Scale without Conformal Invariance at Three Loops
We carry out a three-loop computation that establishes the existence of scale
without conformal invariance in dimensional regularization with the MS scheme
in d=4-epsilon spacetime dimensions. We also comment on the effects of scheme
changes in theories with many couplings, as well as in theories that live on
non-conformal scale-invariant renormalization group trajectories. Stability
properties of such trajectories are analyzed, revealing both attractive and
repulsive directions in a specific example. We explain how our results are in
accord with those of Jack & Osborn on a c-theorem in d=4 (and d=4-epsilon)
dimensions. Finally, we point out that limit cycles with turning points are

Spatially Resolved Magnetic Field Structure in the Disk of a T Tauri Star
Magnetic fields in accretion disks play a dominant role during the star
formation process but have hitherto been observationally poorly constrained.
Field strengths have been inferred on T Tauri stars themselves and possibly in
the innermost part of the accretion disk, but the strength and morphology of
the field in the bulk of the disk have not been observed. Unresolved
measurements of polarized emission (arising from elongated dust grains aligned
perpendicular to the field) imply average fields aligned with the disks.
Theoretically, the fields are expected to be largely toroidal, poloidal, or a
mixture of the two, which imply different mechanisms for transporting angular
momentum in the disks of actively accreting young stars such as HL Tau. Here we
report resolved measurements of the polarized 1.25 mm continuum emission from
HL Tau's disk. The magnetic field on a scale of 80 AU is coincident with the
major axis (~210 AU diameter) of the disk. From this we conclude that the
magnetic field inside the disk at this scale cannot be dominated by a vertical
component, though a purely toroidal field does not fit the data well either.
The unexpected morphology suggests that the magnetic field's role for the
accretion of a T Tauri star is more complex than the current theoretical

A trapped field of 17.6 T in melt-processed, bulk Gd-Ba-Cu-O reinforced with shrink-fit steel
The ability of large grain, REBaCuO [(RE)BCO; RE =
rare earth] bulk superconductors to trap magnetic field is determined by their
critical current. With high trapped fields, however, bulk samples are subject
to a relatively large Lorentz force, and their performance is limited primarily
by their tensile strength. Consequently, sample reinforcement is the key to
performance improvement in these technologically important materials. In this
work, we report a trapped field of 17.6 T, the largest reported to date, in a
stack of two, silver-doped GdBCO superconducting bulk samples, each of diameter
25 mm, fabricated by top-seeded melt growth (TSMG) and reinforced with
shrink-fit stainless steel. This sample preparation technique has the advantage
of being relatively straightforward and inexpensive to implement and offers the
prospect of easy access to portable, high magnetic fields without any

Algebras, BPS States, and Strings
We clarify the role played by BPS states in the calculation of threshold
corrections of D=4, N=2 heterotic string compactifications. We evaluate these
corrections for some classes of compactifications and show that they are sums
of logarithmic functions over the positive roots of generalized Kac-Moody
algebras. Moreover, a certain limit of the formulae suggests a reformulation of
heterotic string in terms of a gauge theory based on hyperbolic algebras such
as . We define a generalized Kac-Moody Lie superalgebra associated to
the BPS states. Finally we discuss the relation of our results with string

The role of language skills in interactive social book search sessions
When searching for books, people frequently have to deal with content that is in a language different from their own. However, research on multilingual systems has generally focused on the user interface's language rather than the content language. In this paper, we describe and compare early results from the multilingual aspects in the Interactive Social Book Search (iSBS) task at CLEF 2014 and 2015. A preliminary analysis of usage patterns for native English and non-native English speakers indicates an influence of language skills on search behaviour during goal-oriented and casual leisure tasks. Vortex deformation and breaking in superconductors: A microscopic description
Vortex breaking has been traditionally studied for nonuniform critical
current densities, although it may also appear due to nonuniform pinning force
distributions. In this article we study the case of a
high-pinning/low-pinning/high-pinning layered structure. We have developed an
elastic model for describing the deformation of a vortex in these systems in
the presence of a uniform transport current density for any arbitrary
orientation of the transport current and the magnetic field. If is above a
certain critical value, , the vortex breaks and a finite effective
resistance appears. Our model can be applied to some experimental
configurations where vortex breaking naturally exists. This is the case for
YBaCuO (YBCO) low angle grain boundaries and films on vicinal
substrates, where the breaking is experienced by Abrikosov-Josephson vortices
(AJV) and Josephson string vortices (SV), respectively. With our model, we have
experimentally extracted some intrinsic parameters of the AJV and SV, such as
the line tension and compared it to existing predictions based on

