    Líquenes epífitos: una herramienta para estudiar la continuidad ecológica en Isla Mocha, Chile

    The purpose of this work was to study the ecological continuity Mocha Island National Reserve, through the knowledge of the richness and frequency of epiphytic lichens in 14 plots distributed at random within the reserve. The tree biomass and upper-stem volume were quantified for to establish correlations that may explain the distribution of epiphytic lichens. It proposes a new index of ecological continuity with cyanolichens (ICEC) for to establish the degree of alteration of this natural ecosystem. The total richness of lichenized fungi was 33 species, 3 of which are new records for Chile: Fissurina triticea; Pyrenula neglecta and Stick, subcaperata. A statistically significant relationship was founded between cyanolichens and upper-stem volume, which could indicate preference of this type of lichens by forest ecosystem with a large upper-stem volume. In basis of the ICEC proposed in this work, Mocha Island National Reserve is defined as an altered ecosystem

    Alternative Reaction Pathways to Metformin Hydrochloride

    Metformin Hydrochloride is an important pharmaceutical used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. The current manufacturing of this product involves a well-known and proven process. The process includes the dissolution and reaction, followed by the precipitation of Metformin Hydrochloride. Although reliable and effective, the current process relies on the use of a solvent; which later needs to be eliminated from the precipitates. The purpose of this project is the investigation of an alternative reaction pathway which will avoid the use of solvents and simplify the final purification stage. The anticipated benefits include reduced costs for the processing and a final product which is closer to meet FDA and quality standards. These steps will eventually result in reducing the final market value of this important pharmaceutical. Preliminary experiments were conducted using micro and laboratory scale solvent-less reacting environments. These experiments allowed identifying the presence of a single chemical reaction. The characterization results suggest that the alternative pathway can successfully synthesize Metformin Hydrochloride.     Bose-Einstein Condensation of Helium and Hydrogen inside Bundles of Carbon Nanotubes

    Helium atoms or hydrogen molecules are believed to be strongly bound within the interstitial channels (between three carbon nanotubes) within a bundle of many nanotubes. The effects on adsorption of a nonuniform distribution of tubes are evaluated. The energy of a single particle state is the sum of a discrete transverse energy Et (that depends on the radii of neighboring tubes) and a quasicontinuous energy Ez of relatively free motion parallel to the axis of the tubes. At low temperature, the particles occupy the lowest energy states, the focus of this study. The transverse energy attains a global minimum value (Et=Emin) for radii near Rmin=9.95 Ang. for H2 and 8.48 Ang.for He-4. The density of states N(E) near the lowest energy is found to vary linearly above this threshold value, i.e. N(E) is proportional to (E-Emin). As a result, there occurs a Bose-Einstein condensation of the molecules into the channel with the lowest transverse energy. The transition is characterized approximately as that of a four dimensional gas, neglecting the interactions between the adsorbed particles. The phenomenon is observable, in principle, from a singular heat capacity. The existence of this transition depends on the sample having a relatively broad distribution of radii values that include some near Rmin.Comment: 21 pages, 9 figure

    Simple Model of Capillary Condensation in porous media

    We employ a simple model to describe the phase behavior of 4He and Ar in a hypothetical porous material consisting of a regular array of infinitely long, solid, parallel cylinders. We find that high porosity geometries exhibit two transitions: from vapor to film and from film to capillary condensed liquid. At low porosity, the film is replaced by a ``necking'' configuration, and for a range of intermediate porosity there are three transitions: from vapor to film, from film to necking and from necking to a capillary condensed phase.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure

The work of these authors is a good starting point to analyze some of the main characteristics of the contemporary Hispanic aphorism.Este artículo reflexiona sobre la escritura aforística a partir de una tríada de autores de gran relevancia para la evolución del género en los siglos XX y XXI: Antonio Machado, Antonio Porchia y José Bergamín. La obra de estos creadores supone un buen punto de partida para analizar algunas de las principales características del aforismo hispánico contemporáneo

    La comunidad online ha demostrado una asombrosa capacidad de aprovechamiento creativo de redes sociales como Facebook, Instagram o Twitter. En concreto, Twitter se ha mostrado mucho más activa y proclive a la práctica y experimentación con las formas breves. Si bien la limitación de caracteres determina tecnológicamente la brevedad, esta no responde únicamente a una motivación exógena, sino que posee una rica tradición literaria a la espalda. Por ello, este artículo abordará el estudio de la tuiteratura en relación con su realidad mediática y, también, con su inscripción genérica; asimismo, se hará hincapié en el «funcionamiento» de las formas breves en un entorno digital que nos obliga a revisar las posiciones auráticas e institucionales sobre el arte y la literatura.The online community has demonstrated an amazing capacity for creative use of social networks such as Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. Specifically, Twitter has been much more active and prone to practice and experimentation with brief literary forms. Although brevity is determined technologically by the limit of characters, this fact does not only respond to an exogenous motivation, but also there is a rich literary tradition behind it. Therefore, this paper will study the twitterature in relation to its media reality and, also, from its literary perspective; besides, I will focus on the "functioning" of digital literature to review the auratic and institutional positions on art and literature.La communauté en ligne a démontré une capacité étonnante d'utilisation créative de réseaux sociaux tels que Facebook, Instagram ou Twitter. Plus précisément, Twitter a été plus actif et enclin à pratiquer et à expérimenter avec des formes brèves. Bien que la limitation des caractères détermine technologiquement la brièveté, elle ne répond pas seulement à une motivation exogène, mais s'appuie également sur une riche tradition littéraire. Cet article traitera donc de l’étude de la twittérature en relation avec sa réalité médiatique et avec la question des genres littéraires ; de plus, l'accent sera mis sur le « fonctionnement » des formes brèves dans le cyberspace, qui nous oblige à revoir les positions des institutions sur l'art et la littérature
