Selection of artichoke plants and analysis of correlation between quantitative traits for fresh consumption
The goals of the present study were to evaluate and select artichoke plants suitable for fresh consumption and to establish correlations between quantitative traits. Clones from 39 accessions were obtained from the germplasm collection of the University of Passo Fundo and evaluated for 17 quantitative and 3 qualitative traits. Data on quantitative traits were subjected to analysis of variance followed by a Tukey test at p<0.05 to compare averages, and correlations were analyzed using the Pearson product moment correlation coefficient. Significant differences were observed for 9 of the 17 quantitative traits analyzed, and 10 of the 39 accessions presented higher values for some of those traits than the remaining tested accessions. Significant correlations were observed between several traits and the capitulum yield, which makes indirect selection easier. For the qualitative traits, nine accessions were selected that presented circular head, violet colored bracts and absence of thorns, which are desirable traits for fresh consumption.Los objetivos del presente estudio fueron evaluar y seleccionar plantas de alcachofa aptas para consumo en fresco y establecer correlaciones entre caracteres cuantitativos. Treinta y nueve accesiones pertenecientes a la colección de germoplasma de la Universidad de Passo Fundo fueron clonadas y luego evaluadas para 17 caracteres cuantitativos y 3 cualitativos. Los datos correspondientes a los caracteres cuantitativos fueron sometidos a análisis de varianza seguido por una prueba comparación de valores medios de Tukey (p<0,05); las correlaciones fueron analizadas utilizando el coeficiente de correlación de Pearson. Se observaron diferencias significativas para 9 de los 17 caracteres cuantitativos analizados y 10 de las 39 accesiones mostraron elevados valores para algunos de esos caracteres. Se observaron valores significativos de correlación entre varios caracteres y el rendimiento, lo que facilita la selección indirecta. Considerando los caracteres cualitativos, se seleccionaron nueve accesiones por presentar capítulo esférico, brácteas violetas y ausencia de espinas, las cuales son características deseables para el consumo en fresco.Fil: Reolon Costa, A.. Performance of the Electromagnetic Calorimeter of the HERMES Experiment
The performance of the electromagnetic calorimeter of the HERMES experiment
is described. The calorimeter consists of 840 radiation resistant F101
lead-glass counters. The response to positrons up to 27.5 GeV, the comparison
between the measured energy and the momentum reconstructed from tracking,
long-term stability, hadron rejection and neutral meson invariant mass

Quasi-elastic and inelastic inclusive electron scattering from an oxygen jet target
The results of an experiment on inclusive electron scattering from an oxygen
jet target, performed in a wide range of energy and momentum transfer covering
both quasi-elastic and (1232) resonance regions, are reported. In the
former region the theoretical predictions, obtained including effects of
nucleon-nucleon correlations in both initial and final states, give a good
description of the experimental data. In the inelastic region a broadening as
well as a damping of the resonant part of the cross section with respect to the
free nucleon case is observed. The need of more detailed calculations including
nuclear structure effects on the electroproduction cross section of nucleon

Beam-helicity asymmetries for single-hadron production in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering from unpolarized hydrogen and deuterium targets
A measurement of beam-helicity asymmetries for single-hadron production in
deep-inelastic scattering is presented. Data from the scattering of 27.6 GeV
electrons and positrons off gaseous hydrogen and deuterium targets were
collected by the HERMES experiment. The asymmetries are presented separately as
a function of the Bjorken scaling variable, the hadron transverse momentum, and
the fractional energy for charged pions and kaons as well as for protons and
anti-protons. These asymmetries are also presented as a function of the three
aforementioned kinematic variables simultaneously
Transverse-target-spin asymmetry in exclusive -meson electroproduction
Hard exclusive electroproduction of mesons is studied with the
HERMES spectrometer at the DESY laboratory by scattering 27.6 GeV positron and
electron beams off a transversely polarized hydrogen target. The amplitudes of
five azimuthal modulations of the single-spin asymmetry of the cross section
with respect to the transverse proton polarization are measured. They are
determined in the entire kinematic region as well as for two bins in photon
virtuality and momentum transfer to the nucleon. Also, a separation of
asymmetry amplitudes into longitudinal and transverse components is done. These
results are compared to a phenomenological model that includes the pion pole
contribution. Within this model, the data favor a positive

Longitudinal double-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of electrons and positrons by protons and deuterons
A comprehensive collection of results on longitudinal double-spin asymmetries is presented for charged pions and kaons produced in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of electrons and positrons on the proton and deuteron, based on the full HERMES data set. The dependence of the asymmetries on hadron transverse momentum and azimuthal angle extends the sensitivity to the flavor structure of the nucleon beyond the distribution functions accessible in the collinear framework. No strong dependence on those variables is observed. In addition, the hadron charge-difference asymmetry is presented, which under certain model assumptions provides access to the helicity distributions of valence quarks
Bose-Einstein correlations in hadron-pairs from lepto-production on nuclei ranging from hydrogen to xenon
Bose-Einstein correlations of like-sign charged hadrons produced in
deep-inelastic electron and positron scattering are studied in the HERMES
experiment using nuclear targets of H, H, He, He, N, Ne, Kr,
and Xe. A Gaussian approach is used to parametrize a two-particle correlation
function determined from events with at least two charged hadrons of the same
sign charge. This correlation function is compared to two different empirical
distributions that do not include the Bose-Einstein correlations. One
distribution is derived from unlike-sign hadron pairs, and the second is
derived from mixing like-sign pairs from different events. The extraction
procedure used simulations incorporating the experimental setup in order to
correct the results for spectrometer acceptance effects, and was tested using
the distribution of unlike-sign hadron pairs. Clear signals of Bose-Einstein
correlations for all target nuclei without a significant variation with the
nuclear target mass are found. Also, no evidence for a dependence on the
invariant mass W of the photon-nucleon system is found when the results are
compared to those of previous experiments
Flavor decomposition of the sea quark helicity distributions in the nucleon from semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering
Double-spin asymmetries of semi-inclusive cross sections for the production
of identified pions and kaons have been measured in deep-inelastic scattering
of polarized positrons on a polarized deuterium target. Five helicity
distributions including those for three sea quark flavors were extracted from
these data together with re-analyzed previous data for identified pions from a
hydrogen target. These distributions are consistent with zero for all three sea
flavors. A recently predicted flavor asymmetry in the polarization of the light
quark sea appears to be disfavored by the data.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Nuclear Polarization of Molecular Hydrogen Recombined on a Non-metallic Surface
The nuclear polarization of molecules formed by recombination
of nuclear polarized H atoms on the surface of a storage cell initially coated
with a silicon-based polymer has been measured by using the longitudinal
double-spin asymmetry in deep-inelastic positron-proton scattering. The
molecules are found to have a substantial nuclear polarization, which is
evidence that initially polarized atoms retain their nuclear polarization when
absorbed on this type of surfac
