Sex-specific selection drives the evolution of alternative splicing in birds
Males and females of the same species share the majority of their genomes, yet they are frequently exposed to conflicting selection pressures. Gene regulation is widely assumed to resolve these conflicting sex-specific selection pressures, and although there has been considerable focus on elucidating the role of gene expression level in sex-specific adaptation, other regulatory mechanisms have been overlooked. Alternative splicing enables different transcripts to be generated from the same gene, meaning that exons which have sex-specific beneficial effects can in theory be retained in the gene product, while exons with detrimental effects can be skipped. However, at present, little is known about how sex-specific selection acts on broad patterns of alternative splicing. Here we investigate alternative splicing across males and females of multiple bird species. We identify hundreds of genes that have sex-specific patterns of splicing, and establish that sex differences in splicing are correlated with phenotypic sex differences. Additionally, we find that alternatively spliced genes have evolved rapidly as a result of sex-specific selection, and suggest that sex differences in splicing offer another route to sex-specific adaptation when gene expression level changes are limited by functional constraints. Overall, our results shed light on how a diverse transcriptional framework can give rise to the evolution of phenotypic sexual dimorphism
Phenotypic sexual dimorphism is associated with genomic signatures of resolved sexual conflict
Intraâlocus sexual conflict, where an allele benefits one sex at the expense of the other, has an important role in shaping genetic diversity of populations through balancing selection. However, the potential for mating systems to exert balancing selection through sexual conflict on the genome remains unclear. Furthermore, the nature and potential for resolution of sexual conflict across the genome has been hotly debated. To address this, we analysed de novo transcriptomes from six avian species, chosen to reflect the full range of sexual dimorphism and mating systems. Our analyses combine expression and population genomic statistics across reproductive and somatic tissue, with measures of sperm competition and promiscuity. Our results reveal that balancing selection is weakest in the gonad, consistent with the resolution of sexual conflict and evolutionary theory that phenotypic sex differences are associated with lower levels of ongoing conflict. We also demonstrate a clear link between variation in sexual conflict and levels of genetic variation across phylogenetic space in a comparative framework. Our observations suggest that this conflict is shortâlived, and is resolved via the decoupling of male and female gene expression patterns, with important implications for the role of sexual selection in adaptive potential and role of dimorphism in facilitating sexâspecific fitness optima
Soil seed banks and growth rates of an invasive species, Piper aduncum, in the lowlands of Papua New Guinea
Secondary fallow vegetation in parts of the Papua New Guinea lowlands is dominated by the shrub Piper aduncum L. that originates from South America. Here we report on its seed bank, growth rate and biomass accumulation. P. aduncum accounted for 69 % (408 m[minus sign]2) of the seed bank in the forest and 53 % (1559 m[minus sign]2) of the seed bank under fallow. About 90 % of the tree seed bank at the fallow site was dominated by P. aduncum whereas this was 78 % in the forest soil. Two-year-old P. aduncum had grown to 4.5 m height and had accumulated 48 Mg dry matter (DM) per ha of above ground biomass. The rate of biomass accumulation increased from 10 Mg DM ha[minus sign]1 y[minus sign]1 in the first year to 40 Mg DM ha[minus sign]1 y[minus sign]1 in the second year when 76 % of the biomass consisted of mainstems. The highest growth rate of 134 kg DM ha[minus sign]1 d[minus sign]1 occurred when P. aduncum was 17-mo-old. Aggressive invasion and monospecific stands of P. aduncum are explained by its dominance in the seed bank, fast growth, and high rates of biomass accumulation. P. aduncum is a major competitor to indigenous tree species and presents a threat to Papua New Guinea's rich biodiversity
Multi-copy gene family evolution on the avian W chromosome
