Os devastadores conflitos que acompanharam a desagregação dos estados multinacionais comunistas na década de 90 estiveram na base das muitas análises que traçaram um paralelo entre duas transições de ordens internacionais: a de 1919 e a de 1989-91. Em ambos os casos, a cultura política das elites envolvidas na criação de novos estados independentes haveria de revelar-se altamente nociva para a constituição de uma ordem política mais liberal no espaço dos antigos impérios. A grande diferença é que, pelo menos, a ordem de Versalhes possuía uma doutrina consistente para lidar com o desafio do nacionalismo étnico, a qual assumiu a forma de um regime internacional de protecção das minorias, garantido pela SDN. Daí, talvez, a tendência recente para a reabilitação do Acordo de Versalhes, depois de durante décadas este ter sido alvo de uma persistente difamação por parte da historiografia internacional

African 'loyalists' in the Portuguese armed forces and Angola's transition to independence

UID/HIS/04209/2013The article examines the trajectories of ‘loyal’ African troops in Angola before and after the demise of Portugal’s authoritarian regime in 1974. It starts by placing the ‘Africanisation’ drive of the Portuguese counterinsurgency campaign in a historical perspective; it then explores the rocky transition from colonial rule to independence in the territory between April 1974 and November 1975, describing the course of action taken by the Portuguese authorities vis-a-vis their former collaborators in the security forces. A concluding section draws a comparison between the fate of Portugal’s loyalists in Angola and the one experienced by similar groups in other ex-Portuguese colonies. The choice of Angola has the advantage of allowing us to look into a complex scenario in which the competition amongst rival nationalist groups, and a number of external factors, helped to produce a more ambiguous outcome for some of the empire’s local collaborators than what might have been otherwise expected.authorsversionpublishe

Danone : let’s rebrand DanUp : enhancing brand-consumer personality congruence

In light of profound changes shaping the Portuguese dairy market and Danone’s overall worsening performance, this Case Study assesses the visual rebranding strategy of DanUp and the impact of its new packaging design on the brand’s equity. Using extensive secondary data collected from Danone and an in-depth interview to one of the company’s brand managers, we first examine the yogurt industry’s growing competitive landscape and the key drivers affecting its structure. Next, we focus on DanUp’s new brand architecture, whose foundation rests on developing a brand personality congruent with target consumers’ so as to positively influence specific brand responses. An online survey based on Aaker’s (1997) personality framework was designed to test target consumers’ perceptions on the personality traits elicited by DanUp’s old and new packaging designs. Our findings suggest the new design effectively enhances DanUp’s brand-consumer personality congruence as it better communicates young adults’ characteristic exciting traits. Supporting this, brand likeability and willingness-to-pay were both found to be positively influenced by the new bottle design. Yet, secondary target personality traits were revealed to be negatively affected by the new packaging, which calls for the need of finding additional marketing variables capable of maximizing the brand’s personality congruence with target consumers’. Directions for future research are also suggested, namely an empirical test on the individual contribution of each brand element to DanUp’s enhanced ability in establishing exciting traits. For managers, since this was a real issue experienced by a renowned food multinational operating in a highly competitive market, this Case Study provides a valuable benchmark for their own rebranding decisions. For academics, it also shows how Aaker’s (1997) acclaimed framework can be used to measure the impact of a specific branding variable on a brand’s personality

BioVisualSpeech: Deployment of an Interactive Platform for Speech Therapy Sessions With Children

