    51 Pegasi - a planet-bearing Maunder minimum candidate

    We observed 51 Peg, the first detected planet-bearing star, in a 55 ks XMM-Newton pointing and in 5 ks pointings each with Chandra HRC-I and ACIS-S. The star has a very low count rate in the XMM observation, but is clearly visible in the Chandra images due to the detectors' different sensitivity at low X-ray energies. This allows a temperature estimate for 51 Peg's corona of T<1MK; the detected ACIS-S photons can be plausibly explained by emission lines of a very cool plasma near 200eV. The constantly low X-ray surface flux and the flat-activity profile seen in optical CaII data suggest that 51 Peg is a Maunder minimum star; an activity enhancement due to a Hot Jupiter, as proposed by recent studies, seems to be absent. The star's X-ray fluxes in different instruments are consistent with the exception of the HRC Imager, which might have a larger effective area below 200eV than given in the calibration.Comment: accepted by A&

    Solar Carbon Monoxide, Thermal Profiling, and the Abundances of C, O, and their Isotopes

    A solar photospheric "thermal profiling" analysis is presented, exploiting the infrared rovibrational bands of carbon monoxide (CO) as observed with the McMath-Pierce Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) at Kitt Peak, and from above the Earth's atmosphere by the Shuttle-borne ATMOS experiment. Visible continuum intensities and center-limb behavior constrained the temperature profile of the deep photosphere, while CO center-limb behavior defined the thermal structure at higher altitudes. The oxygen abundance was self consistently determined from weak CO absorptions. Our analysis was meant to complement recent studies based on 3-D convection models which, among other things, have revised the historical solar oxygen (and carbon) abundance downward by a factor of nearly two; although in fact our conclusions do not support such a revision. Based on various considerations, an oxygen abundance of 700+/-100 ppm (parts per million relative to hydrogen) is recommended; the large uncertainty reflects the model sensitivity of CO.     A far-UV survey of three hot, metal-polluted white dwarf stars: WD0455-282, WD0621-376, and WD2211-495

    Using newly obtained high-resolution data (R∌1×105R\sim{1\times{10}^{5}}) from the \textit{Hubble Space Telescope}, and archival UV data from the \textit{Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer} we have conducted a detailed UV survey of the three hot, metal-polluted white dwarfs WD0455-282, WD0621-376, and WD2211-495. Using bespoke model atmospheres we measured TeffT_{\mathrm{eff}}, log gg, and photospheric abundances for these stars. In conjunction with data from Gaia we measured masses, radii, and gravitational redshift velocities for our sample of objects. We compared the measured photospheric abundances with those predicted by radiative levitation theory, and found that the observed Si abundances in all three white dwarfs, and the observed Fe abundances in WD0621-376 and WD2211-495, were larger than those predicted by an order of magnitude. These findings imply not only an external origin for the metals, but also ongoing accretion, as the metals not supported by radiative levitation would sink on extremely short timescales. We measured the radial velocities of several absorption features along the line of sight to the three objects in our sample, allowing us to determine the velocities of the photospheric and interstellar components along the line of sight for each star. Interestingly, we made detections of circumstellar absorption along the line of sight to WD0455-282 with three velocity components. To our knowledge, this is the first such detection of multi-component circumstellar absorption along the line of sight to a white dwarf.Comment: 19 pages, 23 figures, 8 tables.     A critical test of empirical mass loss formulae applied to individual giants and supergiants

    To test our new, improved Reimers-type mass-loss relation, given by Schroder & Cuntz in 2005 (ApJL 630, L73), we take a look at the best studied galactic giants and supergiants - particularly those with spatially resolved circumstellar shells and winds, obtained directly or by means of a companion acting as a probing light source. Together with well-known physical parameters, the selected stars provide the most powerful and critical observational venues for assessing the validity of parameterized mass-loss relations for cool winds not driven by molecules or dust. In this study, star by star, we compare our previously published relation with the original Reimers relation (1975), the Lamers relation (1981), and the two relations by de Jager and his group (1988, 1990). The input data, especially the stellar masses, have been constrained using detailed stellar evolution models. We find that only the relationship by Schroder & Cuntz agrees, within the error bars, with the observed mass-loss rates for all giants and supergiants.Comment: 11 pages, 5 Figs. accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysic

    Relationship between X-ray and ultraviolet emission of flares from dMe stars observed by XMM-Newton

    We present simultaneous ultraviolet and X-ray observations of the dMe-type flaring stars AT Mic, AU Mic, EV Lac, UV Cet and YZ CMi obtained with the XMM-Newton observatory. During 40 hours of simultaneous observation we identify 13 flares which occurred in both wave bands. For the first time, a correlation between X-ray and ultraviolet flux for stellar flares has been observed. We find power-law relationships between these two wavelength bands for the flare luminosity increase, as well as for flare energies, with power-law exponents between 1 and 2. We also observe a correlation between the ultraviolet flare energy and the X-ray luminosity increase, which is in agreement with the Neupert effect and demonstrates that chromospheric evaporation is taking place.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables, accepted by A&A (30 Sept. 2004

    Comparative analysis between condom use clusters and risk behaviours among portuguese university students

    The research on condom use has been focused on high-risk individuals, paying less attention to those who have moderate risk or safe sexual conducts. In order to design accurate interventions, potential differences among the condom use behavior groups must be considered. The goal was to assess possible differences in individuals presenting different types of risk behavior. 140 heterosexual university students answered a self-reported questionnaire about their sexual history, condom use habits, sexual self-esteem, sexual satisfaction, sexual control, attitudes towards condoms, self-efficacy to condom use, and emotions and feelings during sexual intercourse. A cluster analysis was conducted using the results about condom use and risk behaviors. Three groups with different risk levels emerged, presenting differences over sexual self-efficacy, attitudes towards condoms, socio-demographic variables, and sexual history. The results suggest the condom use inconsistency is highly associated with other risk behaviors but the contrary does not necessarily happens. Condom use consistent users also presented risk behaviors as smoking and drinking. The group differences suggest the risks were more affected by the combination of lack of skills with a negative attitude toward condoms than by contextual or personal variables. These differences sustain the need of an intervention adjusted to the individual's risk levels, since they differ on skills and beliefs that may hinder or promote the adoption of health behaviors.Foundation for Science and Technology/Fundacao para a Ciencia e Tecnologia (Portugal)info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Future Precision Neutrino Oscillation Experiments and Theoretical Implications

    Future neutrino oscillation experiments will lead to precision measurements of neutrino mass splittings and mixings. The flavour structure of the lepton sector will therefore at some point become better known than that of the quark sector. This article discusses the potential of future oscillation experiments on the basis of detailed simulations with an emphasis on experiments which can be done in about ten years.     Charge density waves and Fermi surface reconstruction in the clean overdoped cuprate superconductor Tl2Ba2CuO6+ÎŽ.

    Hall effect and quantum oscillation measurements on high temperature cuprate superconductors show that underdoped compositions have small Fermi surface pockets whereas when heavily overdoped, a single much larger pocket is found. The origin of this change in electronic structure has been unclear, but may be related to the high temperature superconductivity. Here we show that the clean overdoped single-layer cuprate Tl2Ba2CuO6+ÎŽ (Tl2201) displays CDW order with a remarkably long correlation length Ο ≈ 200 Å which disappears above a hole doping of pCDW ≈ 0.265. We show that the evolution of the electronic properties of Tl2201 as the doping is lowered may be explained by a Fermi surface reconstruction which accompanies the emergence of the CDW below pCDW. Our results demonstrate importance of CDW correlations in understanding the electronic properties of overdoped cuprates