The sex chromosomes often follow unusual evolutionary trajectories. In particular, the sex-limited Y and W chromosomes frequently exhibit a small but unusual gene content in numerous species, where many genes have undergone massive gene amplification. The reasons for this remain elusive with a number of recent studies implicating meiotic drive, sperm competition, genetic drift and gene conversion in the expansion of gene families. However, our understanding is primarily based on Y chromosome studies as few studies have systematically tested for copy number variation on W chromosomes. Here, we conduct a comprehensive investigation into the abundance, variability, and evolution of ampliconic genes on the avian W. First, we quantified gene copy number and variability across the duck W chromosome. We find a limited number of gene families as well as conservation in W-linked gene copy number across duck breeds, indicating that gene amplification may not be such a general feature of sex chromosome evolution as Y studies would initially suggest. Next, we investigate the evolution of HINTW, a prominent ampliconic gene family hypothesized to play a role in female reproduction and oogenesis. In particular, we investigate the factors driving the expansion of HINTW using contrasts between modern chicken and duck breeds selected for different female-specific selection regimes and their wild ancestors. Although we find the potential for selection related to fecundity in explaining small-scale gene amplification of HINTW in the chicken, purifying selection seems to be the dominant mode of evolution in the duck. Together, this challenges the assumption that HINTW is key for female fecundity across the avian phylogeny
Reflection and Ducting of Gravity Waves Inside the Sun
Internal gravity waves excited by overshoot at the bottom of the convection
zone can be influenced by rotation and by the strong toroidal magnetic field
that is likely to be present in the solar tachocline. Using a simple Cartesian
model, we show how waves with a vertical component of propagation can be
reflected when traveling through a layer containing a horizontal magnetic field
with a strength that varies with depth. This interaction can prevent a portion
of the downward-traveling wave energy flux from reaching the deep solar
interior. If a highly reflecting magnetized layer is located some distance
below the convection zone base, a duct or wave guide can be set up, wherein
vertical propagation is restricted by successive reflections at the upper and
lower boundaries. The presence of both upward- and downward-traveling
disturbances inside the duct leads to the existence of a set of horizontally
propagating modes that have significantly enhanced amplitudes. We point out
that the helical structure of these waves makes them capable of generating an
alpha-effect, and briefly consider the possibility that propagation in a shear
of sufficient strength could lead to instability, the result of wave growth due

Motivation as a predictor of outcomes in school-based humanistic counselling
Recent years have seen a growth in the provision of counselling within UK secondary schools, and research indicates that it is associated with significant reductions in psychological distress. However, little is known about the moderators and mediators of positive therapeutic benefit. In the field of adult mental health, motivation has been found to be one of the strongest predictors of therapeutic outcomes, and it was hypothesised that this may also be a predictor of outcomes for young people in school-based counselling services. To assess the relationship between young peopleâs motivation for counselling and its effectiveness within a secondary school setting. Eighty-one young people (12 - 17 years old) who attended school-based humanistic counselling services in Scotland. Clients completed a measure of motivation for counselling at the commencement of their therapeutic work and a measure of psychological wellbeing at the commencement and termination of counselling. Motivation for counselling was not found to be significantly related to outcomes. The results indicate that the association between motivation and outcomes may be weaker in young people as compared with adults. However, a number of design factors may also account for the non-significant findings: insufficient participants, marginal reliability of the motivation measure and social desirability effects
Foundations of population-based SHM, Part I : homogeneous populations and forms
In Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), measured data that correspond to an extensive set of operational and damage conditions (for a given structure) are rarely available. One potential solution considers that information might be transferred, in some sense, between similar systems. A population-based approach to SHM looks to both model and transfer this missing information, by considering data collected from groups of similar structures. Specifically, in this work, a framework is proposed to model a population of nominally-identical systems, such that (complete) datasets are only available from a subset of members. The SHM strategy defines a general model, referred to as the population form, which is used to monitor a homogeneous group of systems. First, the framework is demonstrated through applications to a simulated population, with one experimental (test-rig) member; the form is then adapted and applied to signals recorded from an operational wind farm
Maternal Characteristics and Clinical Diagnoses Influence Obstetrical Outcomes in Indonesia
