    Girls’ and women’s education within Unesco and the World Bank, 1945–2000

    By 2000, girls’ and women’s education was a priority for international development organisations. While studies have examined the impact of recent campaigns and programmes, there has been less exploration of ideas about girls’ and women’s education within development thought in the immediate post?colonial period, and the political mechanisms through which this came to be a global concern. Through a study of policy documents, this paper investigates how the education of girls and women came to be prioritised within the two principle UN agencies involved with education since 1945, the World Bank and Unesco. A shift in priorities is evident, from ensuring formal rights and improving the status of women, to expanding the productive capacities of women, fertility control and poverty reduction. While the ascendance of human capital theory provided a space for a new perception of the role of women’s education in development, in other policy arenas women’s education was central to exploring more substantive, rights?based notions of gender equality. Ultimately, the goal of improving girls’ and women’s education fitted into diverse development agendas, paving the way for it to become a global development priority

    Magnetic field exposure and long-term survival among children with leukaemia

    We examined the association between magnetic field (MF) exposure and survival among children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) treated at 51 Pediatric Oncology Group centres between 1996 and 2001. Of 1672 potentially eligible children under treatment, 482 (29%) participated and personal 24-h MF measurements were obtained from 412 participants. A total of 386 children with ALL and 361 with B-precursor ALL were included in the analysis of event-free survival (time from diagnosis to first treatment failure, relapse, secondary malignancy, or death) and overall survival. After adjustment for risk group and socioeconomic status, the event-free survival hazard ratio (HR) for children with measurements ⩾0.3 μT was 1.9 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.8, 4.9), compared to <0.1 μT. For survival, elevated HRs were found for children exposed to ⩾0.3 μT (multivariate HR=4.5, 95% CI 1.5–13.8) but based on only four deaths among 19 children. While risk was increased among children with exposures above 0.3 μT, the small numbers limited inferences for this finding

    Evolutionary continuous cellular automaton for the simulation of wet etching of quartz

    Anisotropic wet chemical etching of quartz is a bulk micromachining process for the fabrication of micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), such as resonators and temperature sensors. Despite the success of the continuous cellular automaton for the simulation of wet etching of silicon, the simulation of the same process for quartz has received little attention-especially from an atomistic perspective-resulting in a lack of accurate modeling tools. This paper analyzes the crystallographic structure of the main surface orientations of quartz and proposes a novel classification of the surface atoms as well as an evolutionary algorithm to determine suitable values for the corresponding atomistic removal rates. Not only does the presented evolutionary continuous cellular automaton reproduce the correct macroscopic etch rate distribution for quartz hemispheres, but it is also capable of performing fast and accurate 3D simulations of MEMS structures. This is shown by several comparisons between simulated and experimental results and, in particular, by a detailed, quantitative comparison for an extensive collection of trench profiles. © 2012 IOP Publishing Ltd.We are grateful to D Cheng and K Sato (Nagoya University, Japan) for providing part of the experimental data.     One life ends, another begins: Management of a brain-dead pregnant mother - A systematic review -

    Background: An accident or a catastrophic disease may occasionally lead to brain death (BD) during pregnancy. Management of brain-dead pregnant patients needs to follow special strategies to support the mother in a way that she can deliver a viable and healthy child and, whenever possible, also be an organ donor. This review discusses the management of brain-dead mothers and gives an overview of recommendations concerning the organ supporting therapy. Methods: To obtain information on brain-dead pregnant women, we performed a systematic review of Medline, EMBASE and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL). The collected data included the age of the mother, the cause of brain death, maternal medical complications, gestational age at BD, duration of extended life support, gestational age at delivery, indication of delivery, neonatal outcome, organ donation of the mothers and patient and graft outcome. Results: In our search of the literature, we found 30 cases reported between1982 and 2010. A nontraumatic brain injury was the cause of BD in 26 of 30 mothers. The maternal mean age at the time of BD was 26.5 years. The mean gestational age at the time of BD and the mean gestational age at delivery were 22 and 29.5 weeks, respectively. Twelve viable infants were born and survived the neonatal period. Conclusion: The management of a brain-dead pregnant woman requires a multidisciplinary team which should follow available standards, guidelines and recommendations both for a nontraumatic therapy of the fetus and for an organ-preserving treatment of the potential donor
