A Typology Of Morphological Argument Focus Marking

    Get PDF
One of the methods that languages use to indicate which argument (if any) is in focus is morphological; however, there seems to be a major gap in the literature when it comes to understanding the variety and classification of morphological argument focus marking constructions. This thesis is an attempt to fill that gap. I present here both an overview of the types of morphological focus marking constructions found in the world\u27s languages, and a taxonomic classification of said constructions based on the grammaticalisation pathways that result in their genesis. Such constructions include not only the traditional `particle focus\u27 constructions, but also constructions involving clause-level morphology that signals the presence of argument focus. Additionally, this thesis provides a unified set of terms to refer to morphological focus marking constructions, in hopes of clearing up the terminological inconsistency that is currently an issue in discussions of morphological argument focus marking

English: The issue of this bachelor’s thesis is: «What do teachers emphasize in their efforts to promote reading development for students on the upper primary level», which should help to find answers to what teachers emphasize in the tuition for students with reading- and writing difficulties. To answer this, I performed a qualitative interview with three informants working at the same school. The thesis examines the results of the interview to relevant theory. In the assignments results and discussion part, it emerges that teachers emphasize early focus om basic strategies to expand vocabulary and to use reading as a tool for learning. Furthermore, it emerges that teachers have a broad perspective on adapted education, and adapts the level of assignments given in class to the various studentreconditions to secure the feeling of achievement for all students

The accretion-diffusion scenario for metals in cool white dwarfs

We calculated diffusion timescales for Ca, Mg, Fe in hydrogen atmosphere white dwarfs with temperatures between 5000 and 25000 K. With these timescales we determined accretion rates for a sample of 38 DAZ white dwarfs from the recent studies of Zuckerman et al. (2003) and Koester et al. (2005). Assuming that the accretion rates can be calculated with the Bondi-Hoyle formula for hydrodynamic accretion, we obtained estimates for the interstellar matter density around the accreting objects. These densities are in good agreement with new data about the warm, partially ionized phase of the ISM in the solar neighborhood.Comment: To be published in A&

A photoionization model of the compact HII region G29.96-0.02

We present a detailed photoionization model of G29.96-0.02 (hereafter G29.96), one of the brightest Galactic Ultra Compact HII (UCHII) regions in the Galaxy. This source has been observed extensively at radio and infrared wavelengths. The most recent data include a complete ISO (SWS and LWS) spectrum, which displays a remarkable richness in atomic fine-structure lines. The number of observables is twice as much as the number available in previous studies. In addition, most atomic species are now observed in two ionization stages. The radio and infrared data on G29.96 are best reproduced using a nebular model with two density components: a diffuse (n_e~680cm-3) extended (~1 pc) component surrounding a compact (~0.1 pc) dense (n_e~57000cm-3) core. The properties of the ionizing star were derived using state-of-the-art stellar atmosphere models. CoStar models yield an effective temperature of \~30^{+2}_{-1} kK whereas more recent non-LTE line blanketed atmospheres with stellar winds indicate somewhat higher values, Teff~32--38 kK. This range in Teff is compatible with all observational constraints, including near-infrared photometry and bolometric luminosity. The range 33-36 kK is also compatible with the spectral type O5-O8 determined by Watson and Hanson (97) when recent downward revisions of the effective temperature scale of O stars are taken into account. The age of the ionizing star of G29.96 is found to be a few 10^6 yr, much older than the expected lifetime of UCHII regions. Accurate gas phase abundances are derived with the most robust results being Ne/S=7.5 and N/O=0.43 (1.3 and 3.5 times the solar values, respectively).Comment: Accepted in Astronomy and Astrophysic

Interferometric multi-wavelength (sub)millimeter continuum study of the young high-mass protocluster IRAS05358+3543