This Indonesian study evaluates associations between near-miss status/death with maternal demographic, health care characteristics, and obstetrical complications, comparing results using retrospective and prospective data. The main outcome measures were obstetric conditions and socio-economic factors to predict near-miss/death. We abstracted all obstetric admissions (1,358 retrospective and 1,240 prospective) from two district hospitals in East Java, Indonesia between 4/1/2009 and 5/15/2010. Prospective data added socio-economic status, access to care and referral patterns. Reduced logistic models were constructed, and multivariate analyses used to assess association of risk variables to outcome. Using multivariate analysis, variables associated with risk of near-miss/death include postpartum hemorrhage (retrospective AOR 5.41, 95 % CI 2.64â11.08; prospective AOR 10.45, 95 % CI 5.59â19.52) and severe preeclampsia/ eclampsia (retrospective AOR 1.94, 95 % CI 1.05â3.57; prospective AOR 3.26, 95 % CI 1.79â5.94). Associations with near-miss/death were seen for antepartum hemorrhage in retrospective data (AOR 9.34, 95 % CI 4.34â20.13), and prospectively for poverty (AOR 2.17, 95 % CI 1.33â3.54) and delivering outside the hospital (AOR 2.04, 95 % CI 1.08â3.82). Postpartum hemorrhage and severe preeclampsia/ eclampsia are leading causes of near-miss/death in Indonesia. Poverty and delivery outside the hospital are significant risk factors. Prompt recognition of complications, timely referrals, standardized care protocols, prompt hospital triage, and structured provider education may reduce obstetric mortality and morbidity. Retrospective data were reliable, but prospective data provided valuable information about barriers to care and referral patterns
Probabilistic modelling of wind turbine power curves with application of heteroscedastic gaussian process regression
There exists continued interest in building accurate models of wind turbine power curves for better understanding of performance or assessment of the condition of the turbine or both. Better predictions of the power curve allow increased insight into the operation of the turbine, aid operational decision making, and can be a key feature of online monitoring and fault detection strategies. This work proposes the use of a heteroscedastic Gaussian Process model for this task. The model has a number of attractive properties when modelling power curves. These include, removing the need to specify a parametric functional form for the power curve and automatic quantification of the variance in the prediction. The model exists within a Bayesian framework which exhibits built-in protection against over-fitting and robustness to noisy measurements. The model is shown to be effective on data collected from an operational wind turbine, returning accurate mean predictions ( normalised mean-squared error) and higher likelihoods than a corresponding homoscedastic model
Women, men and coronary heart disease: a review of the qualitative literature
Aim. This paper presents a review of the qualitative literature which examines the experiences of patients with coronary heart disease. The paper also assesses whether the experiences of both female and male patients are reflected in the literature and summarizes key themes.
Background. Understanding patients' experiences of their illness is important for coronary heart disease prevention and education. Qualitative methods are particularly suited to eliciting patients' detailed understandings and perceptions of illness. As much previous research has been 'gender neutral', this review pays particular attention to gender.
Methods. Published papers from 60 qualitative studies were identified for the review through searches in MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PREMEDLINE, PsychINFO, Social Sciences Citation Index and Web of Science using keywords related to coronary heart disease.
Findings. Early qualitative studies of patients with coronary heart disease were conducted almost exclusively with men, and tended to generalize from 'male' experience to 'human' experience. By the late 1990s this pattern had changed, with the majority of studies including women and many being conducted with solely female samples. However, many studies that include both male and female coronary heart disease patients still do not have a specific gender focus. Key themes in the literature include interpreting symptoms and seeking help, belief about coronary 'candidates' and relationships with health professionals. The influence of social roles is important: many female patients have difficulties reconciling family responsibilities and medical advice, while male patients worry about being absent from work.
Conclusions. There is a need for studies that compare the experiences of men and women. There is also an urgent need for work that takes masculinity and gender roles into account when exploring the experiences of men with coronary heart disease
