Anxiety in situations where one’s overall appearance (including body shape) may be negatively evaluated is hypothesized to play a central role in Eating Disorders (EDs) and in their co-occurrence with Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). Three studies were conducted among community (N = 1995) and clinical (N = 703) ED samples of 11- to 18-year-old Italian girls and boys to (a) evaluate the psychometric qualities and measurement equivalence/invariance (ME/I) of the Social Appearance Anxiety (SAA) Scale (SAAS) and (b) determine to what extent SAA or other situational domains of social anxiety related to EDs distinguish adolescents with an ED only from those with SAD. Results upheld the one-factor structure and ME/I of the SAAS across samples, gender, age categories, and diagnostic status (i.e., ED participants with and without comorbid SAD). The SAAS demonstrated high internal consistency and 3-week test–retest reliability. The strength of the inter-relationships between SAAS and measures of body image, teasing about appearance, ED symptoms, depression, social anxiety, avoidance, and distress, as well as the ability of SAAS to discriminate community adolescents with high and low levels of ED symptoms and community participants from ED participants provided construct validity evidence. Only SAA strongly differentiated adolescents with any ED from those with comorbid SAD (23.2 %). Latent mean comparisons across all study groups were performed and discussed

Ethylene and rooting of mung bean cuttings. The role of auxin induced ethylene synthesis and phase-dependent effects

We have re-examined the role of ethylene during rooting of mung bean cuttings. Cuttings were treated for 5 days with a low or a high concentration of NAA (naphthaleneacetic acid). During this 5 days period, we also applied STS (silverthiosulfate, an inhibitor of ethylene action) or ACC (1-aminocyclo-propane-l-carboxylic acid, a direct precursor of ethylene). At high NAA concentration, STS promoted and ACC inhibited rooting, respectively. At low NAA concentration, the effects were opposite, STS being inhibitory and ACC promotive. AVG (aminoethoxyvinylglycine, an inhibitor of ethylene synthesis) gave similar results as STS. Together, these data suggest supraoptimal and suboptimal ethylene levels in the tissue at high and low NAA concentration, respectively. We also examined whether the effect of ethylene varied during the successive phases of the rooting process. Thus, we gave 24 h pulses with either STS or ACC during the rooting treatment. During the first two days (0-48 h), ACC-pulses were promotive and STS-pulses inhibitory. Later on (48-168 h), the ACC-pulses were inhibitory and the STS-pulses promotive. Whether this effect was observed or not was dependent on the NAA concentration. These data indicate that ethylene promotes or inhibits rooting depending on the stage in the rooting process. When ACC was added only during the initial period, rooting was increased at all NAA concentrations in a NAA dose-response curve and the optimal NAA concentration remained the same. This suggests that ethylene renders more cells responsive to NAA

GAS MANAGEMENT AS POSSIBLE SOLUTION FOR LONG-LIFE LI-ION BATTERIES

    Get PDF
This research work has been aimed at developing an innovative analytical methodology, useful to reveal gaseous side products within Li-ion cells. The analytical protocol is based on the coupling of infrared spectroscopy and electrochemical techniques. Experiments have been carried out on Full Li-ion cell under resting and operative conditions. The time evolution of the most relevant gaseous product (CO2) has been monitored, revealing the conditions during which its generation is induced. The analytical information have been used to project and develop a specific scavenger for CO2 adsorption. The scavenger has been configured in order to be complaint to battery requirements and its reliability has been proved, under battery condition, by the means of an absorption volumetric bench

Conceptual Design of the Coronagraphic High Angular Resolution Imaging Spectrograph (CHARIS) for the Subaru Telescope

Recent developments in high-contrast imaging techniques now make possible both imaging and spectroscopy of planets around nearby stars. We present the conceptual design of the Coronagraphic High Angular Resolution Imaging Spectrograph (CHARIS), a lenslet-based, cryogenic integral field spectrograph (IFS) for imaging exoplanets on the Subaru telescope. The IFS will provide spectral information for 140x140 spatial elements over a 1.75 arcsecs x 1.75 arcsecs field of view (FOV). CHARIS will operate in the near infrared (lambda = 0.9 - 2.5 microns) and provide a spectral resolution of R = 14, 33, and 65 in three separate observing modes. Taking advantage of the adaptive optics systems and advanced coronagraphs (AO188 and SCExAO) on the Subaru telescope, CHARIS will provide sufficient contrast to obtain spectra of young self-luminous Jupiter-mass exoplanets. CHARIS is in the early design phases and is projected to have first light by the end of 2015. We report here on the current conceptual design of CHARIS and the design challenges

Rapid iododeboronation with and without gold catalysis: application to radiolabelling of arenes

    Get PDF
Radiopharmaceuticals incorporating radioactive iodine in combination with SPECT imaging play a key role in nuclear medicine, with applications in drug development and disease diagnosis. Despite this importance, there are relatively few general methods for incorporating radioiodine into small molecules. Here we describe a rapid, air- and moisture-stable ipso-iododeboronation procedure using NIS, in the non-toxic and green solvent dimethyl carbonate. The fast reaction and mild conditions of the gold-catalysed method led to the development of a highly efficient process for radiolabelling of arenes, which constitutes the first example of an application of homogenous gold catalysis to selective radiosynthesis. This has been exemplified with an effective synthesis of radiolabelled meta-[125I]iodobenzylguanidine, a radiopharmaceutical used for the imaging and therapy of human norepinephrine transporter-expressing tumours

Verifying synonymies between grape cultivars from France and Northwestern Italy using molecular markers

    Get PDF
Thirty-one grape cultivars from France and Northwestern Italy, presumed to be synonymous, were analyzed using RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) and SSR (Simple Sequence Repeats or microsatellite) markers to verify 25 synonym hypotheses. RAPD analyses were performed with 8 selected decamer primers and the profiles of 7 microsatellite loci were used in order to confirm RAPD results, if required. Sixteen synonymies were confirmed, including the French cv. Verdesse with the Italian cv. Bian ver, the French cv. Persan with the Italian cv. Biquet, the French cv. Chatus with the Italian cv. Neiret, the French cv. Gouais blanc with the Italian cvs Preveiral and Liseiret. Most of the investigated cultivars belong to the Vitis vinifera germplasm of both sides of the Western Alps and the occurrence of synonyms indicates the existence of a common pool of grapes grown under different names in this part of Europe.
