    Embarazo adolescente: Resultados perinatales en la maternidad de un hospital de la Ciudad de Corrientes

    El embarazo en la adolescencia constituye un grave problema de la salud pública, más aún en nuestro país donde presenta un alto porcentaje de casos, lo que involucra mayores riesgos de salud reproductiva aumentando de esta manera la morbilidad y mortalidad. El objetivo es analizar los resultados perinatales, en los recién nacidos de las gestantes adolescentes en la maternidad del Hospital "Dr José R. Vidal” de la ciudad de Corrientes. Estudio observacional, retrospectivo, analítico y transversal comprendido entre Agosto-2015 a Julio-2016. La población en estudio estuvo conformada por recién nacidos de madres adolescentes entre 10 a 19 años. Las variables fueron edad materna; semanas de gestación al momento del parto; peso del recién nacido de término; puntuación de Apgar y destino del recién nacido. Del total de partos el 22,14% fueron de madres adolescentes, de los cuales 77% correspondieron a nacimientos de término de peso adecuado para la edad gestacional (PAEG) (91,02%), con puntuación de Apgar normal (79%) que ingresaron a internación junto a la madre (82%). Los nacimientos de pretérmino resultaron 22,69%, siendo el 66,66% deprimidos moderados según Apgar y el 79,24% fueron trasladados a unidad de cuidados intensivos neonatales (UCIN). La frecuencia de embarazos adolescentes fue elevada, en cuanto a los resultados perinatales se observó peso adecuado, puntuación de Apgar normal e internación conjunta con la madre predominaron ampliamente en el recién nacido de termino.

    Diversity and virulence of Diaporthe species associated with wood disease symptoms in deciduous fruit trees in Uruguay

    Several Diaporthe species are recognized as causal agents of many plant disease symptoms, including twig and branch cankers, dieback, shoot blight, and root and fruit rots. In Uruguay, the proximity between apple, pear and peach orchards offers the possibility to study the presence of different Diaporthe spp. associated with wood cankers across different deciduous fruit trees. Symptomatic twigs and branches of these orchard species were sampled, and isolates of Diaporthe were obtained. Selected isolates were used for cross inoculations in the three hosts. Seven Diaporthe spp. were identified, based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA and the translation elongation factor 1-alpha gene (EF1-a) phylogenies. The species were: Diaporthe amygdali, D. foeniculina, D. infecunda, D. eres, D. terebinthifolii, D. oxe and D. phaseolorum, while two isolates Diaporthe sp. 1 and Diaporthe sp. 4 could not be assigned to any species. Diaporthe infecunda, D. eres, D. terebinthifolii, D. phaseolorum and D. oxe on Pyrus communis and D. foeniculina on Malus domestica represent new records in these hosts in Uruguay, while D. oxe isolated from Prunus persica is a new record for this species. Diaporthe eres and D. phaseolorum were the most virulent species, posing the greatest risk due to their wide distribution and virulence in apple and peach trees. Although pear trees showed less symptomatic tissues and were less susceptible than peach and apple trees in the pathogenicity tests, they harboured seven of the species, and therefore should be considered as reservoirs of Diaporthe in Uruguayan orchards.     Identification of a Functional Non-coding Variant in the GABA

    GABA type-A (GABA-A) receptors containing the α2 subunit (GABRA2) are expressed in most brain regions and are critical in modulating inhibitory synaptic function. Genetic variation at the GABRA2 locus has been implicated in epilepsy, affective and psychiatric disorders, alcoholism and drug abuse. Gabra2 expression varies as a function of genotype and is modulated by sequence variants in several brain structures and populations, including F2 crosses originating from C57BL/6J (B6J) and the BXD recombinant inbred family derived from B6J and DBA/2J. Here we demonstrate a global reduction of GABRA2 brain protein and mRNA in the B6J strain relative to other inbred strains, and identify and validate the causal mutation in B6J. The mutation is a single base pair deletion located in an intron adjacent to a splice acceptor site that only occurs in the B6J reference genome. The deletion became fixed in B6J between 1976 and 1991 and is now pervasive in many engineered lines, BXD strains generated after 1991, the Collaborative Cross, and the majority of consomic lines. Repair of the deletion using CRISPR-Cas9-mediated gene editing on a B6J genetic background completely restored brain levels of GABRA2 protein and mRNA. Comparison of transcript expression in hippocampus, cortex, and striatum between B6J and repaired genotypes revealed alterations in GABA-A receptor subunit expression, especially in striatum. These results suggest that naturally occurring variation in GABRA2 levels between B6J and other substrains or inbred strains may also explain strain differences in anxiety-like or alcohol and drug response traits related to striatal function. Characterization of the B6J private mutation in the Gabra2 gene is of critical importance to molecular genetic studies in neurobiological research because this strain is widely used to generate genetically engineered mice and murine genetic populations, and is the most widely utilized strain for evaluation of anxiety-like, depression-like, pain, epilepsy, and drug response traits that may be partly modulated by GABRA2 function

