Associate Higgs and Gauge Boson Production at Hadron Colliders in a Model with Vector Resonances
Motivated by new models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking that
predict a light composite higgs boson, we build an effective lagrangian which
describes the Standard Model (with a light Higgs) and vector resonances. We
compute the cross section for the associate production of a higgs and a gauge
boson. For some values of model parameters we find that the cross section is
significantly enhanced with respect to the Standard Model. This enhancement is
similar at the LHC and the Tevatron for the same range of resonance mass
How fundamental is the character of thermal uncertainty relations?
We show that thermodynamic uncertainties do not preserve their form if the
underlying probability distribution is transformed into an escort one.
Heisenberg's relations, on the other hand, are not affected by such
transformation. We conclude therefore that the former uncertainty cannot be as

Glass Transition of Hard Sphere Systems: Molecular Dynamics and Density Functional Theory
The glass transition of a hard sphere system is investigated within the
framework of the density functional theory (DFT). Molecular dynamics (MD)
simulations are performed to study dynamical behavior of the system on the one
hand and to provide the data to produce the density field for the DFT on the
other hand. Energy landscape analysis based on the DFT shows that there appears
a metastable (local) free energy minimum representing an amorphous state as the
density is increased. This state turns out to become stable, compared with the
uniform liquid, at some density, around which we also observe sharp slowing
down of the relaxation in MD simulations.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Age constraints and fine tuning in variable-mass particle models
VAMP (variable-mass particles) scenarios, in which the mass of the cold dark
matter particles is a function of the scalar field responsible for the present
acceleration of the Universe, have been proposed as a solution to the cosmic
coincidence problem, since in the attractor regime both dark energy and dark
matter scale in the same way. We find that only a narrow region in parameter
space leads to models with viable values for the Hubble constant and dark
energy density today. In the allowed region, the dark energy density starts to
dominate around the present epoch and consequently such models cannot solve the
coincidence problem. We show that the age of the Universe in this scenario is
considerably higher than the age for noncoupled dark energy models, and
conclude that more precise independent measurements of the age of the Universe
would be useful in distinguishing between coupled and noncoupled dark energy

CUORE: A Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events
CUORE is a proposed tightly packed array of 1000 TeO2 bolometers, each being
a cube 5 cm on a side with a mass of 760 g. The array consists of 25 vertical
towers, arranged in a square of 5 towers by 5 towers, each containing 10 layers
of 4 crystals. The design of the detector is optimized for ultralow-background
searches: for neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te (33.8% abundance), cold
dark matter, solar axions, and rare nuclear decays. A preliminary experiment
involving 20 crystals 3x3x6 cm3 of 340 g has been completed, and a single CUORE
tower is being constructed as a smaller scale experiment called CUORICINO. The
expected performance and sensitivity, based on Monte Carlo simulations and

LSD1-mediated enhancer silencing attenuates retinoic acid signalling during pancreatic endocrine cell development
Developmental progression depends on temporally defined changes in gene expression mediated by transient exposure of lineage intermediates to signals in the progenitor niche. To determine whether cell-intrinsic epigenetic mechanisms contribute to signal-induced transcriptional responses, here we manipulate the signalling environment and activity of the histone demethylase LSD1 during differentiation of hESC-gut tube intermediates into pancreatic endocrine cells. We identify a transient requirement for LSD1 in endocrine cell differentiation spanning a short time-window early in pancreas development, a phenotype we reproduced in mice. Examination of enhancer and transcriptome landscapes revealed that LSD1 silences transiently active retinoic acid (RA)-induced enhancers and their target genes. Furthermore, prolonged RA exposure phenocopies LSD1 inhibition, suggesting that LSD1 regulates endocrine cell differentiation by limiting the duration of RA signalling. Our findings identify LSD1-mediated enhancer silencing as a cell-intrinsic epigenetic feedback mechanism by which the duration of the transcriptional response to a developmental signal is limited
First-order formalism for dark energy and dust
This work deals with first-order formalism for dark energy and dust in
standard cosmology, for models described by real scalar field in the presence
of dust in spatially flat space. The field dynamics may be standard or
tachyonic, and we show how the equations of motion can be solved by first-order
differential equations. We investigate a model to illustrate how the dustlike

GH safety workshop position paper: A critical appraisal of recombinant human GH therapy in children and adults
Recombinant human GH (rhGH) has been in use for 30 years, and over that time its safety and efficacy in children and adults has been subject to considerable scrutiny. In 2001, a statement from the GH Research Society (GRS) concluded that 'for approved indications, GH is safe'; however, the statement highlighted a number of areas for on-going surveillance of long-Term safety, including cancer risk, impact on glucose homeostasis, and use of high dose pharmacological rhGH treatment. Over the intervening years, there have been a number of publications addressing the safety of rhGH with regard to mortality, cancer and cardiovascular risk, and the need for long-Term surveillance of the increasing number of adults who were treated with rhGH in childhood. Against this backdrop of interest in safety, the European Society of Paediatric Endocrinology (ESPE), the GRS, and the Pediatric Endocrine Society (PES) convened a meeting to reappraise the safety of rhGH.
