Don't Forget to Measure
This talk explores our lack of knowledge of the strange quark contribution to
the nucleon spin, . Data on from inclusive and
semi-inclusive polarized deep-inelastic scattering will be reviewed, followed
by a discussion of how the ongoing program of parity-violating elastic
electron-nucleon scattering experiments, that seek out the strange
electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon, need to have an estimate for the
strange axial form factor to carry out that program, and how the value of
extracted from the DIS experiments has filled that role. It is shown
that elastic , , and parity-violating data can
be combined to extract the strange electric, magnetic axial form factors
simultaneously. A proposed experiment that could address this important issue
if briefly previewed.Comment: 4 pages, to appear in proceedings in PAVI04, Eur. Jour. Phy
Relativistic nuclear structure effects in quasielastic neutrino scattering
Charged-current cross sections are calculated for quasielastic neutrino and
antineutrino scattering using a relativistic meson-nucleon model. We examine
how nuclear-structure effects, such as relativistic random-phase-approximation
(RPA) corrections and momentum-dependent nucleon self-energies, influence the
extraction of the axial form factor of the nucleon. RPA corrections are
important only at low-momentum transfers. In contrast, the momentum dependence
of the relativistic self-energies changes appreciably the value of the
axial-mass parameter, , extracted from dipole fits to the axial form
factor. Using Brookhaven's experimental neutrino spectrum we estimate the
sensitivity of M to various relativistic nuclear-structure effects.Comment: 26 pages, revtex, 6 postscript figures (available upon request
Deuteron Electroweak Disintegration
We study the deuteron electrodisintegration with inclusion of the neutral
currents focusing on the helicity asymmetry of the exclusive cross section in
coplanar geometry. We stress that a measurement of this asymmetry in the quasi
elastic region is of interest for an experimental determination of the weak
form factors of the nucleon, allowing one to obtain the parity violating
electron neutron asymmetry. Numerically, we consider the reaction at low
momentum transfer and discuss the sensitivity of the helicity asymmetry to the
strangeness radius and magnetic moment. The problems coming from the finite
angular acceptance of the spectrometers are also considered.Comment: 30 pages, Latex, 7 eps figures, submitted to Phys.Rev.C e-mail:

Parity violating target asymmetry in electron - proton scattering
We analyze the parity-violating (PV) components of the analyzing power in
elastic electron-proton scattering and discuss their sensitivity to the strange
quark contributions to the proton weak form factors. We point out that the
component of the analyzing power along the momentum transfer is independent of
the electric weak form factor and thus compares favorably with the PV beam
asymmetry for a determination of the strangeness magnetic moment. We also show
that the transverse component could be used for constraining the strangeness
radius. Finally, we argue that a measurement of both components could give
experimental information on the strangeness axial charge.Comment: 24 pages, Latex, 5 eps figures, submitted to Phys.Rev.
Parity nonconserving cold neutron-parahydrogen interactions
Three pion dominated observables of the parity nonconserving interactions
between the cold neutrons and parahydrogen are calculated. The transversely
polarized neutron spin rotation, unpolarized neutron longitudinal polarization,
and photon-asymmetry of the radiative polarized neutron capture are considered.
For the numerical evaluation of the observables, the strong interactions are
taken into account by the Reid93 potential and the parity nonconserving
interactions by the DDH model along with the two-pion exchange.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figure
Detection of Supernova Neutrinos by Neutrino-Proton Elastic Scattering
We propose that neutrino-proton elastic scattering, ,
can be used for the detection of supernova neutrinos in scintillator detectors.
Though the proton recoil kinetic energy spectrum is soft, with , and the scintillation light output from slow, heavily ionizing
protons is quenched, the yield above a realistic threshold is nearly as large
as that from . In addition, the measured proton
spectrum is related to the incident neutrino spectrum, which solves a
long-standing problem of how to separately measure the total energy and
temperature of , , , and .
The ability to detect this signal would give detectors like KamLAND and
Borexino a crucial and unique role in the quest to detect supernova neutrinos.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, revtex
Polarization phenomena in open charm photoproduction processes
We analyze polarization effects in associative photoproduction of
pseudoscalar () charmed mesons in exclusive processes , , . Circularly polarized photons
induce nonzero polarization of the -hyperon with - and -components
(in the reaction plane) and non vanishing asymmetries and for polarized nucleon target. These polarization observables can be
predicted in model-independent way for exclusive -production processes
in collinear kinematics. The T-even -polarization and asymmetries for
non-collinear kinematics can be calculated in framework of an effective
Lagrangian approach. The depolarization coefficients , characterizing
the dependence of the -polarization on the nucleon polarization are also
calculated.Comment: 36 pages 13 figure
Parity-Violating Excitation of the \Delta(1232): Hadron Structure and New Physics
We consider prospects for studying the parity-violating (PV) electroweak
excitation of the \Delta(1232) resonance with polarized electron scattering.
Given present knowledge of Standard Model parameters, such PV experiments could
allow a determination of the N -> \Delta electroweak helicity amplitudes. We
discuss the experimental feasibility and theoretical interpretability of such a
determination as well as the prospective implications for hadron structure
theory. We also analyze the extent to which a PV N -> \Delta measurement could
constrain various extensions of the Standard Model.Comment: 43 pages, RevTex, 8 PS figures, uses epsf.sty, rotate.sty, version to

