Energy and time resolution for a LYSO matrix prototype of the Mu2e experiment

Can the choice of building performance simulation tool significantly alter the level of predicted indoor overheating risk in London flats?
The accurate prediction of building indoor overheating risk is critical in order to mitigate its possible consequences on occupant health and wellbeing. The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers issued Technical Memorandum 59 (TM59) with the aim of achieving consistency in the modelling processes followed for the prediction of overheating risk in new dwellings. However, as each tool’s prediction may depend on its inherent assumptions, an inter-model comparison procedure was used to assess whether the choice of building performance simulation tool influences the overheating assessment. The predictions of two popular tools, IES VE and EnergyPlus, were compared for nine variations of a naturally ventilated, purpose built, London flat archetype, modelled under the default algorithm options. EnergyPlus predicted a high overheating risk according to TM59 criteria in seven out of the nine model variants, contrary to the low risk of all the IES VE variants. Analysis of heat transfer processes revealed that wind-driven ventilation and surface convection algorithms were the main sources of the observed discrepancies. The choice of simulation tool could thus influence the overheating risk assessment in flats, while the observed discrepancies in the simulation of air and heat transfer could have implications on other modelling applications.
Practical application: Technical Memorandum 59 issued by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers may be widely adopted within the industry to assist the prediction of overheating risk in new dwellings. This work suggests that the choice of building performance simulation tool can greatly influence the predicted overheating risk. Furthermore, the differences identified in the modelling of heat transfer processes could also impact other modelling applications. Following these results, the need for detailed empirical validation studies of naturally ventilated homes has been highlighted
What are the implications of building simulation algorithm choice on indoor overheating risk assessment?
Building performance simulation tools commonly offer several algorithm options for most heat transfer processes being modelled. The impact of this choice on indoor overheating risk, assessed using the criteria
described in the CIBSE Technical Memorandum 59, was quantified for a naturally ventilated dwelling archetype in two popular tools. By selecting nondefault algorithm options, the predicted overheating
risk changed from high to low for 33% of the cases in tool A and doubled the predicted overheating hours in certain rooms in tool B. Given these findings, modellers should carefully decide on the algorithms being
used and publish them for increased transparency
Performance of the LHCb muon system with cosmic rays
The LHCb Muon system performance is presented using cosmic ray events
collected in 2009. These events allowed to test and optimize the detector
configuration before the LHC start. The space and time alignment and the
measurement of chamber efficiency, time resolution and cluster size are
described in detail. The results are in agreement with the expected detector

Search for dark Higgsstrahlung in e+ e- -> mu+ mu- and missing energy events with the KLOE experiment
We searched for evidence of a Higgsstrahlung process in a secluded sector,
leading to a final state with a dark photon U and a dark Higgs boson h', with
the KLOE detector at DAFNE. We investigated the case of h' lighter than U, with
U decaying into a muon pair and h' producing a missing energy signature. We
found no evidence of the process and set upper limits to its parameters in the
range 2m_mu<m_U<1000 MeV, m_h'<m_U.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Physics Letters
Performance of the LHCb muon system
The performance of the LHCb Muon system and its stability across the full
2010 data taking with LHC running at ps = 7 TeV energy is studied. The
optimization of the detector setting and the time calibration performed with
the first collisions delivered by LHC is described. Particle rates, measured
for the wide range of luminosities and beam operation conditions experienced
during the run, are compared with the values expected from simulation. The
space and time alignment of the detectors, chamber efficiency, time resolution
and cluster size are evaluated. The detector performance is found to be as
expected from specifications or better. Notably the overall efficiency is well

The Boom of cohabitation in Colombia and in the Andean Region : social and spatial patterns
In this chapter we use census microdata to document the rise in cohabitation in Colombia and in the Andean countries of Ecuador, Bolivia, Perú and Venezuela over the last four decades. We use multilevel logistic regression models to examine the effect of individual and contextual variables on cohabitation. We show the individual and contextual effects of social stratification, ethnicity and religion on cohabitation. Cohabitation levels follow a negative gradient with education and vary according to ethnic background. The Bolivian, Ecuadorian and Peruvian censuses reveal that the two largest ethnic groups (i.e. the Quechua and Aymara) have, controlling for other characteristics, the lowest incidence of cohabitation. By contrast, Afro-American populations show the highest levels of cohabitation. The joint use of individual- and contextual-level explanatory variables is sufficient to account for the majority of Bolivia's internal diversity regarding cohabitation, but not sufficient to account for the internal diversity identified in Colombia, Peru or Ecuador. Even after controls, residence in the Andes mountain areas continues to be a factor associated with lower levels of cohabitation. This invites further investigations on how the institutionalization of marriage occurred in the Andes
A network-specific approach to percolation in networks with bidirectional links
Methods for determining the percolation threshold usually study the behavior
of network ensembles and are often restricted to a particular type of
probabilistic node/link removal strategy. We propose a network-specific method
to determine the connectivity of nodes below the percolation threshold and
offer an estimate to the percolation threshold in networks with bidirectional
links. Our analysis does not require the assumption that a network belongs to a
specific ensemble and can at the same time easily handle arbitrary removal
strategies (previously an open problem for undirected networks). In validating
our analysis, we find that it predicts the effects of many known complex
structures (e.g., degree correlations) and may be used to study both
probabilistic and deterministic attacks.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figure