Sigmatism is a speech sound disorder (SSD) that prevents people from correctly pro- nouncing sibilant consonant sounds ([Z], [z], [S] and [s]). If left untreated, it can negatively impact children’s ability to communicate and socialize. Parents are advised to seek speech therapy for their kids whenever they are not reaching the milestones that are expected of their age, and while the exercises employed in speech therapy sessions are vital for the treatment of these disorders, they can also become repetitive. BioVisualSpeech is a research project that explores ways to provide biofeedback in speech therapy sessions through the usage of serious games. An example of this is the BioVisualSpeech Therapy Support Platform, an interactive tool that contains many types of games in one place, and which children can play in therapy sessions and at home by using the computer’s microphone to capture their voices. However, because the platform was developed in an academic context, it was important for us to adapt this system to the context of real life in collaboration with speech-language pathologists (SLPs). To achieve this, we set the goal of deploying the platform to SLPs’ computers. For that we first reengineered the system to turn it into an in-session focused application, instead of a system where children can practice with SLPs and at home. In addition, we also integrated Windows Speech Recognition into the platform, made the system easier to install and capable of collecting data from players, such as voice productions that could be used in the future to train better classification models, and other objective parameters concerning game performance. Our deployment with SLPs was accompanied by the questionnaires, documentation and data collection protocol needed to proceed with: firstly, the further validation of the platform along with two of its games and, secondly, the design of a user study focused on gathering voice productions from children. In the end, not only did we get promising results regarding the validation of the platform, but SLPs also got the opportunity to own a system that can continue to be used, and distributed by future researchers, even after the termination of this project.O sigmatismo é uma perturbação da fala que impede quem sofre deste de pronunciar corretamente as consoantes sibilantes ([Z], [z], [S] and [s]). Se deixado por tratar, este pode ter um impacto negativo na habilidade das crianças de comunicar e socializar. Pais destas crianças são aconselhados a procurar consultas de terapia da fala para os seus filhos, e enquanto que os exercícios utilizados durante as sessões de terapia da fala são vitais para o tratamento de perturbações, estes também correm o risco de se tornarem repetitivos. BioVisualSpeech é um projeto de investigação que explora formas de fornecer bio- feedback em sessões de terapia da fala através de jogos sérios. Um exemplo destes é a Plataforma de Apoio à Terapia da Fala da BioVisualSpeech, um sistema que contém vários tipos de jogos que as crianças podem jogar em sessões de terapia e em casa, utilizando para isso o microfone do computador para capturarem as suas vozes. Contudo, visto que a plataforma foi desenvolvida num contexto académico, era importante adaptá-la ao contexto do mundo real em colaboração com terapeutas da fala e da linguagem (TFLs). Assim, o objetivo desta dissertação foi implantar a plataforma para os computadores de TFLs. Para isso foi primeiro preciso mudar o foco da plataforma de modo a se tornar numa aplicação de apoio às sessões de terapia, exclusivamente. Para além disto, também se integrou o Sistema de Reconhecimento de Voz do Windows na plataforma, tornou-se o sistema mais fácil de instalar e capaz de recolher dados dos jogadores, como produções de voz que podem no futuro ser utilizadas para treinar melhores classificadores de fala, e outros parâmetros objetivos sobre os jogos. A implantação com TFLs foi acompanhada pelos questionários, documentação e protocolo necessários para proceder com: primeiro, a validação da plataforma e dois dos seus jogos e, segundo, o desenho de um estudo focado na recolha de produções de voz de crianças. No final, não só foram obtidos resultados promissores no que toca à validação da plataforma, mas os TFLs também tiveram a oportunidade de ficar com um sistema que pode continuar a ser utilizado mesmo depois deste projeto acabar

Que mudanças?: Cuba e sua relação com os EUA

O restabelecimento das relações diplomáticas entre Cuba e os EUA foi um dos mais importantes acontecimentos dos últimos anos no continente americano. Ao fim de mais de 50 anos de hostilidade assistimos à mais ambiciosa tentativa de normalizar as relações dos dois países. Depois de dois anos de avanços com uns EUA liderados por Barack Obama, a chegada de Donald Trump à presidência marca um regresso de uma política externa assente no confronto e hostilidade. Simultaneamente aos avanços e recuos na relação dos dois países, Cuba empreende o maior processo de transformação, económico e social, vivido na ilha desde o triunfo da sua revolução, em 1959, nomeadamente no que à propriedade e organização do emprego diz respeito, tal como ao papel do Estado na sociedade. Esta investigação propõe-se sistematizar, quer as mudanças na relação dos dois países, quer as transformações que têm ocorrido em Cuba nos últimos anos. Deste modo pretende-se compreender se houve uma mudança estrutural da relação dos EUA com Cuba e perceber de que modo ela pode influir, ou não, nas transformações que a maior ilha das Antilhas tem vivido nos últimos anos.The reestablishment of diplomatic relations between Cuba and the United States was one of the most important events of the last few years in the American continent. After more than 50 years of hostility the world witnessed the most ambitious attempt to normalize the relations between the two countries. After two years of positive progress with a US led by Barack Obama, the arrival of Donald Trump to the presidency marks a return of a foreign policy based on confrontation and hostility. At the same time as advances and setbacks occur between the two countries’ relationship, Cuba undertook the greatest process of economic and social transformation on the island since the triumph of its revolution in 1959, mainly regarding property the organization of employment and the role of the State in society. This research aims to systematize both the changes in the relationship of the two countries and the transformations occurred in Cuba in recent years. Hence it is intended to understand if there have been structural changes in the relations between the USA and Cuba and to perceive whether it can influence or not the transformations that the largest island of the Antilles has lived in the last few years or not

