How much charm can PANDA produce?
We consider the production of charmed baryons and mesons in the
proton-antiproton binary reactions at the energies of the future ANDA
experiment. To describe these processes in terms of hadronic interaction
models, one needs strong couplings of the initial nucleons with the
intermediate and final charmed hadrons. Similar couplings enter the models of
binary reactions with strange hadrons. For both charmed and strange hadrons we
employ the strong couplings and their ratios calculated from QCD light-cone sum
rules. In this method finite masses of and quarks are taken into
account. Employing the Kaidalov's quark-gluon string model with Regge poles and
adjusting the normalization of the amplitudes in this model to the calculated
strong couplings, we estimate the production cross section of charmed hadrons.

Geodesic Deviation in Kaluza-Klein Theories
We study in detail the equations of the geodesic deviation in
multidimensional theories of Kaluza-Klein type. We show that their
4-dimensional space-time projections are identical with the equations obtained
by direct variation of the usual geodesic equation in the presence of the
Lorentz force, provided that the fifth component of the deviation vector

Is the brick-wall model unstable for a rotating background?
The stability of the brick wall model is analyzed in a rotating background.
It is shown that in the Kerr background without horizon but with an inner
boundary a scalar field has complex-frequency modes and that, however, the
imaginary part of the complex frequency can be small enough compared with the
Hawking temperature if the inner boundary is sufficiently close to the horizon,
say at a proper altitude of Planck scale. Hence, the time scale of the
instability due to the complex frequencies is much longer than the relaxation
time scale of the thermal state with the Hawking temperature. Since ambient
fields should settle in the thermal state in the latter time scale, the
instability is not so catastrophic. Thus, the brick wall model is well defined
even in a rotating background if the inner boundary is sufficiently close to

Absolutely continuous spectrum for multi-type Galton Watson trees
We consider multi-type Galton Watson trees that are close to a tree of finite
cone type in distribution. Moreover, we impose that each vertex has at least
one forward neighbor. Then, we show that the spectrum of the Laplace operator
exhibits almost surely a purely absolutely continuous component which is

Quantification of bacterial indicators and zoonotic pathogens in dairy wastewater ponds
Zoonotic pathogens in land-applied dairy wastewaters are a potential health risk. The abundance and occurrence of 10 pathogens and 3 fecal indicators was determined by quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) in 30 dairy wastewaters from southern Idaho. Samples tested positive for Campylobacter jejuni, stx1- and eaeA-positive Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Mycobacterium avium, and Salmonella enterica, with mean recoveries ranging from 1,000 to 10,000 genome copies per mL of wastewater. The most dominant organisms were C. jejuni and M. avium, being detected in up to 21 and 29 of 30 wastewater ponds, respectively. The qPCR detection limits for the putative pathogens in the wastewaters ranged from 16 cells mL for M. avium to 1,689 oocysts mL for Cryptosporidum. Cryptosporidium and Giardia spp., Yersinia pseudotuberculosis, and pathogenic Leptospira spp. were not detected by qPCR
Star-graph expansions for bond-diluted Potts models
We derive high-temperature series expansions for the free energy and the
susceptibility of random-bond -state Potts models on hypercubic lattices
using a star-graph expansion technique. This method enables the exact
calculation of quenched disorder averages for arbitrary uncorrelated coupling
distributions. Moreover, we can keep the disorder strength as well as the
dimension as symbolic parameters. By applying several series analysis
techniques to the new series expansions, one can scan large regions of the
parameter space for any value of . For the bond-diluted 4-state
Potts model in three dimensions, which exhibits a rather strong first-order
phase transition in the undiluted case, we present results for the transition
temperature and the effective critical exponent as a function of
as obtained from the analysis of susceptibility series up to order 18. A
comparison with recent Monte Carlo data (Chatelain {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev.
E64, 036120(2001)) shows signals for the softening to a second-order transition

Universality Class of Thermally Diluted Ising Systems at Criticality
The universality class of thermally diluted Ising systems, in which the
realization of the disposition of magnetic atoms and vacancies is taken from
the local distribution of spins in the pure original Ising model at
criticality, is investigated by finite size scaling techniques using the Monte
Carlo method. We find that the critical temperature, the critical exponents and
therefore the universality class of these thermally diluted Ising systems
depart markedly from the ones of short range correlated disordered systems. Our
results agree fairly well with theoretical predictions previously made by
Weinrib and Halperin for systems with long range correlated disorder.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, RevTe
Characterization of neutrino signals with radiopulses in dense media through the LPM effect
We discuss the possibilities of detecting radio pulses from high energy
showers in ice, such as those produced by PeV and EeV neutrino interactions. It
is shown that the rich radiation pattern structure in the 100 MHz to few GHz
allows the separation of electromagnetic showers induced by photons or
electrons above 100 PeV from those induced by hadrons. This opens up the
possibility of measuring the energy fraction transmitted to the electron in a
charged current electron neutrino interaction with adequate sampling of the
angular distribution of the signal. The radio technique has the potential to

A Classification of Toroidal Orientifold Models
We develop the general tools for model building with orientifolds, including
SS supersymmetry breaking. In this paper, we work out the general formulae of
the tadpole conditions for a class of non supersymmetric orientifold models of
type IIB string theory compactified on , based on the general properties
of the orientifold group elements. By solving the tadpoles we obtain the

On the distribution of bids for construction contract auctions
The statistical distribution representing bid values constitutes an essential part of many auction models and has involved a wide range of assumptions, including the Uniform, Normal, Lognormal and Weibull densities. From a modelling point of view, its goodness is defined by how well it enables the probability of a particular bid value to be estimated â a past bid for ex-post analysis and a future bid for ex-ante (forecasting) analysis. However, there is no agreement to date of what is the most appropriate form and empirical work is sparse.
Twelve extant construction datasets from four continents over different time periods are analysed in this paper for their fit to a variety of candidate statistical distributions assuming homogeneity of bidders (ID not known). The results show there is no one single fit-all distribution, but that the 3p Log-Normal, FrĂ©chet/2p Log-Normal, Normal, Gamma and Gumbel generally rank the best ex-post, and the 2p Log-Normal, Normal, Gamma and Gumbel the best ex-ante â with ex-ante having around three to four times worse fit than ex-post. Final comments focus on the results relating to the third and fourth standardised moments of the bids and a post-hoc rationalisation of the empirical outcome of the analysis
