Article Patellar aneurysmal bone cyst in children: A case report
An aneurysmal bone cyst is rare in the patella. We report the case of a 9 year-old boy who presented with chronic pain and no previous traumahistory. Treatment included curettage of the cyst and filling with a iliac bone graft. Ten months after surgery, the knee was mobile and painlessand graft incorporation was good.Key words: Patellar, aneurysm, cyst, bone, childre
Aneurysmal bone cyst primary - about eight pediatric cases: radiological aspects and review of the literature
The aneurysmal bone cyst is a pseudotumoral lesion that can take several aspects. This is a rare lesion representing 1% of bone tumors. It appears usually during the first 30 years of life. The pathogenesis is that of a process of "dysplasia/hyperplasia", favored by a circulatory deficiency and hemorrhage within the lesion and the phenomena of osteoclasis. The objective of this work is to illustrate with analysis, the specific forms and atypical aneurysmal bone cyst which often pose a diagnostic challenge requiring radiological investigation with histological confirmation. We report eight pediatric cases of aneurysmal cysts collected over a period of 3 years, 3 boys and 5 girls. All patients had standard radiographs. MRI was performed in three patients. The diagnosis was confirmed histologically. The atypia has been in the seat: fibula (1 case), metaphyseal (2 cases), diaphyseal (4 cases) and metatarsal (1 case). Aneurysmal bone cyst is a rare benign tumor with predilection to the metaphysis of long bones. Atypical forms even fewer are dominated by the atypical seat.Key words: Bone cyst, aneurysm, osteolytic lesio
Outcomes of Cardiothoracic Surgery in Women With Turner Syndrome
BACKGROUND: To describe short- and mid-term surgical outcomes of patients with Turner syndrome (TS) after cardiovascular interventions.
METHODS: All individuals \u3e12 years of age at the time of surgical repair for cardiovascular disease (valve or coarctation repairs, aortic disease, aortic dissection) from 2002 to 2022 were eligible. The primary endpoint was complications or death within 30 days of intervention. Secondary outcomes included late complications and reinterventions within six months. Combined data from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and the Turner Syndrome Society of the United States were included in the analysis.
RESULTS: We identified 22 patients who met the inclusion criterion. The median age was 46 years (range, 21-75 years), with 86% having estrogen replacement therapy. The most common medical condition was hypertension (77%), followed by hypothyroidism (59%). The most frequent indication for surgery was aortic root or ascending aortic aneurysms (68%), followed by symptomatic aortic stenosis in patients with bicuspid aortic valve (64%), coarctation of aorta (45%), and acute aortic dissection (18%). Respiratory complications were the most common (68%). Pleural effusions were the most frequent found sign on imaging studies (68%). Thoracentesis, or chest tube placement, was required in 33% (5/15). Respiratory failure requiring specific support with high flow oxygen and/or thoracentesis occurred in 36% (8/22).
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with TS may be at an increased risk for postoperative complications after aortic surgery. Bicuspid aortic valve (59%) and coarctation of the aorta (45%) were the most common congenital malformations among our study group. Our study showed that respiratory complications were the most common, with pleural effusions being the most common post-surgery complication
Evaluation of sex differences in health-related quality of life outcomes associated with child abuse: Results from the Ontario Child Health Study
Aims. Despite the advances in child maltreatment research, there is still the need for comprehensive information about how abuse affects a broad range of categories of young adult functioning, and the extent to which these vary by sex. We examined the associations between child physical abuse (PA) and sexual abuse (SA) and six areas of functioning (mental health, physical health, life satisfaction, illegal substance use, alcohol problems and daily smoking). Methods. Data were obtained from the 1983 Ontario Child Health Study and follow-up in 2000/2001 (nĂ =Ă 1893). Multilevel regression estimated the adjusted associations for PA (with severity) and SA with each of the outcomes. Estimates with an entire sample were presented with sex-by-abuse interactions to examine sex differences and then presented separately by sex. Results. In the adjusted model, severe PA and SA were associated with impairment in mental health, and both forms of PA (severe and non-severe) and SA were associated with low life satisfaction. In addition, severe PA was associated with illegal substance use. Child abuse variables were not associated with poor physical health, alcohol problems or smoking. Although sex-stratified analyses revealed different patterns, there was no significant sex difference in the integrated sample. Conclusions. This is among the first community-based studies to show a strong association between child PA and SA and low life satisfaction in young adults. The abuse effects were similar for both sexes
