    Antimicrobials: a global alliance for optimizing their rational use in intra-abdominal infections (AGORA)

    Get PDF
    Intra-abdominal infections (IAI) are an important cause of morbidity and are frequently associated with poor prognosis, particularly in high-risk patients. The cornerstones in the management of complicated IAIs are timely effective source control with appropriate antimicrobial therapy. Empiric antimicrobial therapy is important in the management of intra-abdominal infections and must be broad enough to cover all likely organisms because inappropriate initial antimicrobial therapy is associated with poor patient outcomes and the development of bacterial resistance. The overuse of antimicrobials is widely accepted as a major driver of some emerging infections (such as C. difficile), the selection of resistant pathogens in individual patients, and for the continued development of antimicrobial resistance globally. The growing emergence of multi-drug resistant organisms and the limited development of new agents available to counteract them have caused an impending crisis with alarming implications, especially with regards to Gram-negative bacteria. An international task force from 79 different countries has joined this project by sharing a document on the rational use of antimicrobials for patients with IAIs. The project has been termed AGORA (Antimicrobials: A Global Alliance for Optimizing their Rational Use in Intra-Abdominal Infections). The authors hope that AGORA, involving many of the world's leading experts, can actively raise awareness in health workers and can improve prescribing behavior in treating IAIs

    Search for Lorentz and CPT violation using sidereal time dependence of neutrino flavor transitions over a short baseline

    Get PDF
    open357A class of extensions of the Standard Model allows Lorentz and CPT violations, which can be identified by the observation of sidereal modulations in the neutrino interaction rate. A search for such modulations was performed using the T2K on-axis near detector. Two complementary methods were used in this study, both of which resulted in no evidence of a signal. Limits on associated Lorentz and CPT-violating terms from the Standard Model extension have been derived by taking into account their correlations in this model for the first time. These results imply such symmetry violations are suppressed by a factor of more than 1020 at the GeV scale.openAbe, K.; Amey, J.; Andreopoulos, C.; Antonova, M.; Aoki, S.; Ariga, A.; Assylbekov, S.; Autiero, D.; Ban, S.; Barbato, F. Complex flavour couplings in supersymmetry and unexpected CP-violation in the decay B -> phi K

    Get PDF
    Complex flavour couplings (off-diagonal mass terms) in the squark sector of supersymmetric theories may drastically alter both the rate and the CP-violating asymmetry of certain B-meson decays. We consider the effects of couplings that induce b -> s transitions and lead to final state with strangeness one. We investigate the bounds that must be satisfied by the new terms and explore the possible implications on direct and mixing induced asymmetries in the charged and neutral B -> J/Psi K and B -> phi K decays.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figure

    KΛ(1405)K\Lambda(1405) configuration of the KKˉNK\bar{K}N system

    We study the KΛ(1405)K\Lambda(1405) configuration of the KKˉNK\bar{K}N system by considering KπΣK\pi\Sigma as a coupled channel. We solve the Faddeev equations for these systems and find confirmation of the existence of a new NN^{*} resonance around 1920 MeV with Jπ=1/2+J^{\pi}=1/2^{+} predicted in a single-channel potential model and also found in a Faddeev calculation as an a0(980)Na_{0}(980)N state, with the a0(980)a_{0}(980) generated in the KKˉK\bar{K}, πη\pi\eta interaction.Comment: Published versio

    Charmonium Decays of $Y(4260), psi(4160), and psi(4040)

    Full text link
    Using data collected with the CLEO detector operating at the CESR e+e- collider at sqrt s = 3.97-4.26 GeV, we investigate 15 charmonium decay modes of the psi(4040), psi(4160), and Y(4260) resonances. We confirm, at 11σ\sigma significance, the BaBar Y(4260) --> pi+ pi- J/psi discovery, make the first observation of Y(4260) --> pi0 pi0 J/psi (5.1 sigma), and find the first evidence for Y(4260) --> K+ K- J/psi (3.7 sigma). We measure e+e- cross-sections at sqrt s = 4.26 GeV as sigma(pi+ pi- J/psi) = 58 +12-10 +- 4 pb, sigma(pi0 pi0 J/psi) = 23 +12 -8 +- 1 pb, and sigma(K+ K- J/psi) = 9 +9 -5 +- 1 pb, in which the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. Upper limits are placed on other decay rates from all three resonances.Comment: 11 pages postscript,also available through http://www.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLNS/2006/, Submitted to PR

    Evidence from d+Au measurements for final-state suppression of high-pT hadrons in Au+Au collisions at RHIC

    Get PDF
    We report measurements of single-particle inclusive spectra and two-particle azimuthal distributions of charged hadrons at high transverse momentum (high pT) in minimum bias and central d+Au collisions at sqrt[sNN]=200 GeV. The inclusive yield is enhanced in d+Au collisions relative to binary-scaled p+p collisions, while the two-particle azimuthal distributions are very similar to those observed in p+p collisions. These results demonstrate that the strong suppression of the inclusive yield and back-to-back correlations at high pT previously observed in central Au+Au collisions are due to final-state interactions with the dense medium generated in such collisions.alle Autoren: J.