    Influence of gestational age at initiation of antihypertensive therapy: secondary analysis of CHIPS trial data (control of hypertension in pregnancy study)

    For hypertensive women in CHIPS (Control of Hypertension in Pregnancy Study), we assessed whether the maternal benefits of tight control could be achieved, while minimizing any potentially negative effect on fetal growth, by delaying initiation of antihypertensive therapy until later in pregnancy. For the 981 women with nonsevere, chronic or gestational hypertension randomized to less-tight (target diastolic blood pressure, 100 mm Hg), or tight (target, 85 mm Hg) control, we used mixed-effects logistic regression to examine whether the effect of less-tight (versus tight) control on major outcomes was dependent on gestational age at randomization, adjusting for baseline factors as in the primary analysis and including an interaction term between gestational age at randomization and treatment allocation. Gestational age was considered categorically (quartiles) and continuously (linear or quadratic form), and the optimal functional form selected to provide the best fit to the data based on the Akaike information criterion. Randomization before (but not after) 24 weeks to less-tight (versus tight) control was associated with fewer babies with birth weight 48 hours (Pinteraction=0.354). For the mother, less-tight (versus tight) control was associated with more severe hypertension at all gestational ages but particularly so before 28 weeks (Pinteraction=0.076). In women with nonsevere, chronic, or gestational hypertension, there seems to be no gestational age at which less-tight (versus tight) control is the preferred management strategy to optimize maternal or perinatal outcomes

    Women's views and postpartum follow-up in the CHIPS Trial (Control of Hypertension in Pregnancy Study).

    OBJECTIVE: To compare women's views about blood pressure (BP) control in CHIPS (Control of Hypertension In Pregnancy Study) (NCT01192412). DESIGN: Quantitative and qualitative analysis of questionnaire responses. SETTING: International randomised trial (94 sites, 15 countries). POPULATION/SAMPLE: 911 (92.9%) women randomised to 'tight' (target diastolic blood pressure, 85mmHg) or 'less tight' (target diastolic blood pressure, 100mmHg) who completed questionnaires. METHODS: A questionnaire was administered at ∼6-12 weeks postpartum regarding post-discharge morbidity and views about trial participation. Questionnaires were administered by the site co-ordinator, and contact was made by phone, home or clinic visit; rarely, data was collected from medical records. Quantitative analyses were Chi-square or Fisher's exact test for categorical variables, mixed effects multinomial logistic regression to adjust for confounders, and p<0.001 for statistical significance. NVivo software was used for thematic analysis of women's views. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Satisfaction, measured as willingness to have the same treatment in another pregnancy or recommend that treatment to a friend. RESULTS: Among the 533 women in 'tight' (N=265) vs. 'less tight' (N=268) control who provided comments for qualitative analysis, women in 'tight' (vs. 'less tight') control made fewer positive comments about the amount of medication taken (5 vs. 28 women, respectively) and intensity of BP monitoring (7 vs. 17, respectively). However, this did not translate into less willingness to either have the same treatment in another pregnancy (434, 95.8% vs. 423, 92.4%, respectively; p=0.14) or recommend that treatment to a friend (435, 96.0% and 428, 93.4%, respectively; p=0.17). Importantly, although satisfaction remained high among women with an adverse outcome, those in 'tight' control who suffered an adverse outcome (vs. those who did not) were not consistently less satisfied, whereas this was not the case among women in 'less tight' control among whom satisfaction was consistently lower for the CHIPS primary outcome (p<0.001), severe hypertension (p≤0.01), and pre-eclampsia (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Women in 'tight' (vs. 'less tight') control were equally satisfied with their care, and more so in the face of adverse perinatal or maternal outcomes