Feasibility and systems definition study for Microwave Multi-Application Payload (MMAP)
Work completed on three Shuttle/Spacelab experiments is examined: the Adaptive Multibeam Phased Array Antenna (AMPA) Experiment, Electromagnetic Environment Experiment (EEE) and Millimeter Wave Communications Experiment (MWCE). Results included the definition of operating modes, sequence of operation, radii of operation about several ground stations, signal format, foot prints of typical orbits and preliminary definition of ground and user terminals. Conceptual hardware designs, Spacelab interfaces, data handling methods, experiment testing and verification studies were included. The MWCE-MOD I was defined conceptually for a steerable high gain antenna
Peristaltic Transport of a Physiological Fluid in an Asymmetric Porous Channel in the Presence of an External Magnetic Field
The paper deals with a theoretical investigation of the peristaltic transport
of a physiological fluid in a porous asymmetric channel under the action of a
magnetic field. The stream function, pressure gradient and axial velocity are
studied by using appropriate analytical and numerical techniques. Effects of
different physical parameters such as permeability, phase difference, wave
amplitude and magnetic parameter on the velocity, pumping characteristics,
streamline pattern and trapping are investigated with particular emphasis. The
computational results are presented in graphical form. The results are found to
be in perfect agreement with those of a previous study carried out for a
non-porous channel in the absence of a magnetic field
Palestinian children's experiences of drug abuse in the home in the Occupied Territories of Palestine: A scoping review of extant literature
The Occupied Territories of Palestine (OtP) consists of the non-contiguous West Bank including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip. Its dense population with political and economic tensions is affected by a rise in drug trafficking, abuse and addiction. A scoping review mapped what is known about Palestinian children's experiences of drug abuse in the home. Following application of exclusion measures, six records remained. Charting and analysis resulted in three themes; The consequences of being a child with a drug using parent; Causal factors of drug use in Palestinian families; and Prevalence rates of parental drug use are unknown. The review paints a concerning picture of stigma, family dysfunction, school drop-out, child and family isolation and maladaptive child development. Exposure to drugs, trauma and abuse contributes to strong potential for Palestinian child drug use, sexual exploitation, overdose, psychiatric illness, and infectious diseases acquisition. The review will inform the urgent strategic response
Relationship tensions and mood: Adult childrenâs daily experience of aging parentsâ stubbornness
This study examined middleâaged individualsâ reports of parentsâ behaviors commonly attributed to stubbornness. Middleâaged adults (Nâ=â192) completed a 7âday diary reporting their mood and how often they felt their parents (Nâ=â254) engaged in behaviors often described as âstubbornnessâ (insistent or risky). Thirtyâone percent of middleâaged children reported insistent behaviors, and 17% reported risky behaviors by their parent(s). Daily reports of parent behaviors attributed to stubbornness were positively associated with parentâchild relationship quality, parent functional limitations, and child neuroticism. Reports of perceived parent insistent behaviors were also associated with greater daily negative mood among adult children. Findings highlight the impact of adult childrenâs daily perceptions of parent behaviors commonly attributed to stubbornness on the individual and relationship.Peer Reviewedhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/142899/1/pere12229_am.pdfhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/142899/2/pere12229.pd
Quality assurance and assessment frameworks of biosystems engineering studies
Regulatory instruments at the national level to ensure high quality are crucial to
achieve and maintain a regional hub of higher education in Malta. While The Malta
Qualifications Council and the National Commission for Higher Education are
established and operational, the legal framework to set up a quality assurance
agency and a quality assurance and licensing framework is in place, but the
legislations is still awaiting approval. The University of Malta has set up internal
quality assurance structures, The Programme Validation Committee monitors,
reviews and recommends programmes for approval by Senate, The formation of the
INSTITUTE OF EARTH SYSTEMS will facilitate the means through which a Bio
Systems Engineering course could be offered, Furthermore the recent establishment
of a Maltese Chamber of Agrologists could in theory eventually take up the role to
grant professional accreditation,peer-reviewe
