On the exception of Hannah Arendt

This article offers a close reading of Hannah Arendt’s Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil. It argues that in this text, Arendt consistently, even obsessively, evaluates the legal and moral challenges posed by Eichmann’s trial through the relationship between exception and rule. The article contends that the analytical lens of the exception allows us to appreciate the perplexities that Eichmann in Jerusalem presents – some fifty years after the book’s publication – from a still uncommon perspective, and enables us to attend in new ways to Arendt’s own suppositions, propositions, and contradictions in this text

Of rebels and disobedients: reflections on Arendt, race, lawbreaking

Hannah Arendt valued the unprecedented, the unexpected, and the new, yet in essays crafted at the end of the rebellious 1960s, struggled to square this valuation with a palpable desire for law and order. She lamented that criminality had overtaken American life, accused the police of not arresting enough criminals, and charged ‘the Negro community’ with standing behind what she named black violence. At once, she praised ‘the white rebels’ of the student movement in the United States for their courageous acts of disobedience. This essay explores how differential Arendt’s treatment of lawbreaking action was in an effort to understand how ‘certain sections of the population’ in the United States could appear to stand for criminality rather than civil disobedience to her mind. It examines how Arendt’s reflections on the ostensibly non-racial subjects of civil disobedience and lawbreaking were underwritten by racial, when not racist, ways of thinking. The essay also raises a larger question: to the extent that the concept of civil disobedience involves limits, how are those limits drawn to the exclusion of certain kinds of actors and their particular claims in the public realm? Pondering this question through Arendt, it concludes that in her theorization of civil disobedience, Arendt was profoundly limited by the fabulous tale that the United States is an exceptional land of freedom and democracy in the world

Indicators of Quality of Life to Compare Neighborhood Units and Regional Areas: A model to collect data in Turkish cities

Quality of life has been discussed in a wide range of contexts, including city and regional planning. Like other subjective parameters, it is hard to develop objective measures to understand “quality of life” for regions and specific urban settings.  Since there has been voluminous literature on quality of life, researchers focused on various parameters to measure quality of life. This study aims to review the literature on quality of life to extract the indicators of quality of life in urban and regional settings. It would put forward a model to collect data to measure and compare quality of life in neighborhood units and regional areas. The model could be applied in Turkish cities. Exploring the cultural intelligence levels of bilinguals and multilinguals

There have been numerous studies conducted on the importance of multiple intelligence levels of learners and the significance of language learning. By contrast, this study dwells on exploring cultural intelligence, its components and the relationship between cultural intelligence and language learning. To achieve this aim, bilingual and multilingual primary school students were selected and administered a cultural intelligence questionnaire to detect whether or not there is a relationship between these two aspects. The results yield the fact that multilinguals have higher scores in cultural intelligence, showcasing that those who are open to other cultures and can easily adapt to new patterns of thinking are likely to learn languages with ease

Sub-wavelength resolution in a photonic crystal superlens

Cataloged from PDF version of article.Materials that can bend light in the opposite direction to normal (’left-handed’ materials) reverse the way in which refraction usually works-this negative refractive index is due to simultaneously negative permeability and permittivity. Here we demonstrate negative refraction of electromagnetic waves in a two-dimensional dielectric photonic crystal that has a periodically modulated positive permeability and a permeability of unity. This experimental verification of negative refraction is a step towards the realization of a ’superlens’ that will be able to focus features smaller than the wavelength of light. Our structure consists of a square array of alumina rods in air. To obtain the frequency range within which the negative refraction and the other peculiar properties incorporated with it, we have calculated the the equal frequency contours of our photonic crystal with the photonic plane wave expansion method. We found out that 13.7 GHz is the optimum frequency for negative refraction. We took transmission measurements to confirm our structure’s predicted negative refraction: we used the the interfaces of the photonic crystal in the Γ − M direction. Our experiments were simulated with the finite-difference time-domain method (FDTD). The negative index of refraction was determined to be −1.94, which is close to the theoretical value of −2.06 calculated by the FDTD method. Since we know that we have a negative refractive material , we used our crystal to test the superlensing effect that was predicted for negative refractive materials. We have demonstrated that the image of two coherent point sources separated by a distance of λ/3 can be resolved. We have extended our approach to the case with two incoherent point sources, and we have achieved subwavelength resolution for this configuration as well. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of subwavelength resolution of electromagnetic waves in a negative index material.Çubukçu, ErtuğrulM.S
