    Vertebral compression fractures managed with brace: risk factors for progression

    The aim of this study is to identify risk factors for vertebral compression fracture (VCF) progression in patients treated conservatively with a brace. Then, a case–control study was designed. All patients over 50 years old with diagnosis of thoracic or lumbar VCF (T5 to L5) in absence of underlying oncological process, treated conservatively with brace, and consecutively attended at our department from January 2017 to June 2021 were retrospectively selected for analysis. Patients missed for follow-up or dead during the frst 3 months of follow-up were excluded. Five hundred and eighty-two consecutive patients were recorded. Incomplete follow-up excluded 74 patients and other 19 died in the frst three months after diagnosis, so 489 cases were fnally analyzed. Median follow-up was 21 (IQR 13;30) weeks. Increased collapse of the vertebral body was found in 29.9% of VCFs with a median time to progression of 9 (IQR 7;13) weeks. Male gender (OR 1.6), type A3 fracture of the AOSpine classifcation (OR 2.7), thoracolumbar junction location (OR 1.7), and incorrect use of the brace (OR 3.5) were identifed as independent risk factors for progression after multivariable analysis. Male gender, type A3 fracture of the AOSpine classifcation, thoracolumbar junction location, and incorrect use of the brace were identifed as independent risk factors for VCF progression, which resulted in worse pain control, when treated with brace. Thus, other treatments such as percutaneous vertebral augmentation could be considered to avoid progression in selected cases, since collapse rate has been demonstrated lower with these procedure

    Planktonic stages of Processa macrodactyla (Decapoda: Caridea: Processidae) reared in the laboratory

    Two ovigerous females of the processid shrimp Processa macrodactyla were caught in April 1997 at 13 m depth in coastal waters of Rota, Cádiz Bay, south-western Spain (36°36′N 6°18′W). Rearing was terminated after nine zoeal stages, when larvae moulted to the first juvenile instar. Descriptions of the appendages of every instar have been made so as to: (1) compare the larval morphology with that of other previous described known species in the genus Processa (P. canaliculata, P. edulis, P. elegantula, P. modica, P. nouveli); and (2) with those larvae not ascribed to a certain species in order to facilitate the specific identification of unknown collected planktonic larvae. When describing P. macrodactyla some characters remained, with few exceptions, invariable in their setation form ZI to ZIV or ZV, to then change and maintain until the last zoeal stage. This can be due to intermediate moults, with the result that some larvae unite the characters of Stages ZIV and ZV and others those of ZV and ZVI

    Tunable entanglement distillation of spatially correlated down-converted photons

    We report on a new technique for entanglement distillation of the bipartite continuous variable state of spatially correlated photons generated in the spontaneous parametric down-conversion process (SPDC), where tunable non-Gaussian operations are implemented and the post-processed entanglement is certified in real-time using a single-photon sensitive electron multiplying CCD (EMCCD) camera. The local operations are performed using non-Gaussian filters modulated into a programmable spatial light modulator and, by using the EMCCD camera for actively recording the probability distributions of the twin-photons, one has fine control of the Schmidt number of the distilled state. We show that even simple non-Gaussian filters can be finely tuned to a ~67% net gain of the initial entanglement generated in the SPDC process.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure

This approach is called CICA GRID and it provides service to research community in the Scientific Computer Centre of Andalusia (CICA). This approach is an alternative solution to the initial cost involved in building an own data center by public organizations for researches. This solution quickly provides resources with a minimal technical staff effort. Also, an architecture and user interface example called ReCarta was presented.     Synthesis and characterization of titanium-vanadium ternary nitride (TixV1-xN).

