    Random attractors for degenerate stochastic partial differential equations

    We prove the existence of random attractors for a large class of degenerate stochastic partial differential equations (SPDE) perturbed by joint additive Wiener noise and real, linear multiplicative Brownian noise, assuming only the standard assumptions of the variational approach to SPDE with compact embeddings in the associated Gelfand triple. This allows spatially much rougher noise than in known results. The approach is based on a construction of strictly stationary solutions to related strongly monotone SPDE. Applications include stochastic generalized porous media equations, stochastic generalized degenerate p-Laplace equations and stochastic reaction diffusion equations. For perturbed, degenerate p-Laplace equations we prove that the deterministic, infinite dimensional attractor collapses to a single random point if enough noise is added.Comment: 34 pages; The final publication is available at http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs10884-013-9294-

    An extensive structural model for supply chain quality management and firm performance

    Purpose: This study was carried out to create a research model investigating the impact of supply chain quality management (SCQM) practices on firm performance. Design/methodology/approach: Based on a comprehensive literature review, the practices were suggested. These SCQM practices will be analyzed and categorized into 4 dimensions: upstream (supplier assessment, supplier quality management), downstream sides of a supply chain (customer focus), internal process (product/service design, process management and logistics) and support practices (top management support, human resource management, information and supply chain integration). The measurement instrument of firm performance was developed including three aspects: operational performance, customer satisfaction and financial performance. Findings: A conceptual framework and a structural model were proposed as well as the development of hypotheses on the paths. Research limitations/implications: It is necessary to test the rationality of this model by empirical studies in different contexts. Originality/value: The research considers integration of quality and supply chain management still remains limited in the literature. Therefore, it is necessary to have a more focused approach in assessing quality management issues within the internal and external supply chain contexts. This study concentrates on the practices which improve quality aspects of supply chain, known as SCQM practices. Proposed structural model in this paper not only fills the voids in the literature but contributes a parsimonious conceptual framework for theory building in SCQM and firm performance. It also expects to offer a useful guidance for measuring and implementing SCQM practices as well as facilitate further studies in this field

    Measurement of the refractive index of electrically poled soda-lime glass layers using leaky modes

    Electrically poled layers have been formed in soda-lime glass using graphite electrodes in air. The refractive index and thickness of the poled glass layers have been measured by the analysis of leaky optical modes. These modes are supported by the poled layer and can be determined by analysis of the optical reflectivity measured with a prism coupler arrangement. A relatively constant refractive index ~ 1.486 in the poled glass region is measured, which is ~0.03 below the substrate index. The reflectivity data shows that the transition between poled and un-poled glass is very sharp and is consistent with ion transport models. The thickness of the poled glass region is consistent with the removal of Na+ and K+ ions from the poled region. The index and depth data is confirmed by interferometric measurements. The tensile stress in the poled glass layer is also estimated from optical birefringence measurements and is estimated to be ~0.3 GN/m2

    The role of quality management practices in operational performance: an empirical study in a transitional economy

    Purpose: This research was conducted to recognize quality management (QM) practices which have relationship with operational performance. Design/methodology/approach: Based on the extensive literature review, a set of quality management practices were identified and a conceptual model was built to explore their relationship with operational performance. An empirical testing at Vietnamese garment enterprises was carried out. Findings: The results of this research showed that four main practices including top management support, human resource management, reporting and analysis of quality data, product/service design and process management are directly and indirectly related to operational performance. In addition, 57.1% variance of operational performance was explained by the QM practices above mentioned. Research limitations/implications: Within the scope of this study, there are some aspects that haven’t been yet considered: (i) there are many other factors that might also have impact on operational performance which are not incorporated in this study, such as, external environment, capital, technology, equipment, information flow, oursourcing, etc., (ii) generalized ability of results would be higher if extending the sample scope to other industries and other countries. These imply directions for further research. Practical implications: To increase operational performance, the QM practices should be applied simultaneously and the structural model was used in this study could play as “a guideline” to orient for the implementation of these practices. Originality/value: This study tried to address some issues that have not been fully examined in the literature. Not only fill these voids, the research model presented the relationship among QM practices and operational performance, along with the measurement instrument validated in this study also provided some insights to the theory system of QM and operational performance. It is also a valuable contribution for the next empirical studies, especially for countries having the transitional economy as Vietnam

    Strangeness in the proton and N*(1535)

