No Fairy Godmothers: Essays on Life, Love, and Feminism
Heterosexual romance and marriage are institutionalized ideals in our society, set forth, in part, through the portrayal of stereotyped gender roles in fairy tales, such as Cinderella, and by the mainstream media. This thesis explores the cultural messages aimed at women, which impose the necessity of altering oneself to achieve marriage, and offers feminist viewpoints. Using the form of the personal essay, I discuss the ideals of Cinderella, Prince Charming, marriage, and Happily Ever After as unrealistic, though still prevalent, given the popularity of books like The Rules: Time-tested Secrets for Capturing the Heart of Mr. Right, and Princess Diana as Cinderella icon. Essays on my own experience of marriage and divorce supplement the cultural issues, juxtaposing the personal and political toward a new paradigm for relationships

Use of an Integrated Pest Management Assessment Administered Through TurningPoint as an Educational, Needs Assessment, and Evaluation Tool
University of Minnesota educators use an integrated pest management (IPM) survey conducted during private pesticide applicator training as an educational, needs assessment, and evaluation tool. By incorporating the IPM Assessment, as the survey is called, into a widely attended program and using TurningPoint audience response devices, Extension educators can gather information from a significant number of farmers in a timely and efficient manner. Interspersing TurningPoint questions throughout presentations also increases audience engagement and overall quality of the training. For example, weed management programming efforts around herbicide-resistance management have been significantly influenced and enhanced by results of the IPM Assessment

GAFF-IC: realistic viscosities for isocyanate molecules with a GAFF-based force field
Aliphatic diisocyanates and their derivatives are key liquid components in the industrial processing of polyurethane materials. In particular, for the synthesis of crosslinked polyurethane materials, the higher functionality molecules obtained by reacting three -or more- diisocyanates are of interest. However, despite their widespread application, the relation between molecular structure and macroscopic physical properties, in particular viscosity, is poorly understood in these systems. In this work, we introduce a new force field parameter set, GAFF-IC, based on the widely-used and versatile GAFF force field, meant for accurate predictions of physical properties of isocyanate-based molecular liquids. The new parameters allow to predict the vaporization enthalpies and densities of several isocyanate-based molecules, which are found in excellent agreement with the available experimental data. The effectiveness and transferability of the improved parameters is verified by calculating the viscosities of several isocyanates, isocyanate dimers (uretdiones) and isocyanate trimers (isocyanurates), resulting in accurate viscosity predictions in excellent agreement with experimental values. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under the Marie Sk lodowska-Curie Grant Agreement no. 642890 (http://thelink-project.eu/) and it was partially supported by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) in the framework of the Strategic Funding UID/FIS/04650/2013, and by the project ”Search-ON2: Revitalization of HPC infrastructure of Uminho” (NORTE-07-0162-FEDER-0000869), under the National Strategic Reference Framework, through the European Regional Development Fun
Field Effect Transistors for Terahertz Detection: Physics and First Imaging Applications
Resonant frequencies of the two-dimensional plasma in FETs increase with the
reduction of the channel dimensions and can reach the THz range for sub-micron
gate lengths. Nonlinear properties of the electron plasma in the transistor
channel can be used for the detection and mixing of THz frequencies. At
cryogenic temperatures resonant and gate voltage tunable detection related to
plasma waves resonances, is observed. At room temperature, when plasma
oscillations are overdamped, the FET can operate as an efficient broadband THz
detector. We present the main theoretical and experimental results on THz
detection by FETs in the context of their possible application for THz imaging.Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures, review pape
Coherent imaging using laser feedback interferometry with pulsed-mode terahertz quantum cascade lasers
We report a coherent terahertz (THz) imaging system that utilises a quantum cascade laser (QCL) operating in pulsed-mode as both the source and detector. The realisation of a short-pulsed THz QCL feedback interferometer permits both high peak powers and improved thermal efficiency, which enables the cryogen-free operation of the system. In this work, we demonstrated pulsed-mode swept-frequency laser feedback interferometry experimentally. Our interferometric detection scheme not only permits the simultaneous creation of both amplitude and phase images, but inherently suppresses unwanted background radiation. We demonstrate that the proposed system utilising microsecond pulses has the potential to achieve 0.25 mega-pixel per second acquisition rates, paving the pathway to video frame rate THz imaging
