Surface radiation budget for climate applications
The Surface Radiation Budget (SRB) consists of the upwelling and downwelling radiation fluxes at the surface, separately determined for the broadband shortwave (SW) (0 to 5 micron) and longwave (LW) (greater than 5 microns) spectral regions plus certain key parameters that control these fluxes, specifically, SW albedo, LW emissivity, and surface temperature. The uses and requirements for SRB data, critical assessment of current capabilities for producing these data, and directions for future research are presented

Mycoviruses
A virus (from the Latin word ‘v?rus’ meaning ‘venom’ or ‘poison’) is a microorganism invisible to the naked eye. Viruses can multiply exclusively by entering a cell and using the cell’s resources to create copies of themselves. As the origin of their name suggests, viruses are generally considered dangerous, harmful and often deadly. Some of the most well-studied and widely known viruses, such as HIV and influenza, infect humans. However, viruses can also infect animals, plants and microorganisms, including fungi. Many fungi are medically, ecologically and economically significant, for example, causing diseases to humans, plants and insects or being used in industry to produce bread, cheese, beer and wine. Viruses that infect fungi are called mycoviruses (from the Greek work ‘myco’, meaning ‘fungus’). Mycoviruses do not cause harm to or kill the infected fungus; in contrast, they are ‘friendly’ viruses and we can utilize them to control the growth, pathogenicity and toxin production of fungi. In-Vehicle information systems-related multiple task performance and driver
Doutoramento em Motricidade Humana, Especialidade em ErgonomiaThe presence of new technologies inside vehicles is becoming more common. Due to this
fact, the potential changes produced on the driving task and also on the road safety must be
examined. With the intention of contributing to amplify this knowledge, the present research
aimed to study the impact of multiple visual and auditory inputs from in-vehicle information systems on the driver behaviour. It was investigated the interaction with more than one invehicle system (a guidance system and a mobile phone device) and verified its consequences on the drivers’ activity. To accomplish this goal two experimental moments were planned:
one conducted in a real context and another in a simulated environment. Results revealed that the interaction with two in-vehicle systems produced considerable changes on drivers’behaviour once subjects assumed more frequently unsafe actions like: inadequate indication of their actions; abrupt and unexpected adoption of determined behaviours; and also negligence of some road information from the environment. It was also verified that this situation produced more severe consequences to the driving task performance of elderly drivers. The management of all sources of information induced them to compromise their safety and be more frequently involved in dangerous situations.O surgimento das novas tecnologias embarcadas e a sua contínua evolução têm alterado o
contexto rodoviário. Como consequência, a cada vez maior aceitação e utilização deste tipo de
equipamentos tem sido motivo de estudo, uma vez que é essencial conhecer as potenciais
alterações produzidas na tarefa de condução e na segurança rodoviária. Com o intuito de
contribuir para ampliar o conhecimento relativo a este tema, a presente investigação pretendeu
estudar o impacto que múltiplas mensagens visuais e auditivas provenientes de sistemas
embarcados possam ter no comportamento do condutor. Foi investigada a interacção com mais
que um sistema embarcado (sistema de navegação e telemóvel) e verificadas as consequências
na actividade dos condutores. Para cumprir este objectivo, dois momentos experimentais
foram desenvolvidos: um em ambiente real e outro em envolvimento simulado. Os resultados
revelaram que a interacção com os dois sistemas embarcados produziram alterações
consideráveis no comportamento dos condutores uma vez que estes adoptaram mais
frequentemente actos inseguros como: indicação inadequada das suas acções; comportamentos
bruscos e inesperados; bem como negligência de determinada informação proveniente do
envolvimento rodoviário. Foi igualmente verificado que esta situação produziu consequências
mais gravosas no desempenho dos condutores idosos. A gestão de todas as fontes de
informação impeliu este grupo de condutores a comprometer a sua segurança e a estar mais
frequentemente envolvidos em situações perigosas
Earth imaging with microsatellites: An investigation, design, implementation and in-orbit demonstration of electronic imaging systems for earth observation on-board low-cost microsatellites.
