To What Extent Can the Big Five and Learning Styles Predict Academic Achievement

Personality traits and learning styles play defining roles in shaping academic achievement. 202 university students completed the Big Five personality traits questionnaire and the Inventory of Learning Processes Scale and self-reported their grade point averages. Conscientiousness and agreeableness, two of the Big Five personality traits, related positively with all four learning styles, namely synthesis-analysis, methodical study, fact retention and elaborative processing. On the other hand, neuroticism was found to have a negative relationship with all four learning styles. Furthermore, both extraversion and openness appeared to have positive relationships with elaborative processing. The results of the Big Five personality traits explained 17% of the variance in grade point average and learning style added 5% , indicating that both contribute to academic performance. Further, the relationship between openness and GPA was mediated by synthesis-analysis and elaborative processing, both reflective learning styles. These findings suggest that when students process information thoroughly and meticulously and combine such an approach with intellectual curiosity, their academic performance will be enhanced. The impacts of these findings on teaching techniques and curriculum design are also deliberated. Tinto’s Construct of Academic Motivation, Integration and Performance – A Case From Turkey

The indirect effects of seven types of academic motivation on academic performances of 258 first year university students when mediated by academic integration are investigated. When these seven types were examined jointly in the statistical model used , it was found that academic integration mediated only the relationship between the intrinsic motivation to accomplish things and the first year grade point average. This suggests that students who attend university targeting a successful educational life may infer that the university is fostering their cognitive powers and academically they may exhibit a satisfactory performance. On the other hand, when each motivation type was examined individually by itself,  it was found that intrinsic motivation to know was also indirectly related to grade point average, indicating that the students who relish learning are likely to garner the intellectual advantages of the university as well. Görüntü bulanık kümelerde altkümelik ve çok kriterli karar vermeye uygulanması

Picture fuzzy set is a direct generalization of intuitionistic fuzzy set and is therefore more capable of dealing with uncertainty while working on real life problems. The concept of inclusion is a subject that is frequently studied in family of fuzzy sets and has many applications in real life problems. Therefore, in this work, the measuring degree of inclusion between picture fuzzy sets is introduced. For this purpose, firstly axioms for subsethood measure are given and then a subsethood measure based on a distance measure for picture fuzzy sets is proposed. Then, a numerical example is provided to illustrate the applicability and usefulness of the presented measure. Finally, results are compared with the existing methods and aggregation operator to show validity of subsethood measure for PFS.Görüntü bulanık küme, sezgisel bulanık kümenin doğrudan bir genellemesidir ve bu nedenle gerçek hayat problemleri üzerinde çalışırken belirsizlikle başa çıkma konusunda daha yeteneklidir. Kapsama kavramı, bulanık kümeler ailesinde sıklıkla çalışılan ve gerçek hayat problemlerinde birçok uygulaması olan bir konudur. Bu nedenle, bu çalışmada, görüntü bulanık kümeleri arasındaki kapsama derecesinin ölçülmesi tanıtılmıştır. Bu amaçla, önce altkümelik ölçüsü için aksiyomlar verilmiş, ardından görüntü bulanık kümeleri için uzaklık ölçüsüne dayalı bir altküme ölçüsü önerilmiştir. Sonra, verilen ölçünün uygulanabilirliğini ve kullanışlılığını göstermek için sayısal bir örnek verilmiştir. Son olarak, sonuçlar PFS için altkümelik ölçüsünün geçerliliğini göstermek için mevcut yöntemler ve ortalama operatörleri ile karşılaştırılmıştır