    Revisiting Proxima with ESPRESSO

    We aim to confirm the presence of Proxima b using independent measurements obtained with the new ESPRESSO spectrograph, and refine the planetary parameters taking advantage of its improved precision. We analysed 63 spectroscopic ESPRESSO observations of Proxima taken during 2019. We obtained radial velocity measurements with a typical radial velocity photon noise of 26 cm/s. We ran a joint MCMC analysis on the time series of the radial velocity and full-width half maximum of the cross-correlation function to model the planetary and stellar signals present in the data, applying Gaussian process regression to deal with stellar activity. We confirm the presence of Proxima b independently in the ESPRESSO data. The ESPRESSO data on its own shows Proxima b at a period of 11.218 ±\pm 0.029 days, with a minimum mass of 1.29 ±\pm 0.13 Me. In the combined dataset we measure a period of 11.18427 ±\pm 0.00070 days with a minimum mass of 1.173 ±\pm 0.086 Me. We find no evidence of stellar activity as a potential cause for the 11.2 days signal. We find some evidence for the presence of a second short-period signal, at 5.15 days with a semi-amplitude of merely 40 cm/s. If caused by a planetary companion, it would correspond to a minimum mass of 0.29 ±\pm 0.08 Me. We find that the FWHM of the CCF can be used as a proxy for the brightness changes and that its gradient with time can be used to successfully detrend the radial velocity data from part of the influence of stellar activity. The activity-induced radial velocity signal in the ESPRESSO data shows a trend in amplitude towards redder wavelengths. Velocities measured using the red end of the spectrograph are less affected by activity, suggesting that the stellar activity is spot-dominated. The data collected excludes the presence of extra companions with masses above 0.6 Me at periods shorter than 50 days.Comment: 25 pages, 26 figure

    Interactions between marine megafauna and plastic pollution in Southeast Asia

The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record Southeast (SE) Asia is a highly biodiverse region, yet it is also estimated to cumulatively contribute a third of the total global marine plastic pollution. This threat is known to have adverse impacts on marine megafauna, however, understanding of its impacts has recently been highlighted as a priority for research in the region. To address this knowledge gap, a structured literature review was conducted for species of cartilaginous fishes, marine mammals, marine reptiles, and seabirds present in SE Asia, collating cases on a global scale to allow for comparison, coupled with a regional expert elicitation to gather additional published and grey literature cases which would have been omitted during the structured literature review. Of the 380 marine megafauna species present in SE Asia, but also studied elsewhere, we found that 9.1 % and 4.5 % of all publications documenting plastic entanglement (n = 55) and ingestion (n = 291) were conducted in SE Asian countries. At the species level, published cases of entanglement from SE Asian countries were available for 10 % or less of species within each taxonomic group. Additionally, published ingestion cases were available primarily for marine mammals and were lacking entirely for seabirds in the region. The regional expert elicitation led to entanglement and ingestion cases from SE Asian countries being documented in 10 and 15 additional species respectively, highlighting the utility of a broader approach to data synthesis. While the scale of the plastic pollution in SE Asia is of particular concern for marine ecosystems, knowledge of its interactions and impacts on marine megafauna lags behind other areas of the world, even after the inclusion of a regional expert elicitation.     Haplotype analysis and genetic variability of Togninia minima from different geographic sources.

    SUMMARY.Togninia minima (anamorph Phaeoacremonium aleophilum) is one of the main fungi responsible for trunk diseases of grapevines and other woody hosts worldwide. Sequences of protein-coding genes of isolates from countries in different continents have been published, presenting a useful resource for examination of the diversity and spatial distribution of T. minima genotypes. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) detected in public sequences of the actin and partial β-tubulin genes were used to assess the genetic variability and to determine haplotypes of isolates of this species from different sources. The Italian sample showed the greatest allele number and the largest number of haplotypes. Most haplotypes were present in more than one country, except for haplotype 11010 which was found only in Italy and 10111 found only in Canada. Haplotype 11111 was the most conspicuous and cosmopolitan, being present in six countries and on three host plant species. One observed polymorphism in the noncoding region of the β-tubulin gene could be targeted with allele-specific primers to detect this particular haplotype

    The concept of "one health" is gaining strength at a global scale. The term summarizes a notion that has been known for more than a century: human and animal health are interdependent and linked to the ecosystems in which they coexist. In the International Year of Plant Health (2020), it is crucial that the agricultural sciences call attention for the need to consider the health of plants and their microbiome as a whole within the ?one health? concept, closely linked to the health of the soil, the environment, animals and humans. In the context of agroecological production based on the sustainable management of natural resources, integrated pest management has been promoted to reduce the use of pesticides and mitigate negative effects on human and environmental health. The combination of genetic resistance with cultural and biological control have contributed to achieving this goal. The management of the microbiome offers also the possibility of addressing plant nutritional issues and the continuum between environmental, plant, animal and human health. With its strategic plan and longterm vision, INIA plays an essential role in the generation of knowledge and technologies, acting in accordance to the one health approach