This research programme has studied the possibilities and difficulties of using 50 kg microsatellites to perform remote imaging of the Earth. The design constraints of these missions are quite different to those encountered in larger, conventional spacecraft. While the main attractions of microsatellites are low cost and fast response times, they present the following key limitations: Payload mass under 5 kg, Continuous payload power under 5 Watts, peak power up to 15 Watts, Narrow communications bandwidths (9.6 / 38.4 kbps), Attitude control to within 5°, No moving mechanics. The most significant factor is the limited attitude stability. Without sub-degree attitude control, conventional scanning imaging systems cannot preserve scene geometry, and are therefore poorly suited to current microsatellite capabilities. The foremost conclusion of this thesis is that electronic cameras, which capture entire scenes in a single operation, must be used to overcome the effects of the satellite's motion. The potential applications of electronic cameras, including microsatellite remote sensing, have erupted with the recent availability of high sensitivity field-array CCD (charge-coupled device) image sensors. The research programme has established suitable techniques and architectures necessary for CCD sensors, cameras and entire imaging systems to fulfil scientific/commercial remote sensing despite the difficult conditions on microsatellites. The author has refined these theories by designing, building and exploiting in-orbit five generations of electronic cameras. The major objective of meteorological scale imaging was conclusively demonstrated by the Earth imaging camera flown on the UoSAT-5 spacecraft in 1991. Improved cameras have since been carried by the KITSAT-1 (1992) and PoSAT-1 (1993) microsatellites. PoSAT-1 also flies a medium resolution camera (200 metres) which (despite complete success) has highlighted certain limitations of microsatellites for high resolution remote sensing. A reworked, and extensively modularised, design has been developed for the four camera systems deployed on the FASat-Alfa mission (1995). Based on the success of these missions, this thesis presents many recommendations for the design of microsatellite imaging systems. The novelty of this research programme has been the principle of designing practical camera systems to fit on an existing, highly restrictive, satellite platform, rather than conceiving a fictitious small satellite to support a high performance scanning imager. This pragmatic approach has resulted in the first incontestable demonstrations of the feasibility of remote sensing of the Earth from inexpensive microsatellites

Modelling, evaluation and demonstration of novel active voltage control schemes to accomodate distributed generation in distribution networks
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.Voltage control in distribution networks is becoming more challenging due to the growing amount of distributed generation that is being connected to the distribution networks in addition to increasing load. The output of the distributed generation can radically change power flows and voltage profiles in distribution networks, creating conditions that adversely affect the performance of automatic voltage control schemes and in addition cause unacceptable voltage rise. On the other hand, inherent limitations and current operational policies of AVC schemes very often restrict the output of DG or even prevent its connection. This thesis investigates and analyses voltage control in terms of the shift from passive to active distribution networks. The thesis also reviews the performance of AVC schemes under varying load and generation output conditions, investigates effective utilisation of distribution network assets and methods to accommodate active voltage control schemes into existing infrastructure. A range of active voltage control and management schemes based on coordinated voltage control is presented and assessed. These schemes can be used to improve the voltage profile in distribution networks and increase their ability to accommodate distributed generation. The functionality of each scheme is assessed based on a number of factors such as the ability of the scheme to increase network capacity, reliability and accuracy. Simulation software to accurately evaluate the performance of an active voltage control scheme in a particular distribution network scenario is essential before the scheme can be deployed. Formal assessment of advanced AVC models and SuperTAPP n+ functionality is performed using simulation software as developed and presented in this thesis. The accuracy of the software results and performance of the SuperTAPP n+ scheme is validated based on network trials carried out in EDF Energy Networks.This work is funded by the Engineering and

Estudo da remodelagem reversa miocárdica através da análise proteómica do miocárdio e do líquido pericárdico
Valve replacement remains as the standard therapeutic option for aortic
stenosis patients, aiming at abolishing pressure overload and triggering
myocardial reverse remodeling. However, despite the instant hemodynamic
benefit, not all patients show complete regression of myocardial hypertrophy,
being at higher risk for adverse outcomes, such as heart failure. The current
comprehension of the biological mechanisms underlying an incomplete reverse
remodeling is far from complete. Furthermore, definitive prognostic tools and
ancillary therapies to improve the outcome of the patients undergoing valve
replacement are missing. To help abridge these gaps, a combined myocardial
(phospho)proteomics and pericardial fluid proteomics approach was followed,
taking advantage of human biopsies and pericardial fluid collected during
surgery and whose origin anticipated a wealth of molecular information
contained therein.
From over 1800 and 750 proteins identified, respectively, in the myocardium
and in the pericardial fluid of aortic stenosis patients, a total of 90 dysregulated
proteins were detected. Gene annotation and pathway enrichment analyses,
together with discriminant analysis, are compatible with a scenario of increased
pro-hypertrophic gene expression and protein synthesis, defective ubiquitinproteasome system activity, proclivity to cell death (potentially fed by
complement activity and other extrinsic factors, such as death receptor
activators), acute-phase response, immune system activation and fibrosis.
