    Get PDF

Kidney histological alterations and metallothionein and heat shock protein expression in Wistar rats after fungicide thiram exposure

The histological alterations and the expression of metallothionein (MTs) and heat shock protein (Hsp70) in the kidney of Wistar rats after thiram fungicide exposure were evaluated. Animals were distributed into three groups: standard diet group, standard diet + corn oil group and thiram group. Significant differences were found (P<0,05) in the evolution of body weight between rats in the thiram group and those in the control and corn oil groups, and no histological lesions were evident in the animals’ kidneys. Differences were found among animals in the group exposed to thiram and the control and oil groups regarding histomorphometric characteristics of the renal corpuscle – except for the proportion in the area of Bowman’s capsule: glomerulus area – and regarding the height of the epitelium in the distal tubules. In rats exposed to thiram, a positive moderate to strong immunoexpression was observed for MTs, in the cortical convulated tubules decreasing the cortex towards the medulla, and a strong immunoexpression for Hsp70 in the cortex and medulla areas, in the glomerulus and convulated tubules. The results suggest that thiram may have chronic toxicity in mammals affecting their growth, and that the expression of MTs and Hsp70, a probable cellular adaptive response to the oxidative stress caused by thiram, may be used as a biomarker of exposure to this chemical. Keywords: rat, kidney, thiram, histology, metallothioneins, heat shock proteins (Hsp70

Expressão da caderina na discondroplasia tibial

By immunohistochemistry the expression of a pan-cadherin antibody that recognizes a wide variety of cadherins in chondrocytes from normal and tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) growth plates was compared. Surprisingly, an upregulated expression that was not expected in TD lesion chondrocytes was observed. The reason for this apparent upregulation is not clear. The increased expression may simply be due to the particular phenotype of lesion chondrocytes, and cadherin may be involved in apoptosis of chondrocytes of TD lesion. Another possibility, is that a low level of calcium in the lesion may be responsible for the observed upregulation. The results of the present study suggest that the formation of the dyschondroplastic lesion is not merely due to the impaired terminal differentiation of lesion chondrocytes and that other mechanisms are probably involved in TD etiology. Further studies will be necessary to provide insight into the precise nature of the condition

Comportamento de próteses de anca de baixa rigidez material: a interface osso-implante

    Get PDF

    Get PDF

Hematological and biochemical parameters, including plasma electrolytes and thyroid hormones, were determined in 73 clinically healthy Churra-da-Terra-Quente ewes, a typical breed from the northeast of Portugal. The hemogram values were: erythrocytes 9.8±1.51012/L; haemoglobin 118.1±19.1g/L; haematocrit 40.8±5.9%; leukocytes 5.7±1.8109/L; and platelets 544.3±177.2109/L. The thrombin time was 17.3±1.7 seconds. The values of biochemical parameters were: total protein 76.4±6.1g/L; glucose 2.87±0.60mmol/L; total cholesterol 1.65±0.33mmol/L; aspartate aminotransferase 155.9±49.2U/L; alanine aminotransferase 23.2±9.6U/L; γ-glutamyl transferase 48.0±18.7U/L; total alkaline phosphatase 121.6±76.1U/L; glutamate dehydrogenase 6.4±3.7U/L; urea 7.32±2.22mmol/L; creatinine 123.0±54.1μmol/L; total calcium 2.53±0.25mmol/L; phosphorus 2.10±0.46mmol/L; magnesium 1.01±0.09mmol/L; sodium 152.04±3.65mmol/L; potassium 4.7±0.4mmol/L; ionized calcium 1.32±0.07mmol/L; total thyroxine 111.75±42.29nmol/L; total triiodothyronine 1.01±0.28nmol/L; free T4 11.93±1.78pmol/L; free T3 4.22±1.33pmol/L; and thyroid-stimulating hormone 0.18±0.19μIU/mL. Although differences among the Churra-da-Terra-Quente breed and other breeds may occur, the hematological and biochemical parameters, plasma electrolytes, and thyroid hormones, for this indigenous breed, were generally situated within the reference intervals previously reported for sheep

The global network of gravitational-wave observatories now includes five detectors, namely LIGO Hanford, LIGO Livingston, Virgo, KAGRA, and GEO 600. These detectors collected data during their third observing run, O3, composed of three phases: O3a starting in 2019 April and lasting six months, O3b starting in 2019 November and lasting five months, and O3GK starting in 2020 April and lasting two weeks. In this paper we describe these data and various other science products that can be freely accessed through the Gravitational Wave Open Science Center at https://gwosc.org. The main data set, consisting of the gravitational-wave strain time series that contains the astrophysical signals, is released together with supporting data useful for their analysis and documentation, tutorials, as well as analysis software packages