    The newest progress on the study of the strangeness in the proton and in the lowest negative parity nucleon excited state N(1535)N^*(1535) is reviewed. Implications on the internal quark structure of the proton, N(1535)N^*(1535) and other baryons are discussed. The diquark cluster picture for the 5-quark components in baryons gives a natural explanation not only to the empirical indications for a positive strangeness magnetic moment μs\mu_s and positive strangeness radius of the proton but also the longstanding mass-reverse problem of N(1535)N^*(1535), N(1440)N^*(1440) and Λ(1405)\Lambda^*(1405) resonances as well as the unusual decay pattern of the N(1535)N^*(1535) resonance. Evidence for possible existence of N(1535)N^*(1535)'s 1/2{1/2}^- SU(3) nonet partners in this picture is pointed out, and suggestion is made to search for these 1/21/2^- hyperon excited states under the well known Σ(1385)\Sigma^*(1385), Λ(1520)\Lambda^*(1520) and Ξ(1530)\Xi^*(1530) peaks in various reactions.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, Plenary talk at 18th International IUPAP Conference on Few-Body Problems in Physics August 21-26. 2006 Santos SP Brazil; to be published in Nuclear Physics

    Direct and indirect effects of risks on service-oriented supply chain: a covid-19 pandemic perspective

    Purpose - A solid service-oriented foundation is required to make supply chain management a competitive advantage, especially in this Covid-19 pandemic. A well-established service-oriented supply chain becomes more adaptable to changing client expectations. This study aims at analysing the direct and indirect impact of risks on the service-oriented supply chain from a pandemic perspective. Design/methodology/approach - The Q-sort method is applied with the participation of nine top-level managers to initially review the reliability, validity, and unidimensionality of research concepts. Then a questionnaire containing these measuring variables is developed to obtain the opinions of those who are experienced in logistics and supply chain management. These empirical data are analysed based on Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) to evaluate direct and indirect effects of risks on supply chain performance. Findings - The risk is inherent in service-oriented supply chains, affecting both direct and indirect performance. The proposed risk model explains 33.6 percent of Supplier performance, 46.4 percent of Operational performance, 47.1 percent of Customer satisfaction, and 46.5 percent of Finance variation. We found that service-oriented supply chains effectively monitor demand risk. External risk has the smallest impact on supply chain performance measures, whereas demand risk has the smallest effect. That a service-oriented supply chain is focused on meeting customer demand and managing demand-related risks is reinforced by these findings. Research limitations/implications - In the literature on supply chain risk management, resilience studies and disruption management receive less attention than studies on risk assessment and risk mitigation (Katsaliaki et al., 2021). Future supply chain risk management research should differentiate between risk-as an event and/or risk-as a process since they have different periodic effects on response management and resilience.     Solanum lycopersicon Mill. and Nicotiana benthamiana L. under high light show distinct responses to anti-oxidative stress

    Two experimentally important species, Solanum lycopersicon Mill. and Nicotiana benthamiana L., were propagated in vitro under low light (50 mmolm 2 s 1) and transferred to HL (200 mmolm 2 s 1) under a protocol previously developed for grapevine and chestnut. Compared with photooxidative stress parameters already tested in those species, imaging of hydrogen peroxide and superoxide revealed an accumulation on d2–3 and d6 in S. lycopersicon and d1–2 and d5–7 in N. benthamiana. SOD, CAT and APX activities matched ROS accumulation. The expression of the respective transcripts showed a significant increase on d1 in S. lycopersicon while in N. benthamiana a bimodal pattern was found, with peaks on d2 and d7. These results, together with the relative timing of root expansion and new leaf emergence, indicate that these two apparently similar species display different strategies when responding to light stress, evidencing further the uniqueness of the response of each species.     Symbolic powers of monomial ideals and Cohen-Macaulay vertex-weighted digraphs

    In this paper we study irreducible representations and symbolic Rees algebras of monomial ideals. Then we examine edge ideals associated to vertex-weighted oriented graphs. These are digraphs having no oriented cycles of length two with weights on the vertices. For a monomial ideal with no embedded primes we classify the normality of its symbolic Rees algebra in terms of its primary components. If the primary components of a monomial ideal are normal, we present a simple procedure to compute its symbolic Rees algebra using Hilbert bases, and give necessary and sufficient conditions for the equality between its ordinary and symbolic powers. We give an effective characterization of the Cohen--Macaulay vertex-weighted oriented forests. For edge ideals of transitive weighted oriented graphs we show that Alexander duality holds.
