She would be a new kind of female character-independent, exciting, and in charge of her own destiny. Nancy Drew acted on her own and survived to tell about it. She changed forever the way girls looked at themselves and their abilities. No longer would female characters have to sit on the sidelines and wait for the man to rescue them, Nancy rescued herself. This study looks at the evolution of Nancy Drew and the people who created her from 1930 to the present.     Symplectic No-core Shell-model Approach to Intermediate-mass Nuclei

    We present a microscopic description of nuclei in an intermediate-mass region, including the proximity to the proton drip line, based on a no-core shell model with a schematic many-nucleon long-range interaction with no parameter adjustments. The outcome confirms the essential role played by the symplectic symmetry to inform the interaction and the winnowing of shell-model spaces. We show that it is imperative that model spaces be expanded well beyond the current limits up through fifteen major shells to accommodate particle excitations that appear critical to highly-deformed spatial structures and the convergence of associated observables.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure

    Fractional-N Synthesizer Architectures with Digital Phase Detection.

    During the last decade there has been unprecedented growth in the use of portable wireless communications devices for applications as diverse as medical implants, industrial inventory control, and consumer electronics. If these communication devices are to be low power, flexible, and reconfigurable, new radio architectures are needed which take advantage of the major strength of state-of-the-art digital manufacturing processes; that is the ability to build large, complex low power signal processing circuits, with extremely fast clocking speeds. However, traditional radio architectures rely on analog techniques which are ill suited for the use in modern highly integrated digital systems. A critical component of a radio system is the frequency synthesizer, a circuit which can accurately synthesize and modulate high frequency signals. Traditional synthesizers still utilize a significant amount of analog circuitry. In this work, techniques are developed to replace this analog circuitry with digital equivalents. To do this, a digital phase detection scheme for a Fractional-N Phase Lock Loop (FPLL) is presented. The all-digital phase detector can be used as an alternative to a conventional analog-intensive phase detector, charge pump and loop filter blocks. Another limitation of traditional synthesizers is the difficulty in modulating the frequency of the output signal at speeds larger the FPLL’s bandwidth. A new technique is developed for modulating the output frequency of the FPLL at rates significantly faster than the loop bandwidth would typically allow. A digital sampling scheme that enables FSK modulation rates much larger than the loop bandwidth is demonstrated. The new scheme does not compromise on the frequency accuracy of the output signal. The key ideas presented have been proven in a proof of concept design. A prototype 2.2GHz fractional-N synthesizer, incorporating the digital phase detector and sampling scheme is presented as a proof of concept. Although the loop bandwidth is only 142kHz, an FSK modulation rate of 927.5kbs is achieved.     Insulin resistance in type 1 diabetes: what is ‘double diabetes’ and what are the risks?

    In this review, we explore the concept of ‘double diabetes’, a combination of type 1 diabetes with features of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. After considering whether double diabetes is a useful concept, we discuss potential mechanisms of increased insulin resistance in type 1 diabetes before examining the extent to which double diabetes might increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). We then go on to consider the proposal that weight gain from intensive insulin regimens may be associated with increased CV risk factors in some patients with type 1 diabetes, and explore the complex relationships between weight gain, insulin resistance, glycaemic control and CV outcome. Important comparisons and contrasts between type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes are highlighted in terms of hepatic fat, fat partitioning and lipid profile, and how these may differ between type 1 diabetic patients with and without double diabetes. In so doing, we hope this work will stimulate much-needed research in this area and an improvement in clinical practice

    Multi-Gene Expression Predictors of Single Drug Responses to Adjuvant Chemotherapy in Ovarian Carcinoma: Predicting Platinum Resistance

    Despite advances in radical surgery and chemotherapy delivery, ovarian cancer is the most lethal gynecologic malignancy. Standard therapy includes treatment with platinum-based combination chemotherapies yet there is no biomarker model to predict their responses to these agents. We here have developed and independently tested our multi-gene molecular predictors for forecasting patients' responses to individual drugs on a cohort of 55 ovarian cancer patients. To independently validate these molecular predictors, we performed microarray profiling on FFPE tumor samples of 55 ovarian cancer patients (UVA-55) treated with platinum-based adjuvant chemotherapy. Genome-wide chemosensitivity biomarkers were initially discovered from the in vitro drug activities and genomic expression data for carboplatin and paclitaxel, respectively. Multivariate predictors were trained with the cell line data and then evaluated with a historical patient cohort. For the UVA-55 cohort, the carboplatin, taxol, and combination predictors significantly stratified responder patients and non-responder patients (p = 0.019, 0.04, 0.014) with sensitivity = 91%, 96%, 93 and NPV = 57%, 67%, 67% in pathologic clinical response. The combination predictor also demonstrated a significant survival difference between predicted responders and non-responders with a median survival of 55.4 months vs. 32.1 months. Thus, COXEN single- and combination-drug predictors successfully stratified platinum resistance and taxane response in an independent cohort of ovarian cancer patients based on their FFPE tumor samples

    Complex problems require complex solutions: the utility of social quality theory for addressing the Social Determinants of Health

    Extent: 9p.Background: In order to improve the health of the most vulnerable groups in society, the WHO Commission on Social Determinants of Health (CSDH) called for multi-sectoral action, which requires research and policy on the multiple and inter-linking factors shaping health outcomes. Most conceptual tools available to researchers tend to focus on singular and specific social determinants of health (SDH) (e.g. social capital, empowerment, social inclusion). However, a new and innovative conceptual framework, known as social quality theory, facilitates a more complex and complete understanding of the SDH, with its focus on four domains: social cohesion, social inclusion, social empowerment and socioeconomic security, all within the same conceptual framework. This paper provides both an overview of social quality theory in addition to findings from a national survey of social quality in Australia, as a means of demonstrating the operationalisation of the theory. Methods: Data were collected using a national random postal survey of 1044 respondents in September, 2009. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted. Results: Statistical analysis revealed that people on lower incomes (less than $45000) experience worse social quality across all of the four domains: lower socio-economic security, lower levels of membership of organisations (lower social cohesion), higher levels of discrimination and less political action (lower social inclusion) and lower social empowerment. The findings were mixed in terms of age, with people over 65 years experiencing lower socio-economic security, but having higher levels of social cohesion, experiencing lower levels of discrimination (higher social inclusion) and engaging in more political action (higher social empowerment). In terms of gender, women had higher social cohesion than men, although also experienced more discrimination (lower social inclusion). Conclusions: Applying social quality theory allows researchers and policy makers to measure and respond to the multiple sources of oppression and advantage experienced by certain population groups, and to monitor the effectiveness of interventions over time.Paul R Ward, Samantha B Meyer, Fiona Verity, Tiffany K Gill and Tini CN Luon

    This study explores whether different religions experience different levels of happiness and life satisfaction and in case this is affected by country economic and cultural environment. Using World Value Survey (from 1981 to 2014), this study found that individual religiosity and country level of development play a significant role in shaping people’s subjective well-being (SWB). Protestants, Buddhists and Roman Catholic were happier and most satisfied with their lives compared to other religious groups. Orthodox has the lowest SWB. Health status, household’s financial satisfaction and freedom of choice are means by which religious groups and governments across the globe can improve the SWB of their citizens.
