Growth-promoting effects of sustained swimming in fingerlings of gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata L.)
Fish growth is strongly influenced by environmental and nutritional factors and changing culture conditions can help optimize it. The importance of early-life experience on the muscle phenotype later in life is well known. Here, we study the effects of 5 weeks of moderate and sustained swimming activity (5 BL s) in gilthead sea bream during early development. We analysed growth and body indexes, plasma IGF-I and GH levels, feed conversion, composition [proximate and isotopic (N/C)] and metabolic key enzymes (COX, CS, LDH, HOAD, HK, ALAT, ASAT) of white muscle. Moderate and continuous exercise in fingerlings of gilthead sea bream increased plasma IGF-I, whereas it reduced plasma GH. Under these conditions, growth rate improved without any modification to feed intake through an increase in muscle mass and a reduction in mesenteric fat deposits. There were no changes in the content and turnover of muscle proteins and lipid reserves. Glycogen stores were maintained, but glycogen turnover was higher in white muscle of exercised fish. A lower LDH/CS ratio demonstrated an improvement in the aerobic capacity of white muscle, while a reduction in the COX/CS ratio possibly indicated a functional adaptation of mitochondria to adjust to the tissue-specific energy demand and metabolic fuel availability in exercised fish. Bases psicobiológicas de la adicción a cocaína
El principal mecanismo de acción de la cocaína es la inhibición de la recaptación de dopamina y noradrenalina, produciendo un aumento de estos neurotransmisores en la sinapsis. El consumo agudo de cocaína produce una serie de cambios bastante conocidos en el sistema cerebral de recompensa. Sin embargo, el consumo crónico, produce, además, otra serie de cambios a nivel molecular que llevan al sujeto desde una situación de consumo puntual, a una situación de dependencia. Se han propuesto diferentes teorías explicativas de este fenómeno como la sensibilización del incentivo, o la homeostasis y alostasis neuroquímica, planteamientos basados en el condicionamiento clásico y operante. Por otra parte, se ha señalado la intervención de diferentes moléculas y vías de segundos mensajeros, que producen, en última instancia, una serie de cambios neuronales mantenidos a muy largo plazo, probablemente permanentes, que se podrían relacionar con la vulnerabilidad a las recaídas, propia de la adicción a cocaína, incluso años después de abandonar el consumo
Application of Drought Management Guidelines in Spain
The Spanish case study presents the drought planning process carried in the Tagus Basin. The presentation is structured in four parts: organizational, methodological, operational and public review components. The organizational component presents the framework and specific legislations and the organizations and institutions in Spain that work on drought preparedness and mitigation. The methodological component presents the analytical techniques used for drought risk analysis and management. The operational component describes the proposed structure for the drought management plan and presents the specific actions that are contemplated in it. The process review component identifies stakeholders that are involved in the decision making process and presents their views on the process
Fractura-luxación posterior de hombro tratada mediante la técnica de McLaughlin
Se presenta un caso de luxación posterior de hombro, con fractura por impactación
de la cabeza humeral, ocasionada por crisis convulsivas. Estas lesiones no son fáciles de reconocer
en los primeros momentos, y en nuestro caso se precisó de un estudio radiográfico en distintas
proyecciones y una TAC. Se realizó tratamiento quirúrgico mediante la técnica original de
McLaughlin. A los 7 meses de la intervención el paciente ha recuperado casi totalmente la movilidad

Providing Collaborative Support to Virtual and Remote Laboratories
Virtual and remote laboratories (VRLs) are e-learning resources that enhance the accessibility of experimental setups providing a distance teaching framework which meets the student's hands-on learning needs. In addition, online collaborative communication represents a practical and a constructivist method to transmit the knowledge and experience from the teacher to students, overcoming physical distance and isolation. This paper describes the extension of two open source tools: (1) the learning management system Moodle, and (2) the tool to create VRLs Easy Java Simulations (EJS). Our extension provides: (1) synchronous collaborative support to any VRL developed with EJS (i.e., any existing VRL written in EJS can be automatically converted into a collaborative lab with no cost), and (2) support to deploy synchronous collaborative VRLs into Moodle. Using our approach students and/or teachers can invite other users enrolled in a Moodle course to a real-time collaborative experimental session, sharing and/or supervising experiences at the same time they practice and explore experiments using VRLs.This work was supported by the Spanish Government under the CICYT Project DPI2007-61068 and the GITE grant of the Technology and Educational Innovation Vice-President Office of the University of Alicante
New symmetrical quinazoline derivatives selectively induce apoptosis in human cancer cells
In the search of new symmetrical derivatives with anticancer activity, we have looked for novel compounds able to induce a selective proapoptotic mechanism in cancer cells. The potential antitumoral activity of several quinazoline derivatives was evaluated in vitro examining their cytotoxic effects against human breast, colon and bladder cancer cell lines. The IC(50) value of the compounds that showed cytotoxic activity was calculated. These compounds were tested for their ability to induce caspase-3 activation and nuclear chromatin degradation. Non-tumoral human cell lines were used to test the selectivity of the cytotoxic compounds against cancer cells. Several compounds showed no cytotoxicity in these cell lines. Finally, JRF12 (2,4-dibenzylaminoquinazoline) was chosen as the best candidate and its mechanism of action was studied in more detail. A time dependent evaluation of apoptosis was performed in the three cancer cell lines, followed by an evaluation of the cell cycle regulation involvement that showed a decrease of cells in G(1) phase and increase of cells in G(2) phase before cell death. 2,4-dibenzylaminoquinazoline treatment produces few changes in the expression of genes as evaluated by using oligonucleotide microarrays and Q-RT-PCR assays. In conclusion, 2,4-dibenzylaminoquinazoline is a promising anticancer drug showing cytostatic and apoptotic effects mainly in a transcription independent manner
