Explosion of smoothness for conjugacies between multimodal maps

Let ff and gg be smooth multimodal maps with no periodic attractors and no neutral points. If a topological conjugacy hh between ff and gg is C1C^{1} at a point in the nearby expanding set of ff, then hh is a smooth diffeomorphism in the basin of attraction of a renormalization interval of ff. In particular, if f:IIf:I \to I and g:JJg:J \to J are CrC^r unimodal maps and hh is C1C^{1} at a boundary of II then hh is CrC^r in II.Comment: 22 page

Relating approach-to-target and detection tasks in animal psychoacoustics

Psychophysical experiments seek to measure the limits of perception. While straightforward in humans, in animals they are time consuming. Choosing an appropriate task and interpreting measurements can be challenging. We investigated the localization of high-frequency auditory signals in noise using an “approach-to-target” task in ferrets, how task performance should be interpreted in terms of perception, and how the measurements relate to other types of tasks. To establish their general ability to localize, animals were first trained to discriminate broadband noise from 12 locations. Subsequently we tested their ability to discriminate between band-limited targets at 2 or 3 more widely spaced locations, in a continuous background noise. The ability to discriminate between 3 possible locations (−90°, 0°, 90°) of a 10-kHz pure tone decreased gradually over a wide range (>30 dB) of signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). Location discrimination ability was better for wide band noise targets (0.5 and 2 octave). These results were consistent with localization ability limiting performance for pure tones. Discrimination of pure tones at 2 locations (−90/left, 90/right) was robust at positive SNRs, yielding psychometric functions which fell steeply at negative SNRs. Thresholds for discrimination were similar to previous tone-in-noise thresholds measured in ferrets using a yes/no task. Thus, using an approach-to-target task, sound “localization” in noise can reflect detectability or the ability to localize, depending on the stimulus configuration. Signal-detection-theory-based models were able to account for the results when discriminating between pure tones from 2- and 3-source locations

Microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion behaviour of Ti6Al4V/Al2O3 joints brazed with TiCuNi filler

Ti6Al4V and Al2O3 were successfully vacuum brazed at 980 °C using TiCuNi filler foil. The microstructure and the chemical composition of the interface were analysed by SEM (scanning electron microscopy) and EDS (energy dispersive spectros- copy), respectively. The hardness profile across the interface and the mechanical strength of joints were assessed by Vickers microhardness tests and shear tests, respectively. The fracture surfaces were analysed by SEM, EDS and XRD (X-ray dif- fraction). The corrosion behaviour of joints was evaluated by OCP (open circuit potential), potentiodynamic polarisation tests and EIS (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy). Brazing produced a layered interface, free of pores and cracks, essentially composed of α-Ti, Ti2(Cu,Ni) and TixOy. The shear strength of joints was 168 ± 13 MPa, and fracture occurred partially through the hardest zone of the interface (1261 HV0.01.), located in the vicinity of the Al2O3 sample, and partially through the ceramic sample. The brazed joint did not significantly affect the corrosion behaviour of Ti6Al4V.This work was supported by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), Portugal, under PTDC/CTM-CTM/31579/2017—POCI-01–0145-FEDER – 031579 – funded by FEDER funds through COMPETE2020—Programa Operacional Competitividade e Internacionalização (POCI) and by national funds (PIDDAC) through FCT/MCTES

Tribocorrosion behavior of bio-functionalized highly porous titanium

Titanium and its alloys are widely used in orthopedic and dental implants, however, some major clinical concerns such as poor wear resistance, lack of bioactivity, and bone resorption due to stress shielding are yet to be overcome. In order to improve these drawbacks, highly porous Ti samples having functionalized surfaces were developed by powder metallurgy with space holder technique followed by anodic treatment. Tribocorrosion tests were performed in 9 g/L NaCl solution using a unidirectional pin-on-disc tribometer under 3 N normal load, 1 Hz frequency and 4 mm track diameter. Open circuit potential (OCP) was measured before, during and after sliding. Worn surfaces investigated by field emission gun scanning electron microscope (FEG-SEM) equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Results suggested bio-functionalized highly porous samples presented lower tendency to corrosion under sliding against zirconia pin, mainly due to the load carrying effect given by the hard protruded oxide surfaces formed by the anodic treatment. This study was supported by FCT with the reference project UID/EEA/04436/2013, by FEDER funds through the COMPETE 2020 - Programa Operacional Competitividade e Internacionalizacao (POCI) with the reference project POCI-01-0145-FEDER-006941, Programa de Accoes Universitarias Integradas Luso-Francesas' (PAUILF TC-12_14), and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation through "Programa de Mobilidade Academica para Professores". A Standardized Classification for Subdural Hematomas- I

    Get PDF
Subdural hematomas are a frequent and highly heterogeneous traumatic disorder, with significant clinical and socioeconomic consequences. In clinical and medicolegal practice, subdural hematomas are classified according to its apparent age, which significantly influences its intrinsic pathogenic behavior, forensic implications, clinical management, and outcome. Although practical, this empirical classification is somewhat arbitrary and scarcely informative, considering the remarkable heterogeneity of this entity. The current research project aims at implementing a comprehensive multifactorial classification of subdural hematomas, allowing a more standardized and coherent assessment and management of this condition. This new method of classification of subdural hematomas takes into account its intrinsic and extrinsic features, using imaging data and histopathological elements, to provide an easily apprehensible and intuitive nomenclature. The proposed classification unifies and organizes all relevant details concerning subdural hematomas, hopefully improving surgical care and forensic systematization

Ti and its alloys are attractive materials for variety of fields, including biomedical implants, however, the wear behavior is yet to be improved. In the present work, Ti-TiB-TiNx in-situ metal matrix composites were synthesized by reactive hot pressing using a Ti-BN powder blend. Corrosion behavior was investigated in 9 g/L NaCl solution at 37 degrees C by performing potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Tribocorrosion behavior was investigated using reciprocating tribometer, against an alumina ball, under 1 and 10 N normal load, 1 and 2 Hz frequency, in 9 g/L NaCl solution at 37 degrees C. Results suggested that TiB and TiNx in situ phases did not deteriorate the corrosion behavior of Ti but significantly improved the tribocorrosion behavior under 1 N.This study was supported by The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation through "Programa de Mobilidade Academica para Professores" and FCT with the reference project UID/EEA/04436/2013, by FEDER funds through the COMPETE 2020 - Programa Operacional Competitividade e Internacionalizacao (POCI) with the reference project POCI-01-0145-FEDER-006941. Effects of substituting ytterbium for scandium on corrosion behaviour of Al-Sc alloy

    Get PDF
The localized corrosion and electrochemical behaviour of Al-0.28 wt.% Sc and Al-0.24 wt.% Sc-0.07 wt.% Yb alloys have been studied in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. The results showed that the impurity intermetallic phases containing Fe can act as cathodes and promote localized corrosion in the surrounding matrix. Yb had strong effect on the polarization behaviour in the anodic domain of Al-Sc alloy by improving the pitting corrosion resistance of this alloy. It has been deduced that a high number density of fully coherent nano-sized Al3Sc or Al-3(Sc, Yb) precipitates in heat treated alloys can enhance the passivation tendency of these alloys. This research was supported by The Project Bridging The Gap, funded by the Erasmus Mundus External Cooperation Window Program. Uveíte, Sífilis e SIDA

    Get PDF