Classical and quantum N=2 supersymmetric black holes
We use heterotic/type-II prepotentials to study quantum/classical black holes
with half the supersymmetries unbroken. We show that, in the case of
heterotic string compactifications, the perturbatively corrected entropy
formula is given by the tree-level entropy formula with the tree-level coupling
constant replaced by the perturbative coupling constant. In the case of type-II
compactifications, we display a new entropy/area formula associated with
axion-free black-hole solutions, which depends on the electric and magnetic
charges as well as on certain topological data of Calabi--Yau three-folds,
namely the intersection numbers, the second Chern class and the Euler number of
the three-fold. We show that, for both heterotic and type-II theories, there is
the possibility to relax the usual requirement of the non-vanishing of some of

Holography for Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theories from generalized dimensional reduction
We show that a class of Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton (EMD) theories are related
to higher dimensional AdS-Maxwell gravity via a dimensional reduction over
compact Einstein spaces combined with continuation in the dimension of the
compact space to non-integral values (`generalized dimensional reduction').
This relates (fairly complicated) black hole solutions of EMD theories to
simple black hole/brane solutions of AdS-Maxwell gravity and explains their
properties. The generalized dimensional reduction is used to infer the
holographic dictionary and the hydrodynamic behavior for this class of theories
from those of AdS. As a specific example, we analyze the case of a black brane
carrying a wave whose universal sector is described by gravity coupled to a
Maxwell field and two neutral scalars. At thermal equilibrium and finite
chemical potential the two operators dual to the bulk scalar fields acquire
expectation values characterizing the breaking of conformal and generalized
conformal invariance. We compute holographically the first order transport

A Mediterranean-like dietary pattern with vitamin D3 (10 µg/d) supplements reduced the rate of bone loss in older Europeans with osteoporosis at baseline: results of a 1-y randomized controlled trial
Background: The Mediterranean diet (MD) is widely recommended for the prevention of chronic disease, but evidence for a beneficial effect on bone health is lacking. Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of a Mediterranean-like dietary pattern [NU-AGE (New Dietary Strategies Addressing the Specific Needs of the Elderly Population for Healthy Aging in Europe)] on indexes of inflammation with a number of secondary endpoints, including bone mineral density (BMD) and biomarkers of bone and collagen degradation in a 1-y multicenter randomized controlled trial (RCT; NU-AGE) in elderly Europeans. Design: An RCT was undertaken across 5 European centers. Subjects in the intervention group consumed the NU-AGE diet for 1 y by receiving individually tailored dietary advice, coupled with supplies of foods including whole-grain pasta, olive oil, and a vitamin D3 supplement (10 µg/d). Participants in the control group were provided with leaflets on healthy eating available in their country. Results: A total of 1294 participants (mean ± SD age: 70.9 ±4.0 y; 44% male) were recruited to the study and 1142 completed the 1-y trial. The Mediterranean-like dietary pattern had no effect on BMD (site-specific or whole-body); the inclusion of compliance to the intervention in the statistical model did not change the findings. There was also no effect of the intervention on the urinary biomarkers free pyridinoline or free deoxypyridinoline. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D significantly increased and parathyroid hormone decreased (P < 0.001) in the MD compared with the control group. Subgroup analysis of individuals with osteoporosis at baseline (site-specific BMD T-score ≤ −2.5 SDs) showed that the MD attenuated the expected decline in femoral neck BMD (n = 24 and 30 in MD and control groups, respectively; P = 0.04) but had no effect on lumbar spine or whole-body BMD. Conclusions: A 1-y intervention of the Mediterranean-like diet together with vitamin D3 supplements (10 µg/d) had no effect on BMD in the normal age-related range, but it significantly reduced the rate of loss of bone at the femoral neck in individuals with osteoporosis.