Phase I clinical and pharmacokinetic study of PM01183 (a tetrahydroisoquinoline, Lurbinectedin) in combination with gemcitabine in patients with advanced solid tumors
Background To determine the recommended dose (RD) of a combination of PM01183 and gemcitabine in patients with advanced solid tumors. Methods Forty-five patients received escalating doses of PM01183/gemcitabine on Days 1 and 8 every 3 weeks (d1,8 q3wk) following a standard 3 + 3 design. Results PM01183 3.5 mg flat dose (FD)/gemcitabine 1000 mg/m(2) was the highest dose level tested. Dose-limiting toxicities (DLTs) were mostly hematological and resulted in the expansion of a lower dose level (PM01183 3.5 mg FD/gemcitabine 800 mg/m(2)); 19 patients at this dose level were evaluable but >30% had DLT and >20% had febrile neutropenia. No DLT was observed in 11 patients treated at PM01183 3.0 mg FD/gemcitabine 800 mg/m(2), which was defined as the RD. This regimen was feasible and tolerable with manageable toxicity; mainly grade 3/4 myelosuppression. Non-hematological toxicity comprised fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and transaminases increases. Fifteen (33%) patients received ≥6 cycles with no cumulative hematological toxicity. Pharmacokinetic analysis showed no evidence of drug-drug interaction. Nine of 38 patients had response as per RECIST (complete [3%] and partial [21%]), for an overall response rate (ORR) of 24% (95% Confidence Interval [CI] 12-40%). Eleven patients (29%) had disease stabilization ≥4 months. Responses were durable (median of 8.5 months): overall median progression-free survival (PFS) was 4.2 months (95% CI, 2.7-6.5 months). Conclusions The RD for this combination is PM01183 3.0 mg FD (or 1.6 mg/m(2))/gemcitabine 800 mg/m(2) d1,8 q3wk. This schedule is well tolerated and has antitumor activity in several advanced solid tumor types
Occupational exposure to nano-TiO2 in the life cycle steps of new depollutant mortars used in construction
The present work is focused on the measurement of workers exposure to nano-TiO2
in the life cycle steps of depollutant mortars. It has been done in the framework of the
SCAFFOLD project, which aims at the management of potential risks arising from the use of
manufactured nanomaterials in construction. Main findings can be summarized as follows: (1)
The occupational exposure to nano- TiO2 is below 0.3 mg/m3 for all measured scenarios. The
highest concentrations were measured during the cleaning task (in the nano- TiO2
manufacturing process) and during the application (spraying) of depollutant coatings on a wall.
(2) It was found a high release of particles above the background in several tasks as expected
due to the nature of the activities performed. The maximum concentration was measured
during drilling and during adding powder materials (mean total particle concentration up to
5.591E+04 particles/cm3 and 5.69E+04 particles/cm3). However, considering data on total
particle concentration released, no striking differences have been observed when tasks have
been performed using conventional materials in the sector (control) and when using materials

The Recruitment Agent in Internationalized Higher Education: Commercial Broker and Cultural Mediator
The internationalization and marketization of higher education has resulted in U.K. universities’ increasing reliance on recruitment agents to boost international student numbers. This places agents and agencies in a position of considerable influence with regard to the educational choices that students make. These institutional and individual relationships have been investigated from a marketing perspective, contributing knowledge about the influence of recruitment agents on student decision making. However, this approach has limitations with regard to understanding the impact of agents on an international student’s subsequent experience in U.K. higher education. The article suggests that theoretical work on mobility, migration, and ethnographies of communication, including the geopolitics of text production, can provide useful lenses for analyzing how agents help international students navigate the journey into and through U.K. higher education. The notion of “cultural mediator” is introduced to analyze the role played by agents alongside that of commercial broker. We argue that future research, shaped by these alternative theoretical perspectives, may help to bridge the apparent gap in understanding between those working in international offices and those involved in teaching in an internationalized university
Composite Films of Arabinoxylan and Fibrous Sepiolite: Morphological, Mechanical, and Barrier Properties
Hemicelluloses represent a largely unutilized resource for future bioderived films in packaging and other applications. However, improvement of film properties is needed in order to transfer this potential into reality. In this context, sepiolite, a fibrous clay, was investigated as an additive to enhance the properties of rye flour arabinoxylan. Composite films cast from arabinoxylan solutions and sepiolite suspensions in water were transparent or semitransparent at additive loadings in the 2.5-10 wt % range. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the sepiolite was well dispersed in the arabinoxylan films and sepiolite fiber aggregation was not found. FT-IR spectroscopy provided some evidence for hydrogen bonding between sepiolite and arabinoxylan. Consistent with these findings, mechanical testing showed increases in film stiffness and strength with sepiolite addition and the effect of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether (mPEG) plasticizer addition. Incorporation of sepiolite did not significantly influence the thermal degradation or the gas barrier properties of arabinoxylan films, which is likely a consequence of sepiolite fiber morphology. In summary, sepiolite was shown to have potential as an additive to obtain stronger hemicellulose films although other approaches, possibly in combination with the use of sepiolite, would be needed if enhanced film barrier properties are required for specific applications.</p
