    Formulae for the Analysis of the Flavor-Tagged Decay B^0_s --> Jpsi phi

    Differential rates in the decay B^0_s --> Jpsi phi, with phi --> K^+K^- and Jpsi --> mu^+ mu^- are sensitive to the CP-violation phase beta_s, predicted to be very small in the standard model. The analysis of B^0_s --> Jpsi phi decays is also suitable for measuring the B^0_s lifetime, the decay width difference DeltaGamma_s between the B^0_s mass eigenstates, and the B^0_s oscillation frequency Delta m even if appreciable CP violation does not occur. In this paper we present normalized probability densities useful in maximum likelihood fits, extended to allow for S-wave contributions on one hand and for the effects of direct CP violation on the other. Our treatment of the S-wave contributions includes the strong variation of the S-wave/P-wave amplitude ratio with m(K^+K^-) across the phi resonance, which was not considered in previous work. We include a scheme for re-normalizing the probability densities after detector sculpting of the angular distributions of the final state particles, and conclude with an examination of the symmetries of the rate formulae, with and without an S-wave contribution. All results are obtained with the use of a new compact formalism describing the differential decay rate of B^0_s mesons into Jpsi phi final states.Comment: 19 pages, no figures. Revised for JHE

    Higgs-mediated FCNCs: Natural Flavour Conservation vs. Minimal Flavour Violation

    We compare the effectiveness of two hypotheses, Natural Flavour Conservation (NFC) and Minimal Flavour Violation (MFV), in suppressing the strength of flavour-changing neutral-currents (FCNCs) in models with more than one Higgs doublet. We show that the MFV hypothesis, in its general formulation, is more stable in suppressing FCNCs than the hypothesis of NFC alone when quantum corrections are taken into account. The phenomenological implications of the two scenarios are discussed analysing meson-antimeson mixing observables and the rare decays B -> mu+ mu-. We demonstrate that, introducing flavour-blind CP phases, two-Higgs doublet models respecting the MFV hypothesis can accommodate a large CP-violating phase in Bs mixing, as hinted by CDF and D0 data and, without extra free parameters, soften significantly in a correlated manner the observed anomaly in the relation between epsilon_K and S_psi_K.Comment: 27 pages, 4 figures. v3: minor modifications (typos corrected and few refs. added), conclusions unchanged; journal versio

    A fourth generation, anomalous like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry and the LHC

    A fourth chiral generation, with mt′m_{t^\prime} in the range ∼(300−500)\sim (300 - 500) GeV and a moderate value of the CP-violating phase can explain the anomalous like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry observed recently by the D0 collaboration. The required parameters are found to be consistent with constraints from other BB and KK decays.     Neutral Gauge Boson Contributions to the Dimuon Charge Asymmetry in B Decays

    Recently, the D0 Collaboration measured the CP-violating like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry in neutral B decays, finding a 3.2sigma difference from the standard-model (SM) prediction. A non-SM charge asymmetry a_sl^s suggests a new-physics (NP) contribution to Bs-Bsbar mixing. In this case, in order to explain the measured value of a_sl^s within its 1sigma range, NP must be present in Gamma_12^s, the absorptive part of the mixing. In this paper, we examine whether such an explanation is possible in models with flavor-changing Z (ZFCNC) or Z' (Z'FCNC) gauge bosons. The models must also reproduce the measured values of the indirect CP asymmetry S_psi-phi in Bs -> J/psi phi, and Delta Gamma_s, the Bs-Bsbar width difference. We find that the ZFCNC model cannot reproduce the present measured values of S_psi-phi and a_sl^s within their 1sigma ranges. On the other hand, in the Z'FCNC model, the values of all three observables can be simultaneously reproduced.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, JHEP format.     New Physics in Bs -> J/psi phi: a General Analysis

