    What Is the Environment Doing in My Report? Analyzing the Environment-as-Stakeholder Thesis through Corpus Linguistics

    This paper seeks to explore whether business organizations' claims to regard the natural environment as a stakeholder are consistent with the way in which the environment is represented in their corporate social responsibility reporting. It applies corpus linguistic methods to analyze statistical regularities and differences in the discursive construction of core stakeholders, such as customers and employees, and that of the natural environment. Results show that the representation of the environment is not characterized by the agency and capacity for engagement that characterizes other stakeholders. While organizations overtly acknowledge a duty toward the environment, the dominant lexical and grammatical patterns in which it is represented tend to obscure the organization's responsibilities and emphasize its mitigating actions instead. Although the argument for regarding the environment as a stakeholder is based on the fact that it places objective and compelling demands on our actions, we look in vain for recognition of such demands in organizational reporting

    Listeriosis en bovinos de la Provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina

    Se reali­zó un estudio retrospectivo de casos de listeriosis bovina ocurridos en diferentes partidos de Provincia de Buenos Aires (Argentina). Se utilizaron las técnicas diagnósticas de histopato­logía, bacteriología e inmunohistoquímica. De 17 casos confirmados por esta última técnica, en 7 de ellos se dispuso de material para el cultivo bacteriológico y solo en 3 casos se pudo aislar Listeria monocytogenes. El 64,7% de los casos de listeriosis se presentaron en rodeos que consumían ensilado de maíz. La enfermedad se diagnosticó con mayor frecuencia en sistemas de producción intensivos (feedlot y tambos). Cuatro casos negativos al cultivo de L. monocytogenes se lograron confirmar por inmunohistoquímica, por lo cual esta técnica se revela valiosa dado que su empleo mejora la eficiencia diagnóstica de los casos de listeriosis bovina

    A review of friction models in interacting joints for durability design.

    This paper presents a comprehensive review of friction modelling to provide an understanding of design for durability within interacting systems. Friction is a complex phenomenon and occurs at the interface of two components in relative motion. Over the last several decades, the effects of friction and its modelling techniques have been of significant interests in terms of industrial applications. There is however a need to develop a unified mathematical model for friction to inform design for durability within the context of varying operational conditions. Classical dynamic mechanisms model for the design of control systems has not incorporated friction phenomena due to non-linearity behaviour. Therefore, the tribological performance concurrently with the joint dynamics of a manipulator joint applied in hazardous environments needs to be fully analysed. Previously the dynamics and impact models used in mechanical joints with clearance have also been examined. The inclusion of reliability and durability during the design phase is very important for manipulators which are deployed in harsh environmental and operational conditions. The revolute joint is susceptible to failures such as in heavy manipulators these revolute joints can be represented by lubricated conformal sliding surfaces. The presence of pollutants such as debris and corrosive constituents has the potential to alter the contacting surfaces, would in turn affect the performance of revolute joints, and puts both reliability and durability of the systems at greater risks of failure. Key literature is identified and a review on the latest developments of the science of friction modelling is presented here. This review is based on a large volume of knowledge. Gaps in the relevant field have been identified to capitalise on for future developments. Therefore, this review will bring significant benefits to researchers, academics and industrial professionals

    Assessing social responsibility::A quantitative analysis of Appraisal in BP’s and IKEA’s social reports

    A growing public awareness of the potential negative impacts of corporate activities on the natural environment and society compels large companies to invest increasing resources in the communication of their responsible conduct. This article employs Appraisal theory in a comparative analysis of BP’s and IKEA’s 2009 social reports, each company’s record of their non-financial performance. The main objective is to explore how, through Appraisal resources, BP and IKEA construct their corporate identity and relationship with their stakeholders. The analysis reveals two markedly different approaches to the construction of a responsible corporate identity. While BP deploys interpersonal resources to portray itself as a trustworthy and authoritative expert, IKEA discloses itself as a sensitive and caring corporation, engaged in a continual effort to improve. These differences are interpreted in light of the legitimization challenges the two companies face

    The caudo-ventral pallium is a novel pallial domain expressing Gdf10 and generating Ebf3-positive neurons of the medial amygdala

    In rodents, the medial nucleus of the amygdala receives direct inputs from the accessory olfactory bulbs and is mainly implicated in pheromone-mediated reproductive and defensive behaviors. The principal neurons of the medial amygdala are GABAergic neurons generated principally in the caudo-ventral medial ganglionic eminence and preoptic area. Beside GABAergic neurons, the medial amygdala also contains glutamatergic Otp-expressing neurons cells generated in the lateral hypothalamic neuroepithelium and a non-well characterized Pax6-positive population. In the present work, we describe a novel glutamatergic Ebf3-expressing neuronal subpopulation distributed within the periphery of the postero-ventral medial amygdala. These neurons are generated in a pallial domain characterized by high expression of Gdf10. This territory is topologically the most caudal tier of the ventral pallium and accordingly, we named it Caudo-Ventral Pallium (CVP). In the absence of Pax6, the CVP is disrupted and Ebf3-expressing neurons fail to be generated.     Trust-building strategies in corporate discourse:An experimental study

    This paper presents a scenario-based experiment designed to test the effects of trust-building strategies, realised in stance-taking acts, which a previous corpus-based study found to be salient features of stakeholder-facing corporate communication. The experiment relies on a between-subjects design in which a target group of subjects are exposed to trust-building strategies while another control group are not. We apply this paradigm to corporate discourse in the form of an About Us webpage produced by a fictitious multinational pharmaceutical company that has been accused by a whistleblower of corporate misconduct. The results of the study show that these strategies are indeed effective in fostering trust in the company and have an indirect positive effect on the perceived credibility of the company’s denial in response to the allegations made by the whistleblower. The strategies are therefore able to mitigate the potential damage caused by public accusations of wrongdoing and help companies insure against future threats to their legitimacy and freedom to operate, as when their behaviour violates, or is said to violate, societal norms and values. Theoretically, the results provide insights into the psychological mechanisms of trust-building and reader response. Methodologically, the study contributes to the growing body of work using experimental methods in CDA by further demonstrating that experimentation can usefully complement more traditional discourse-analytical methods as a form of triangulation

    A computational and experimental investigation of turbulent jet and crossflow interaction

    The flowfield induced by a single circular jet exhausting perpendicularly from a flat plate into a crossflow has been investigated numerically. The flow regime investigated corresponds to that encountered in a modern gas-turbine combustor. Reynolds-averaged solutions were obtained using a pressure-based Navier-Stokes solver. The standard k - ε turbulence model with and without nonequilibrium modification was employed. Two different momentum flux ratios, J, between the jet and the free stream are investigated, namely, J = 34.2 and J = 42.2. To aid the evaluation of the computational capability, experimental information also has been obtained, including mean and root-mean-square (RMS) velocity distributions downstream of the jet, and the detailed velocity profile at the jet exit. An evaluation of the different convection schemes reveals that the second-order upwind scheme does a noticeably better job than the first-order scheme to predict the velocity profile at the jet exit while predicting less mixing than the experimental measurement during the jet and free stream interaction. It appears that turbulence modeling primarily is responsible for the deficiency the accounting for the physics of the jet and free stream interaction