Specific validation of some targets through immunoblot techniques and
correlation with clinical data pointed to complement C3 β chain, Muscle Ring
Finger protein 1 (MuRF1) and the dual-specificity Tyr-phosphorylation
regulated kinase 1A (DYRK1A) as potential markers of an incomplete
response. In addition, kinase prediction from phosphoproteome data suggests
that the modulation of casein kinase 2, the family of IκB kinases, glycogen
synthase kinase 3 and DYRK1A may help improve the outcome of patients
undergoing valve replacement. Particularly, functional studies with DYRK1A+/-
cardiomyocytes show that this kinase may be an important target to treat
cardiac dysfunction, provided that mutant cells presented a different response
to stretch and reduced ability to develop force (active tension).
This study opens many avenues in post-aortic valve replacement reverse
remodeling research. In the future, gain-of-function and/or loss-of-function
studies with isolated cardiomyocytes or with animal models of aortic bandingdebanding will help disclose the efficacy of targeting the surrogate therapeutic
targets. Besides, clinical studies in larger cohorts will bring definitive proof of
complement C3, MuRF1 and DYRK1A prognostic value.A substituição da válvula aórtica continua a ser a opção terapêutica de
referência para doentes com estenose aórtica e visa a eliminação da
sobrecarga de pressão, desencadeando a remodelagem reversa miocárdica.
Contudo, apesar do benefício hemodinâmico imediato, nem todos os pacientes
apresentam regressão completa da hipertrofia do miocárdio, ficando com maior
risco de eventos adversos, como a insuficiência cardíaca. Atualmente, os
mecanismos biológicos subjacentes a uma remodelagem reversa incompleta
ainda não são claros. Além disso, não dispomos de ferramentas de
prognóstico definitivos nem de terapias auxiliares para melhorar a condição
dos pacientes indicados para substituição da válvula. Para ajudar a resolver
estas lacunas, uma abordagem combinada de (fosfo)proteómica e proteómica
para a caracterização, respetivamente, do miocárdio e do líquido pericárdico
foi seguida, tomando partido de biópsias e líquidos pericárdicos recolhidos em
ambiente cirúrgico.
Das mais de 1800 e 750 proteínas identificadas, respetivamente, no miocárdio
e no líquido pericárdico dos pacientes com estenose aórtica, um total de 90
proteínas desreguladas foram detetadas. As análises de anotação de genes,
de enriquecimento de vias celulares e discriminativa corroboram um cenário de
aumento da expressão de genes pro-hipertróficos e de síntese proteica, um
sistema ubiquitina-proteassoma ineficiente, uma tendência para morte celular
(potencialmente acelerada pela atividade do complemento e por outros fatores
extrínsecos que ativam death receptors), com ativação da resposta de fase
aguda e do sistema imune, assim como da fibrose.
A validação de alguns alvos específicos através de immunoblot e correlação
com dados clínicos apontou para a cadeia β do complemento C3, a Muscle
Ring Finger protein 1 (MuRF1) e a dual-specificity Tyr-phosphoylation
regulated kinase 1A (DYRK1A) como potenciais marcadores de uma resposta
incompleta. Por outro lado, a predição de cinases a partir do fosfoproteoma,
sugere que a modulação da caseína cinase 2, a família de cinases do IκB, a
glicogénio sintase cinase 3 e da DYRK1A pode ajudar a melhorar a condição
dos pacientes indicados para intervenção. Em particular, a avaliação funcional
de cardiomiócitos DYRK1A+/- mostraram que esta cinase pode ser um alvo
importante para tratar a disfunção cardíaca, uma vez que os miócitos mutantes
responderam de forma diferente ao estiramento e mostraram uma menor
capacidade para desenvolver força (tensão ativa).
Este estudo levanta várias hipóteses na investigação da remodelagem reversa.
No futuro, estudos de ganho e/ou perda de função realizados em
cardiomiócitos isolados ou em modelos animais de banding-debanding da
aorta ajudarão a testar a eficácia de modular os potenciais alvos terapêuticos
encontrados. Além disso, estudos clínicos em coortes de maior dimensão
trarão conclusões definitivas quanto ao valor de prognóstico do complemento