    Recently, the CDF and D0 collaborations measured indirect CP violation in Bs -> J/psi phi and found a hint of a signal. If taken at face value, this can be interpreted as a nonzero phase of Bs-Bsbar mixing (beta_s), in disagreement with the standard model, which predicts that beta_s ~= 0. In this paper, we argue that this analysis may be incomplete. In particular, there can be new physics (NP) in the bbar -> sbar c cbar decay. If so, the value of beta_s is different than for the case in which NP is assumed to be present only in the mixing. We have examined several models of NP and found that, indeed, there can be significant contributions to the decay. These effects are consistent with measurements in B -> J/psi K* and Bd -> J/psi Ks. Due to the NP in the decay, polarization-dependent indirect CP asymmetries and triple-product asymmetries are predicted in Bs -> J/psi phi.Comment: 28 pages, JHEP, no figures.     Family history of colorectal cancer in Iran

    BACKGROUND: Previous reports show a high proportion of young CRC patients in Iran. In this study we aim to look for the clustering of colorectal cancer in families of a series of CRC patients from Iran. METHODS: The family history of cancer is traced in 449 CRC patients of which 112 were 45 yrs or younger and 337 were older than 45 yrs at time of diagnosis. The patients were admitted in two hospitals in Tehran, during a 4-year period. RESULTS: Clinical diagnosis of HNPCC was established in 21 (4.7%) probands. Family history of CRC was more frequently reported by early-onset than by late-onset patients (29.5% vs. 12.8%, p < 0.001). Distribution of tumor site differed significantly between those with and without family history of CRC. Right colon cancer was the most frequent site (23/45, 35.4%) observed in patients with positive family history of colorectal cancer. CONCLUSION: The relatively high frequency of CRC clustering along with HNPCC in our patients should be further confirmed with larger sample size population-based and genetic studies to establish a cost effective molecular screening for the future

    Measurement of the Top-Quark Mass in All-Hadronic Decays in p pbar Collisions at CDF II

    We present a measurement of the top-quark mass, MtopM_{\mathrm{top}}, in the all-hadronic decay channel ttˉ→W+bW−bˉ→q1qˉ2bq3qˉ4bˉt\bar{t} \to W^+b W^- \bar{b} \to q_1\bar{q}_2 b q_3 \bar{q}_4 \bar{b}. The analysis is performed using 310 pb−1^{-1} of s\sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV ppˉp\bar{p} collisions collected with the CDF II detector using a multi-jet trigger. The mass measurement is based on an event-by-event likelihood which depends on both the sample purity and the value of the top-quark mass, using 90 possible jet-to-parton assignments in the six-jet final state. The joint likelihood of 290 selected events yields a value of MtopM_{\mathrm{top}}=177.1 ±\pm 4.9 (stat.) ±\pm 4.7 (syst.) GeV/c2c^2.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures and 1 table, Submitted to Phys. Rev.     Measurement of Lifetime and Decay-Width Difference in B0s -> J/psi phi Decays

    We measure the mean lifetime, tau=2/(Gamma_L+Gamma_H), and the width difference, DeltaGamma=Gamma_L-Gamma_H, of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the B0s meson, B0sL and B0sH, in B0s -> J/psi phi decays using 1.7 fb^-1 of data collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron ppbar collider. Assuming CP conservation, a good approximation for the B0s system in the Standard Model, we obtain DeltaGamma = 0.076^+0.059_-0.063 (stat.) +- 0.006 (syst.) ps^-1 and tau = 1.52 +- 0.04 (stat.) +- 0.02 (syst.) ps, the most precise measurements to date.     Limits on Anomalous Triple Gauge Couplings in ppbar Collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV

    We present a search for anomalous triple gauge couplings (ATGC) in WW and WZ boson production. The boson pairs are produced in ppbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV, and the data sample corresponds to 350 pb-1 of integrated luminosity collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. In this search one W decays to leptons, and the other boson (W or Z) decays hadronically. Combining with a previously published CDF measurement of Wgamma boson production yields ATGC limits of -0.18 < lambda < 0.17 and -0.46 < Delta kappa < 0.39 at the 95% confidence level, using a cut-off scale Lambda=1.5 TeV.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures.