Employability in online higher education : a case study

This paper presents the results of a study on the perceptions of students and teachers from a distance education university on employability skills in higher education. The choice of skills that are important to the labour market has been the subject of controversy because it involves heterogeneous interests of different groups. Our case study departs from the following question: what are the perceptions of students and teachers about online higher education and the required skills for employability? To this end, a comparative study on the views of students and teachers was conducted, which emphasized the following dimensions: a) the most important skills for employability, and b) the skills to be developed for employability within undergraduate degrees in online learning. To collect the required data, a questionnaire was prepared and applied to students and teachers, taking as its main reference the theoretical model of Knight and Yorke (2006). In spite of the specificity of each group, the results reveal some similarities between students and teachers with regard to employability. The conclusions also highlight the need to promote research in this area in the European context

Conformidade da resistência à compressão de betões : um exemplo no Norte de Portugal

O incumprimento das regras especificadas e a consequente não conformidade dos betões em relação à normativa vigente, pode originar o aparecimento de anomalias e a degradação precoce das construções. Os objectivos deste estudo foram a caracterização de procedimentos adoptados para a produção de betão nalgumas obras no norte de Portugal, determinando a classe de resistência do betão produzido e comparando com a classe de resistência requerida no projecto. Neste contexto, calculámos a resistência à compressão do betão in situ e comparamos com a classe de resistência obtida nas obras em estudo. Foi verificado que a qualidade do betão in situ é superior à obtida com a recolha de provetes. Podemos dizer que quanto mais extensa, rápida e apertada é a inspecção, melhor conseguimos controlar e fazer correcções a tempo, com o objectivo de manter a qualidade do betão usado. É importante para uma adequada resposta, treinar e dar formação às pessoas envolvidas neste assunto

Educação para a saúde e prevenção de comportamentos Aditivos: Do diagnóstico (local) à intervenção (sociocomunitária).

A Prevenção de comportamentos aditivos e dependências (com ou sem substância psicoativa presente) assume particular importância no contexto da Educação para a Saúde, a qual configura uma série de ações de cariz pedagógico/informativo, visando o aumento de conhecimentos e reforço de competências dos seus destinatários, no sentido da adoção de estilos de vida saudáveis. Neste contexto de intervenção, assiste-se localmente ao desenvolvimento de projetos de cariz sociocomunitário, dirigidos aos indivíduos e comunidades de um dado território, de complexidade crescente em matéria do seu planeamento, implementação e avaliação. A intervenção produzida localmente assenta regularmente no estabelecimento de parcerias, entendidas como uma aliança de vontades individuais e organizativas à volta da necessidade de coordenar as atuações de cada parceiro, procurando o incremento da qualidade da ação conjunta e a otimização dos recursos disponíveis, numa lógica de rede. As redes têm, assim, um papel vital nas políticas de educação e saúde modernas ao permitir que autores de políticas, investigadores e comunidades consigam reunir, a diversos níveis, recursos para alcançar objetivos de saúde e de desenvolvimento sustentável. Esta mobilização social deve ser comunitária, envolvendo por isso as instituições locais, conhecedoras do território onde operam. Desta forma, a dinâmica participativa estabelecida entre os diferentes níveis de organização social (serviços da Administração Central, Municípios, associações locais, investigadores...) produzirá efeitos diretos e ampliará o alcance da ação, em particular se estiver presente desde a fase de diagnóstico, através do qual se procede à identificação das necessidades concretas que caracterizam a realidade social que se pretende alterar.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
