QUEER THEORY AND MONOCEROS: Private versus Public life

    Get PDF
Literature, in its artistic and fictional dimension, endues political and social roles remarkable and determinant for the reconstruction of cultural history, while representing the unfoldings of individual and collective issues. Queer theory, which appears as part of a broad theoretical umbrella that encompasses feminist theories and studies of gender and sexuality, on the basis of several fields of knowledge among which literary studies, is a valuable tool to deal with the social aspects developed and discussed in literary works, mainly those defined as focusing in queer themes. In this sense, queer literature gives visibility to subjects that are often taken as invisible by common sense, even nowadays, bringing to light questionings of sexual normalcy. Therefore, this work aims at analyzing the roles of two gay couples (Max/Walter and Patrick/Ginger) characters in the Canadian novel Monoceros (2011), by Suzette Mayr. We start our study with a discussion of queer theory developed by several fundamental authors, such as Louro, Butler, Miskolci and others, in order to subvert the social comprehension generally offered of narratives and/or societies that try to deny sexual diversity, with effects on the practical life of characters/homoaffective people, in this case, in Monoceros. Thus, we seek to engage with visions of literature and theory that challenge essentialist and binary views on sexuality, trying to discuss reasons for the narrative to create a young suicidal gay teenager. Relations between the oppressive society and its victims are discussed in the analysis of the narrative in focus. Finally, this work is developed through a bibliographical research, building bridges among literature, criticism and contemporary theories.

The Milky Way disk radial gradient from planetary nebulae reveled by Gaia

Radial abundance gradients in the Galactic disc are one of the most important observational constraints to study the chemical evolution of the Milky Way galaxy and also other galaxies in the universe. The radial gradient is the result of many physical processes that occur since the formation of the Galaxy, as e.g. the infalling gas to form the disc, the star formation history, radial gas flows and the radial migration of stars. Planetary nebulae (PNe) are the offspring of low and intermediate-mass stars consisting of an expanding, glowing shell of ionised gas ejected from red giant stars late in their lives. They have very intense optical emission lines and some elements observed in PNe are not modified during the progenitor star evolution, making then important tools to probe the Galactic chemical evolution. However, PNe distances are subject of great uncertainties, since, unlike main sequence stars, these objects do not have a physical parameter that is direct dependent of the distance. In this work, we have used Gaia DR3 database in order to derive reliable distances for a sample of 294 Galactic PNe. The radial gradient from the O, S, Ar and Ne are computed using the new distances in the radial range from 3 to 15 kpc. The results are consistent with a flatter gradient than previously found and with a change of the slope around 8 kpc, which coincides with the Milky Way corotation radius

Spin Orbit Effects in the Electronic Transport Properties of Adsorbed Graphene Nanoribbons

Graphene has received great attention due to its exceptional properties, which include corners with zero effective mass, extremely large mobilities, this could render it the new template for the next generation of electronic devices. Furthermore it has weak spin orbit interaction because of the low atomic number of carbon atom in turn results in long spin coherence lengths. Therefore, graphene is also a promising material for future applications in spintronic devices - the use of electronic spin degrees of freedom instead of the electron charge. Graphene can be engineered to form a number of different structures. In particular, by appropriately cutting it one can obtain 1-D system -with only a few nanometers in width - known as graphene nanoribbon, which strongly owe their properties to the width of the ribbons and to the atomic structure along the edges. Those GNR-based systems have been shown to have great potential applications specially as connectors for integrated circuits. Impurities and defects might play an important role to the coherence of these systems. In particular, the presence of transition metal atoms can lead to significant spin-flip processes of conduction electrons. Understanding this effect is of utmost importance for spintronics applied design. In this work, we focus on electronic transport properties of armchair graphene nanoribbons with adsorbed transition metal atoms as impurities and taking into account the spin-orbit effect. Our calculations were performed using a combination of density functional theory and non-equilibrium Greens functions. Also, employing a recursive method we consider a large number of impurities randomly distributed along the nanoribbon in order to infer, for different concentrations of defects, the spin-coherence length

The characteristic traits of those who are complying to the rigor of the Law, with the teaching of Afro-Brazilian and / or African History and Culture in Higher Education Institutions in São Luís do Maranhão; We analyze the advances, the repercussion and the acceptance of the implementation of this theme, and how the Physical Education teachers are using this knowledge. The research used as subjects the teachers and students of 2 (two) academic establishments in São Luís / MA., where it was perceived, for the moment, a weakness in the application of the theme by the masters, in particular the insertion in the scope of their curricula. Although, in a way, they favor the access of people of African descent in higher education through Federal Government programs. With the exception, only Estácio de São Luís College, which created a discipline called “Afrodescendent Body Practices” in the Physical Education Course, but which only worked from 2011 to 2014. It is worth mentioning a more recent initiative of the Federal University of Maranhão (2016), which inaugurated the Physical Education and Ethnic-Racial Diversity Course in the Physical Education Degree Course. Regarding the methodological procedures, the present research made use of the quantitative and qualitative method and document analysis. The data were analyzed based on some dissertations on the subject and on the productions of specialists in the field of educational policies, such as Gomes (2001), Munanga (2003), and Weisskopf (2004), Mainardes (2011), among others. Regarding the results, it was found that the faculty of the institutions examined still need to change their pedagogical project, as well as restructure their curricula in accordance with the terms prescribed in legislation Nº. 9.394 / 96 and other related sets of rules in force

Dynamic Atomic Contributions To Infrared Intensities Of Fundamental Bands.

Dynamic atomic intensity contributions to fundamental infrared intensities are defined as the scalar products of dipole moment derivative vectors for atomic displacements and the total dipole derivative vector of the normal mode. Intensities of functional group vibrations of the fluorochloromethanes can be estimated within 6.5 km mol(-1) by displacing only the functional group atoms rather than all the atoms in the molecules. The asymmetric CF2 stretching intensity, calculated to be 126.5 km mol(-1) higher than the symmetric one, is accounted for by an 81.7 km mol(-1) difference owing to the carbon atom displacement and 40.6 km mol(-1) for both fluorine displacements. Within the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) model differences in atomic polarizations are found to be the most important for explaining the difference in these carbon dynamic intensity contributions. Carbon atom displacements almost completely account for the differences in the symmetric and asymmetric CCl2 stretching intensities of dichloromethane, 103.9 of the total calculated value of 105.2 km mol(-1). Contrary to that found for the CF2 vibrations intramolecular charge transfer provoked by the carbon atom displacement almost exclusively explains this difference. The very similar intensity values of the symmetric and asymmetric CH2 stretching intensities in CH2F2 arise from nearly equal carbon and hydrogen atom contributions for these vibrations. All atomic contributions to the intensities for these vibrations in CH2Cl2 are very small. Sums of dynamic contributions of the individual intensities for all vibrational modes of the molecule are shown to be equal to mass weighted atomic effective charges that can be determined from atomic polar tensors evaluated from experimental infrared intensities and frequencies. Dynamic contributions for individual intensities can also be determined solely from experimental data.1730378-3038