The young massive star-forming region IRAS05358+3543 was observed at high-spatial resolution in the continuum emission at 3.1 and 1.2mm with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer, and at 875 and 438mum with the Submillimeter Array. We resolve at least four continuum sub-sources that are likely of protostellar nature. Two of them are potentially part of a proto-binary system with a projected separation of 1700AU. Additional (sub)mm continuum peaks are not necessarily harboring protostars but maybe caused by the multiple molecular outflows. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the sub-sources show several features. The main power house mm1, which is associated with CH3OH maser emission, a hypercompact HII region and a mid-infrared source, exhibits a typical SED with a free-free emission component at cm and long mm wavelengths and a cold dust component in the (sub)mm part of the spectrum (spectral index between 1.2mm and 438mum alpha~3.6). The free-free emission corresponds to a Lyman continuum flux of an embedded 13Msun B1 star. The coldest source of the region, mm3, has alpha~3.7 between 1.2mm and 875mum, but has lower than expected fluxes in the shorter wavelength 438mum band. This turnover of the Planck-function sets an upper limit on the dust temperature of mm3 of approximately 20K. The uv-data analysis of the density structure of individual sub-cores reveals distributions with power-law indices between 1.5 and 2. This resembles the density distributions of the larger-scale cluster-forming clump as well as those from typical low-mass cores.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted for Astronomy and Astrophysics, a high-resolution version of the paper is also available at http://www.mpia.de/homes/beuther/papers.htm

Rocky Planetesimals as the Origin of Metals in DZ Stars

{Abridged}. An analysis of the calcium and hydrogen abundances, Galactic positions and kinematics of 146 DZ stars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey demonstrates that interaction with the interstellar medium cannot account for their externally polluted atmospheres. The calcium-to-hydrogen ratios for the 37 DZA stars are dominated by super-solar values, as are the lower limits for the remaining 109 DZ stars. All together their metal-contaminated convective envelopes contain 10^{20+-2} g of calcium, commensurate with the masses of calcium inferred for large asteroids. It is probable that these stars are contaminated by circumstellar matter; the rocky remains of terrestrial planetary systems. In this picture, two predictions emerge: 1) at least 3.5% of all main sequence A- and F-type stars build terrestrial planets; and 2) the DZA stars are externally polluted by both metals and hydrogen, and hence constrain the frequency and mass of water-rich, extrasolar planetesimals.Comment: Accepted to MNRA

Multi-wavelength polarimetric study towards the open cluster NGC 1893

We present multi-wavelength linear polarimetric observations for 44 stars of the NGC 1893 young open cluster region along with V-band polarimetric observations of stars of other four open clusters located between l ~160 to ~175 degree. We found evidence for the presence of two dust layers located at a distance of ~170 pc and ~360 pc. The dust layers produce a polarization Pv ~2.2%. It is evident from the clusters studied in the present work that, in the Galactic longitude range l ~160 to 175 degree and within the Galactic plane (|b| < 2 degree), the polarization angles remain almost constant, with a mean ~163 degree and a dispersion of 6 degree. The small dispersion in polarization angle could be due to the presence of uniform dust layer beyond 1 kpc. Present observations reveal that in case of NGC 1893, the foreground two dust layers, in addition to the intracluster medium, seems to be responsible for the polarization effects. It is also found that towards the direction of NGC 1893, the dust layer that exists between 2-3 kpc has a negligible contribution towards the total observed polarization. The weighted mean for percentage of polarization (Pmax) and the wavelength at maximum polarization ({\lambda}max) are found to be 2.59 \pm 0.02% and 0.55 \pm 0.01 \mum respectively. The estimated mean value of {\lambda}max indicates that the average size of the dust grains within the cluster is similar to that in the general interstellar medium. The spatial variation of the polarization is found to decrease towards the outer region of the cluster. In the present work, we support the notion, as already has been shown in previous studies, that polarimetry, in combination with (U-B)/(B-V) colour-colour diagram, is a useful tool for identifying non-members in a cluster.Comment: 36 pages, 12 figures, 10 tables, accepted for the publication in MNRA