Leading and higher twists in the proton polarized structure function at large Bjorken x
A phenomenological parameterization of the proton polarized structure
function has been developed for x > 0.02 using deep inelastic data up to ~ 50
(GeV/c)**2 as well as available experimental results on both photo- and
electro-production of proton resonances. According to the new parameterization
the generalized Drell-Hearn-Gerasimov sum rule is predicted to have a
zero-crossing point at Q**2 = 0.16 +/- 0.04 (GeV/c)**2. Then, low-order
polarized Nachtmann moments have been estimated and their Q**2-behavior has
been investigated in terms of leading and higher twists for Q**2 > 1
(GeV/c)**2. The leading twist has been treated at NLO in the strong coupling
constant and the effects of higher orders of the perturbative series have been
estimated using soft-gluon resummation techniques. In case of the first moment
higher-twist effects are found to be quite small for Q**2 > 1 (GeV/c)**2, and
the singlet axial charge has been determined to be a0[10 (GeV/c)**2] = 0.16 +/-
0.09. In case of higher order moments, which are sensitive to the large-x
region, higher-twist effects are significantly reduced by the introduction of
soft gluon contributions, but they are still relevant at Q**2 ~ few (GeV/c)**2
at variance with the case of the unpolarized transverse structure function of
the proton. Our finding suggests that spin-dependent correlations among partons
may have more impact than spin-independent ones. As a byproduct, it is also
shown that the Bloom-Gilman local duality is strongly violated in the region of
polarized electroproduction of the Delta(1232) resonance.Comment: revised version to appear in Phys. Rev. D; extended discussion on the

Bounds on the tau and muon neutrino vector and axial vector charge radius
A Majorana neutrino is characterized by just one flavor diagonal
electromagnetic form factor: the anapole moment, that in the static limit
corresponds to the axial vector charge radius . Experimental information
on this quantity is scarce, especially in the case of the tau neutrino. We
present a comprehensive analysis of the available data on the single photon
production process off Z-resonance, and we
discuss the constraints that these measurements can set on for the tau
neutrino. We also derive limits for the Dirac case, when the presence of a
vector charge radius is allowed. Finally, we comment on additional
experimental data on scattering from the NuTeV, E734, CCFR and
CHARM-II collaborations, and estimate the limits implied for and
for the muon neutrino.Comment: 20 pages, 2 eps figures. CCFR data included in the analysis.