    En el presente trabajo se aborda la síntesis del nitruro ternario de titanio y vanadio por reducción carbotérmica de una mezcla de óxidos o bien por nitruración directa de la mezcla de metales, en todo el rango de composiciones empleando el método de análisis térmico a velocidad controlada (ATVC). La caracterización de los productos obtenidos se ha llevado a cabo mediante difracción de rayos-X y microscopia electrónica. El empleo de la técnica EELS ha mostrado su capacidad para la cuantificación de este tipo de materiales, así como la utilización de la técnica espectroscópica XAS nos ha servido para corroborar los datos obtenidos a partir de los diagramas de difracción de rayos-X sobre distancias de enlace, número de coordinación y grado de desorden, esto último no detectado por las otras técnicas usadas en la caracterización de los productos. Los valores de microdureza registrados para las muestras sintetizadas se encuentran dentro del rango de valores reportados para este tipo de materiales.Titanium-Vanadium nitride (TiVN) has been prepared from carbothermal reduction of corresponding oxides and also by direct nitridation of a mix of two metals employing the ATVC method.     Exploring the effect of soil management intensity on taxonomic and functional diversity of ants in Mediterranean olive groves

    Agricultural intensification is one of the major drivers behind biodiversity loss in Mediterranean agroecosystems. The intensification of olive groves as monoculture in large areas of the southern Spain has had important effects on biodiversity and ecological processes. In the present study, we explore the olive grove soil management practices effects on taxonomic and functional diversity of ants along a gradient of soil management intensity. We predict that both species richness and functional diversity decrease with an increasing intensification of olive grove soil management. We used pitfall traps to sample ants in 24 olive groves subject to different soil management regimes in southern Spain, and then compared ant species richness and functional diversity (FD). Nonploughed organic farms showed higher species richness. Ploughing was observed to be the soil management practice with the greatest negative effect on ant species richness. Three functional traits significantly responded to soil management intensity, with tibia length and head width showing a higher FD in organic farms and diet showing a lower FD in ploughed farms. The results of the present study highlight the negative effects of olive grove ploughing on ant biodiversity and provide novel evidence of the nonploughing organic farming role with respect to maintaining higher levels of ant functional diversityFinancial support was received from the Spanish Ministryof Economy and Competitiveness (Project CGL2014-53782-P

    Low-pH cement mortar-bentonite perturbations in a small-scale pilot laboratory experiment

Such interfaces will prevail in engineered barrier systems used for isolation of nuclear waste. With the goal of optimizing the experimental method, this work has analysed the geochemical interaction of distilled water, low-pH cement mortar and FEBEX-bentonite for 75 days. Limited but evident reactivity between the materials was observed, mainly decalcification in cement mortar, carbonation at the interface with bentonite and Mg enrichment in bentonite.     Framing Public Participation. An Overview of Michoacan State Government

    Since 2015, local governments of 30 Mexican states have joined the National Open Government Partnership to enhance openness through mechanisms of transparency, accountability and citizen participation. The objective of this paper is to analyze the frameworks promoted by the State Government of Michoacán on public participation since the adoption of an open government policy. To achieve the objective, press releases from the Michoacán State Government’s page were collected and subsequently examined through aframing analysis. Findings indicate that this subnational government has framed public participation in two ways: as a democratic advance and as a transfer of responsibilities to citizens. At the same time, there is a recognition of new public and private actors sharing public decisions with the government. Despite the progress found in this subnational context, the authors warn of serious risks due to the absence of clear rules for the implementation of mechanisms for public participation.Desde 2015, los gobiernos de 30 entidades federativas en México se adhirieron a la iniciativa nacional de Gobierno Abierto para impulsar la apertura del Estado mediante mecanismos de transparencia, rendición de cuentas y participación pública. El objetivo de este artículo es analizar los marcos promovidos por el Gobierno del estado de Michoacán sobre la participación pública a partir de la adopción de una política de Gobierno Abierto. Para lograr el objetivo, se recopilaron los comunicados de prensa emitidos por este gobierno y, posteriormente, se examinaron mediante un análisis de encuadre. Los resultados indican que el gobierno de Michoacán enmarcó la participación pública en dos sentidos: como un avance democrático y como una transferencia de responsabilidades hacia los ciudadanos. A su vez, se reconocieron nuevos actores públicos. A pesar de los avances encontrados, los autores advierten la presencia de riesgos derivados de la ausencia de reglas para la participación pública
