Explaining Small-Business Development: A Small-Business Development Model Combining the Maslow and the Hayes and Wheelwright Models
This paper looks at small-business management from the standpoint of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and Hayes and Wheelwright’s four-stage model. The paper adapts Maslow’s hierarchy of needs model to small- business development and evolution. Additionally, Hayes and Wheelwright’s four-stage model is combined with the adapted Maslow small-business development model. The implications of the new model on the development of small businesses and future research are discussed
Accessing transversity via J/Psi production in polarized p-pbar interactions
We discuss the possibility of a direct access to transversity distributions
by measuring the double transverse spin asymmetry A_TT in p pbar --> J/Psi + X
--> l^- l^+ + X processes at future GSI-HESR experiments with polarized protons
and anti-protons. In the J/Psi resonance production region, with 30 < s < 45
GeV^2, both the cross-section and A_TT are expected to be sufficiently large to
allow a measurement of h_1^q(x,M^2); numerical estimates are given.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures. Version accepted for publication in PLB;

Energy's and amplitudes' positivity
In QFT, the null energy condition (NEC) for a classical field configuration
is usually associated with that configuration's stability against small
perturbations, and with the sub-luminality of these. Here, we exhibit an
effective field theory that allows for stable NEC-violating solutions with
exactly luminal excitations only. The model is the recently introduced
`galileon', or more precisely its conformally invariant version. We show that
the theory's low-energy S-matrix obeys standard positivity as implied by
dispersion relations. However we also show that if the relevant NEC-violating
solution is inside the effective theory, then other (generic) solutions allow
for superluminal signal propagation. While the usual association between
sub-luminality and positivity is not obeyed by our example, that between NEC
and sub-luminality is, albeit in a less direct way than usual.Comment: 21 pages. v2: Typos in eq. (2.41) and (2.41) corrected; discussion of

Far-infrared vibrational properties of linear C60 polymers: A comparison between neutral and charged materials
We report the far-infrared transmittance spectrum of a pure phase of the orthorhombic high-temperature and high-pressure C-60 polymer and compare the results with a previously published spectrum of the charged RbC60 orthorhombic polymer. Assignments for both spectra are made with the aid of first-principles quantum molecular dynamics simulations of the two materials. We find that the striking spectral differences between the neutral and charged linear fullerene polymers can be fully accounted for by charge effects on the C-60 ball
Nuclear parton distribution functions and their uncertainties
We analyze experimental data of nuclear structure-function ratios
F_2^A/F_2^{A'} and Drell-Yan cross section ratios for obtaining optimum parton
distribution functions (PDFs) in nuclei. Then, uncertainties of the nuclear
PDFs are estimated by the Hessian method. Valence-quark distributions are
determined by the F_2 data at large x; however, the small-x part is not obvious
from the data. On the other hand, the antiquark distributions are determined
well at x~0.01 from the F_2 data and at x~0.1 by the Drell-Yan data; however,
the large-x behavior is not clear. Gluon distributions cannot be fixed by the
present data and they have large uncertainties in the whole x region.
Parametrization results are shown in comparison with the data. We provide a
useful code for calculating nuclear PDFs at given x and Q^2.Comment: 9 pages, REVTeX, 23 eps files, Phys. Rev. C in press. Nuclear PDF

Efficient non-degenerate two-photon excitation for fluorescence microscopy
Non-degenerate two-photon excitation (ND-TPE) has been explored in two-photon excitation microscopy. However, a systematic study of the efficiency of ND-TPE to guide the selection of fluorophore excitation wavelengths is missing. We measured the relative non-degenerate two-photon absorption cross-section (ND-TPACS) of several commonly used fluorophores (two fluorescent proteins and three small-molecule dyes) and generated 2-dimensional ND-TPACS spectra. We observed that the shape of a ND-TPACS spectrum follows that of the corresponding degenerate two-photon absorption cross-section (D-TPACS) spectrum, but is higher in magnitude. We found that the observed enhancements are higher than theoretical predictions.Published versio
Fracture toughness of the cancellous bone of FNF femoral heads in relation to its microarchitecture
This study considers the relationship between microarchitecture and mechanical properties for cancellous bone specimens collected from a cohort of patients who had suffered fractured necks of femur. OP
is an acute skeletal condition with huge socioeconomic impact [1] and it is associated with changes in both bone quantity and quality [2], which affect greatly the strength and toughness of the tissue [3].Support was provided by the EPSRC (EP/K020196: Point-ofCare High Accuracy Fracture Risk Prediction), the UK Department of Transport under the BOSCOS (Bone Scanning for Occupant Safety) project, and approved by Gloucester and Cheltenham NHS Trust hospitals under ethical consent (BOSCOS – Mr. Curwen CI REC ref 01/179G)
Toward a descriptive model of solar particles in the heliosphere
During a workshop on the interplanetary charged particle environment held in 1987, a descriptive model of solar particles in the heliosphere was assembled. This model includes the fluence, composition, energy spectra, and spatial and temporal variations of solar particles both within and beyong 1 AU. The ability to predict solar particle fluences was also discussed. Suggestions for specific studies designed to improve the basic model were also made
