also examines the influence that the chemical modifications have on the durability of the pavement surface course

    The Prostate Care Questionnaire for Patients (PCQ-P): Reliability, validity and acceptability

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In England, prostate cancer patients report worse experience of care than patients with other cancers. However, no standard measure of patient experience of prostate cancer care is currently available. This paper describes an evaluation of the reliability, validity and acceptability of the PCQ-P, a newly developed instrument designed to measure patient experience of prostate cancer care.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The reliability, acceptability and validity of the PCQ-P were tested through a postal survey and interviews with patients. The PCQ-P was posted to 1087 prostate cancer patients varying in age, occupation, and overall health status, sampled from five hospitals in England. Nonresponders received one reminder. To assess criterion validity, 935 patients were also sent sections of the National Centre for Social Research Shortened Questionnaire; and to assess test-retest reliability, 296 patients who responded to the questionnaire were resent it a second time three weeks later. A subsample of 20 prostate cancer patients from one hospital took part in qualitative interviews to assess validity and acceptability of the PCQ-P. Acceptability to service providers was evaluated based on four hospitals' experiences of running a survey using the PCQ-P.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Questionnaires were returned by 865 patients (69.2%). Missing data was low across the sections, with the proportion of patients completing less than 50% of each section ranging from 4.5% to 6.9%. Across the sections of the questionnaire, internal consistency was moderate to high (Cronbach's alpha ranging from 0.63 to 0.80), and test-retest stability was acceptable (intraclass correlation coefficients ranging from 0.57 to 0.73). Findings on criterion validity were significant. Patient interviews indicated that the PCQ-P had high face validity and acceptability. Feedback from hospitals indicated that they found the questionnaire useful, and highlighted important considerations for its future use as part of quality improvement initiatives.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The PCQ-P has been found to be acceptable to patients and service providers, and is ready for use for the measurement of patient experience in routine practice, service improvement programmes, and research.</p

    Pollutants Increase Song Complexity and the Volume of the Brain Area HVC in a Songbird

    Environmental pollutants which alter endocrine function are now known to decrease vertebrate reproductive success. There is considerable evidence for endocrine disruption from aquatic ecosystems, but knowledge is lacking with regard to the interface between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Here, we show for the first time that birds foraging on invertebrates contaminated with environmental pollutants, show marked changes in both brain and behaviour. We found that male European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) exposed to environmentally relevant levels of synthetic and natural estrogen mimics developed longer and more complex songs compared to control males, a sexually selected trait important in attracting females for reproduction. Moreover, females preferred the song of males which had higher pollutant exposure, despite the fact that experimentally dosed males showed reduced immune function. We also show that the key brain area controlling male song complexity (HVC) is significantly enlarged in the contaminated birds. This is the first evidence that environmental pollutants not only affect, but paradoxically enhance a signal of male quality such as song. Our data suggest that female starlings would bias their choice towards exposed males, with possible consequences at the population level. As the starling is a migratory species, our results suggest that transglobal effects of pollutants on terrestrial vertebrate physiology and reproduction could occur in birds

    Cytoarchitectonic and chemoarchitectonic characterization of the prefrontal cortical areas in the mouse

    This study describes cytoarchitectonic criteria to define the prefrontal cortical areas in the mouse brain (C57BL/6 strain). Currently, well-illustrated mouse brain stereotaxic atlases are available, which, however, do not provide a description of the distinctive cytoarchitectonic characteristics of individual prefrontal areas. Such a description is of importance for stereological, neuronal tracing, and physiological, molecular and neuroimaging studies in which a precise parcellation of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) is required. The present study describes and illustrates: the medial prefrontal areas, i.e., the infralimbic, prelimbic, dorsal and ventral anterior cingulate and Fr2 area; areas of the lateral PFC, i.e., the dorsal agranular insular cortical areas and areas of the ventral PFC, i.e., the lateral, ventrolateral, ventral and medial orbital areas. Each cytoarchitectonically defined boundary is corroborated by one or more chemoarchitectonic stainings, i.e., acetylcholine esterase, SMI32, SMI311, dopamine, parvalbumin, calbindin and myelin staining

    Atmospheric electrification in dusty, reactive gases in the solar system and beyond

    Detailed observations of the solar system planets reveal a wide variety of local atmospheric conditions. Astronomical observations have revealed a variety of extrasolar planets none of which resembles any of the solar system planets in full. Instead, the most massive amongst the extrasolar planets, the gas giants, appear very similar to the class of (young) Brown Dwarfs which are amongst the oldest objects in the universe. Despite of this diversity, solar system planets, extrasolar planets and Brown Dwarfs have broadly similar global temperatures between 300K and 2500K. In consequence, clouds of different chemical species form in their atmospheres. While the details of these clouds differ, the fundamental physical processes are the same. Further to this, all these objects were observed to produce radio and X-ray emission. While both kinds of radiation are well studied on Earth and to a lesser extent on the solar system planets, the occurrence of emission that potentially originate from accelerated electrons on Brown Dwarfs, extrasolar planets and protoplanetary disks is not well understood yet. This paper offers an interdisciplinary view on electrification processes and their feedback on their hosting environment in meteorology, volcanology, planetology and research on extrasolar planets and planet formation

    Biochemical characterization of RAR1 cysteine- and histidine-rich domains (CHORDs): a novel class of zinc-dependent protein-protein interaction modules.

    Disease resistance in plants requires the activation of defense signaling pathways to prevent the spread of infection. The protein Required for Mla12 Resistance (RAR1) is a component of such pathways, which contains cysteine- and histidine-rich domains (CHORDs) that bind zinc. CHORDs are 60 amino acid domains, usually arranged in tandem, found in almost all eukaryotes, where they are involved in processes ranging from pressure sensing in the heart to maintenance of diploidy in fungi, and exhibit distinct protein-protein interaction specificity. In the case of RAR1, CHORD-I is known to interact with heat-shock protein 90 (HSP90) and CHORD-II is known to interact with the Suppressor of the G2 allele of Skp1 (SGT1). The focus of this work on RAR1 from barley and Arabidopsis was to address the paucity of biochemical information on RAR1 and its constituent CHORDs, particularly the role of the metal ion. Sedimentation experiments indicated RAR1 to be an extended monomer in solution with few intramolecular interactions. This was reinforced by denaturation experiments, where little difference between the stability of the individual domains and intact RAR1 could be detected by intrinsic tryptophan fluorescence. Electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry and atomic absorption showed that, contrary to previous reports, RAR1 binds five zinc ions; each CHORD binds two, and the plant-specific, 20 amino acid cysteine- and histidine-containing motif (CCCH motif) located between the two CHORDs binds the fifth. Fluorescence, ultraviolet circular dichroism (UV CD), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy further demonstrated that zinc ions are essential for maintaining CHORD structure. Finally, we used isothermal titratrion colarimetry to show that zinc is essential for the specific binding interactions of CHORD-II with SGT1. Our study provides the first biochemical and biophysical data on the zinc metalloprotein RAR1, defines its metal stoichiometry and that of its constituent CHORDs, and reveals that the metal ions are essential for structural integrity and specific protein-protein associations
